Book excerpt: The low mound of Korakou is conspicuously sited on the low plateau which extends westward from the Isthmus of Corinth. This volume reports on the results of numerous trial pits sunk by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1915 and 1916, and the clearing of the revealed buildings. The site appears to have been occupied throughout the Bronze Age, with some burnt layers suggesting that this occupation was not continuous, and the excavation was an influential one in establishing the "Helladic" system of referring to prehistoric remains on mainland Greece.

The clay, usually reddish, is somewhat coarse and contains numerous gritty particles, while the baking is far from perfect. The surface of the vase is bufi, red, or black, or some shade varying between red and black, and is very smoothly polished. Marks of the burnishing instrument are distinctly visible. The material is very fragmentary and no whole vases were found. Shapes that could be recog nized are shallow, round bowls or saucers; deep, wide jars; and askoid pots. No vessel with a raised base was found. In some cases the bottom of the vase was merely flattened out; in others after the bottom was flattened its centre was pushed upward a little, forming thereby a slight hol low under the pot. Book excerpt: The finds in the Athenian Agora from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages have added important chronological context to the earliest eras of Athenian history. The bulk of the items are pottery, but stone, bone, and metal objects also occur. Selected material from the Neolithic and from the Early and Middle Helladic periods is catalogued by fabric and then shape and forms the basis of detailed discussions of the wares (by technique, shapes, and decoration), the stone and bone objects, and their relative and absolute chronology. The major part of the volume is devoted to the Mycenaean period, the bulk of it to the cemetery of forty-odd tombs and graves with detailed discussions of architectural forms; of funeral rites; of offerings of pottery, bronze, ivory, and jewelry; and of chronology. Pottery from wells, roads, and other deposits as well as individual vases without significant context, augment the pottery from tombs as the basis of a detailed analysis of Mycenaean pottery. A chapter on historical conclusions deals with all areas of Mycenaean Athens.
