Book excerpt: The Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) was established in November 2017, as a new process to advance discussions on issues related to agriculture under the two Subsidiary Bodies (SBs) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC): the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI). The decision recognizes the fundamental importance of agriculture in responding to climate change, and calls for joint work between the SBs on specific elements, including through workshops and expert meetings. This analysis aims to summarize the views submitted on KJWA topic 2(a): Modalities for implementation of the outcomes of the five insession workshops on issues related to agriculture and other future topics that may arise from the joint work on agriculture. The summary intends to make the wide range of views submitted more easily accessible to those interested – including Parties and observers to the UNFCCC, but also FAO staff working on climate change as well the public. The analysis takes into consideration the 17 submissions by Parties and the 14 by observers on topic 2(a) of the KJWA, submitted on KJWA topic 2(a) by 10 December 2018.

Book excerpt: The Koronivia joint work (KJWA) on agriculture is a decision that was reached at the UN climate conference (COP23) in November 2018, officially acknowledging the significance of the agriculture sectors in adapting to and mitigating climate change. The paragraph 2 of the KJWA decision provides a list of initial elements on which Parties were invited to submit their views. Recognizing that KJWA does not mandate the UNFCCC secretariat to produce a synthesis of submissions made, a number of Parties attending the Dialogue suggested that FAO might provide a factual summary of the submissions. The analysis takes into consideration the 21 KJWA submissions made by Parties and 27 by observers and published by 20th of May 2018 on the UNFCCC submission portal, as well as the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) and Least Developed Countries (LDC) group submissions.

Book excerpt: This study highlights the links between agroecology and climate change, by providing evidence on the technical (i.e. ecological and socio-economic) and policy potential of agroecology to build resilient food systems. The report aims to answer the following question: - How can agroecology foster climate change adaptation, mitigation and resilience through practices and policies? Inspired by the idea that transformation will only happen through a coordinated approach among all levels, this study aims to combine evidence from a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives.

Book excerpt: Livestock food systems need to be rapidly rethought to tackle the global climate crisis. This book examines how climate concerns for the livestock sector are governed in international law and addresses the sector's inclusion (or lack thereof) across the international governance of climate change, agriculture, forests and trade. The book provides a wide-ranging analysis of legal regimes at the international level that affect emissions from cattle (and where relevant, livestock more broadly). On this basis, tensions, interactions, and common themes for livestock emissions mitigation across the international climate change, forestry, agricultural and agri-trade regime are identified. This showcases where productive synergies and damaging tensions have emerged across the cross-cutting nature of livestock governance, enabling goals of fairer and more effective emissions mitigation for the sector to be achieved. In addition to addressing issues such as food security and public health, the book highlights the problem of affluence in reducing cattle emissions from meat consumption. This key insight is significant in terms of tackling future livestock emissions trajectories, particularly in relation to securing climate justice within the agricultural sector and securing equitable and effective livestock solutions. The book is a key text for all those with an interest in the legal governance of climate change and agriculture, adding to the timely debate on the future sustainability of the global diet and the relationship between affluence and climate change.

Book excerpt: This publication serves as a guide for countries in exploring how reporting for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators under FAO custodianship serves the scope of compiling information for the biennial transparency reports (BRT) under the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF). The paper intends to demonstrate the potential integration of adaptation reporting with SDG and Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) global measurable targets and corresponding indicators to advance towards a common understanding of how to track adaptation while informing progress towards the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA). It is aimed primarily at technical authorities and experts working on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of adaptation in the agriculture sectors and compiling information to report on adaptation at national and international levels. Secondly, it is aimed at policy- and decision-makers that can use M&E evidence to inform adaptation planning, both in the agriculture sectors specifically and as part of broader national adaptation planning, implementation, and budgeting processes.

Book excerpt: Short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), including methane, black carbon, hydrofluorocarbons, and tropospheric ozone, have become part of climate policy debates. Discussion has revolved around the potential of their mitigation to slow down global warming in the short term and bring about co-benefits, for instance, for air quality and public health. This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of global SLCP law and governance. A diverse array of contributors delves into the science and evolution of the concept of SLCPs, analyses the legal and governance responses developed under various international and transnational arenas, and discusses selected sectoral case studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume examines the complex entanglements of human, animal, and environmental health. It assembles leading scholars from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and medicine to explore existing One Health approaches and to envision a mode of health that is both more-than-human and also more sensitive to, and explicit about, colonial and neocolonial legacies—urging the decolonization of One Health. While acknowledging the importance of One Health, the volume at the same time critically examines its roots, highlighting the structural biases and power dynamics still at play in this global health regime. The volume is distinctive in its geographic breadth. It travels from Inuit sled dogs in the Arctic to rock hyraxes in Jerusalem, from black-faced spoonbills in Taiwan to street dogs in India, from spittle-bugs on Mallorca’s almond trees to jellyfish management at sea, and from rabies in sub-Saharan Africa to massive culling practices in South Korea. Together, the contributors call for One Health to move toward a more transparent, plural, and just perception of health that takes seriously the role of more-than-humans and of nonscientific knowledges, pointing to ways in which One Health can—and should—be decolonized. This volume will appeal to researchers and practitioners in the medical humanities, posthumanities, environmental humanities, science and technology studies, animal studies, multispecies ethnography, anthrozoology, and critical public health.
