Bahasa tersebut dituturkan oleh suku Jawa yang mendiami sebagian besar Pulau Jawa, yaitu Provinsi Jawa Tengah, Provinsi Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY), dan Provinsi Jawa Timur. Oleh karena itu, tak aneh jika Bernard Comrie (via Montolalu dkk, 2007: 186), salah seorang ahli linguistik terkemuka, menyampaikan, bahasa Jawa memiliki jumlah penutur sebanyak 65 juta orang, dan termasuk ke dalam 20 bahasa ibu yang jumlah penuturnya terbanyak di seluruh dunia. Terkait itu, banyaknya jumlah penutur bahasa Jawa di Indonesia, ternyata berdampak pula pada banyaknya kosakata bahasa Indonesia dari bahasa Jawa, khususnya yang tercantum di dalam Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia Pusat Bahasa Edisi Keempat (2008). Di dalam kamus kebanggaan bangsa Indonesia itu, tercatat 1.049 buah kosakata bahasa Jawa, yang akan diuraikan dalam bagian “Daftar Kosakata Bahasa Jawa dalam Bahasa Indonesia A-Z”. Dengan demikian, bahasa Jawa (dan bahasa-bahasa daerah lainnya di Indonesia) sebagai pemerkaya bahasa Indonesia (Soeparno, dkk, 1997: 4). Selain kosakata, di dalam kamus terbitan Pusat Bahasa (kini Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa, Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia) itu tercatat pula 39 buah ungkapan bahasa Jawa, salah satunya ialah ing ngarsa sung tuladha, ing madya mangun karsa, tut wuri handayani, artinya ‘(berada) di depan memberi contoh sehingga dapat diteladani, di tengah memberi dorongan semangat, dan mengikuti dari belakang dengan memberi kekuatan dalam usaha melaksanakan tugas’.
