Book excerpt: This book highlighted about the glimpses of odishas identity from the period 1900-1956 and the role notable personalities who changed society in politically, socially, economically and educationally. The modern architectures of odisha bring a change with the context of a creative evolution of new social order which within the Indian context, meant nurturing communal unity, abolishing untouchbility, fostering adult education and systematic improvement of village. It meant uplifting the peasant and developing non-violent labour unions, working towards economic and social equality, promoting cottage and small-scale industries as a means for decentralizing economic production and distribution and eradicating a wide variety of social evils. The welfare programme for regenerating village communities depended on voluntary service and it functioned independently of the state and other institutions. Keeping pointing welfare programmes and set up a number of social welfare work organizations to work it out in order to knit together in a common bond of fellowship the millions and work pattern of nonviolent conduct into their lives. The main motives behind this was Communal harmony, Stand against untouchability, Prohibition, Khadi and Gramodyog (Village Industries), Village Cleanliness drives, Nai Talim, Adult Education, Inclusion of Womenfolk into the mainstream, Health & hygiene, Development of vernacular language, Stress on National language, Stress on Economic Equality, Political awakening of the peasants, Establishment of ideal labour unions, Service to the lepers, Service to Adivasis, Prohibition of toddy, Ban on illicit liquor and etc. Modern archtitutere of odisha played an important under the leadership Gandhiji. It was primarily organized around the promotion of Khadi spinning and village industries, national education and Hindu-Muslim unity, struggle against untouchability and social uplift of the Harijans and boycott of foreign cloth and liquor. Above all, it meant going to villages and identifying with villagers. Constructive work was symplized by hundreds of ashrams which came up all over the country, almost entirely in the villages and in which social and political workers got practical training in production of Khadi and yarn and in work among lower castes and tribal people.

Book excerpt: Naveen means ‘new, Role Model of World’. Yes, he was new when he steps into politics in a tragic circumstance at the age of 51 then. Following the passing of his legendary father Biju Patnaik a former CM of Odisha. He took unplanned entry into politics in 1997 but had nothing apart from a strong surname. He had never contested an election or held public office. Studied at Welham, Lawrence and then Doon School, later he attended the prestigious Kirori Mal College, Delhi. Brought up outside the state, doesn’t speak Odiya. He authored four coffee table books and even acted in a Hollywood movie ‘The Deceivers’. Socialite with celebrities as Mick Jagger and Jacqueline Kennedy. Leaving everything behind, when Naveen entered into politics, everyone saw a magnet for attracting voter’s sympathy. Many leaders even thought that they could easily use as ladder to fulfill their political aspirations. He is suave, decent and soft-spoken. Political Pundits predicted, it’s very difficult to survive here. But the BJD Supremo has proven all the predictions wrong. He surpassed the record held by Jyoti Basu, who was the CM of West Bengal for 23 years and 138 days, thereby becoming India’s second longest-serving CM ever. Only Sikkim’s Pawan Chamling is ahead. Who had ruled the hill state for 24 years and 166 days. Shattering that record too looks eminently possible soon, from then till today he has not lost a single election. Meanwhile, there was many political and natural storms. But no one could touch his political Fort. Even the Narendra Modi’s wave didn’t make any dent. Naveen’s ‘Chanakya Neeti’, developing and administrative disciplines not only made him a humongous leader, but also transform a backward state into fastest growing state of the country, set global benchmarks. Recognize not only himself but also his state as a role model in the world. It really doesn’t matter that he doesn’t speak Odiya well…!

Factionalism, a growing phenomenon in Indian government and politics, has not only of late, assumed new dimensions but also infected almost all organizations including political parties, interest group, pressure groups, trade unions, voluntary association etc. It is quite disheartening and distressing to observe that even village community and its government and politics are largely as well as deeply affected and afflicted by this all-pervading evil that has spread its tentacles to eat away the very vitals of the Indian rural society. It has assumed so much of importance and significance that it has attracted the attention of social scientists, policy-makers and administrators.

In the case of Bhubaneswar, however, this has been enough for its evolution from a sleepy and thinly-populated but neatly laid out state capital to a modern and bustling city that is now a centre of commerce, education, and sports. In our Cover Story, we trace the early years of Bhubaneswar's existence, its anointment as state capital, and the subsequent decades that have shaped the city into what it is today. Dreams have a way of coming true if one perseveres and works hard. City Biz brings you the story of two women who came together with a shared passion to preserve and promote the dying art of Odisha's handloom through their brand, Hatbunai. City Biz also features Charkha, a homegrown fashion label that is traditional and modern at the same time. The City Lights section brings you snapshots from the global trade show, Resurgent Odisha 2024, and the launch of a coffee table book on Bhubaneswar. Trying to achieve meaning and joy in life is often an unending quest in a fast-paced world. A book on Ikigai, the Japanese expression for a passion that gives value and joy to life, tries to help readers rediscover the purpose of living. Read more about it in City Literature. With September 8 being celebrated as World Physiotherapy Day, City Health takes a closer look at this modern medical science and the remedies it can offer. Our CityZen for this edition is a person who is fondly referred to as the “Radio Man” and it is not too difficult to understand why once you visit his small shop tucked away in the bylanes of Cuttack. Afzal bhai, who has dealt with audio products for over 40 years, talks about his repair business, the challenges he faces, and what keeps him going. In ScreenShots, we catch up with three talented Odia artistes who were associated with one of the biggest box office blockbusters that Bollywood has produced - Stree 2. Associate Editor Madhubrata Mohanty, foley artist Varun Visoi, and focus puller Saroj Kumar Sahoo give a peek into what went on behind the scenes during the film's making. They also open up about their experience in the film industry. Meanwhile, movie buffs who are unsure about what to watch next on streaming platforms can turn to Cityflix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with kingship in Orissa. However, it is concerned neither with the great kingdoms of central Orissa, nor with the little kingdoms lying on the coast or in the fertile river valleys of Orissa, but with jungle kingdoms lying in the remote hinterland of south Orissa. The discussion is based on material collected by the author during extensive fieldwork and archival research in Orissa during the 1990s. Presenting and interpreting his ethnohistorical data, the author also addresses several issues of more general importance: the nature of kingship and the state in colonial and post-colonial India; the politics of ritual and the rituals of politics; the relation between kings and tribes, the Hinduization of tribal deities; the complementarity of tribal and royal principles of action and organization; or the uses of historical reconstructions as legitimating strategies. It is argued that these and other topics can be shown in new light, not although but because a political unit is the focus of research which hitherto has experienced hardly any scholarly attention: the jungle kingdom.
