Als Quelle lag Konrad eine Fassung des »Liber de natura rerum« des Thomas von Cantimpré vor, die er unter Setzung eigener Akzente ins Deutsche übertrug, bearbeitete und um zahlreiche Auslegungen der proprietates rerum erweiterte. Das »Buch der Natur« zeigt so das geistige Profil eines bereits die Autoritäten hinterfragenden, zugleich um das geistliche Wohl seiner Leser besorgten Autors, dem es noch einmal gelingt, das umfangreiche naturkundliche Wissen seiner Zeit in ein Buch zu integrieren. Schon kurze Zeit nach der ursprünglichen, durch den Autor verantworteten Fassung A des »Buch der Natur« erschien eine ebenfalls wirkungsmächtige gekürzte Fassung B, die von einem Anonymus stammt. Die hier erstmals vorgelegte kritische Edition der A-Fassung des »Buch der Natur« beruht auf dem Leithandschriftenprinzip und ersetzt die verdienstvolle Ausgabe Pfeiffers. Der Editionsplan sieht vor, zunächst den Textband vorzulegen. Dieser wird zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt die Einleitung folgen (Band I), welche neben einer Einführung zum Autor eine ausführliche Beschreibung der Überlieferungsträger und der Textgeschichte bietet. Abgerundet wird das editorische Projekt durch den von Dagmar Gottschall verfaßten Kommentar (Band III) und das von Heidemarie Vogl bearbeitetete Wörterbuch (Band IV) zum »Buch der Natur«.

Book excerpt: Older research on the premodern world limited its focus on the Church, the court, and, more recently, on urban space. The present volume invites readers to consider the meaning of rural space, both in light of ecocritical readings and social-historical approaches. While previous scholars examined the figure of the peasant in the premodern world, the current volume combines a large number of specialized studies that investigate how the natural environment and the appearance of members of the rural population interacted with the world of the court and of the city. The experience in rural space was important already for writers and artists in the premodern era, as the large variety of scholarly approaches indicates. The present volume signals how much the surprisingly close interaction between members of the aristocratic and of the peasant class determined many literary and art-historical works. In a surprisingly large number of cases we can even discover elements of utopia hidden in rural space. We also observe how much the rural world was a significant element already in early-medieval mentality. Moreover, as many authors point out, the impact of natural forces on premodern society was tremendous, if not catastrophic.

Jahrhunderts, der "Liber de natura rerum" des Thomas von Cantimbré, in einer redigierten Fassung zugrundeliegt, schuf der Regensburger Domherr Konrad von Megenberg (1309-1374) das erste deutschsprachige Kompendium, das einem illitteraten Rezipientenkreis das Wissen über die geschaffene Natur in systematischer Ordnung erschloß. Es wurde zu einem der meistgelesenen und wirkungsmächtigsten Bücher des späten Mittelalters in deutscher Sprache. Die vorliegende Studie, die methodisch der überlieferungsgeschichtlichen Forschungsrichtung verpflichtet ist, charakterisiert die verschiedenen Textfassungen, diskutiert mögliche Autorintentionen, beschreibt und analysiert die reiche handschriftliche und drucktechnische Überlieferung (80 Handschriften und Fragmente, 6 Inkunabeldrucke) und dokumentiert die Wirkungsgeschichte anhand eines quantitativ etwa ebenso großen Überlieferungscorpus. Die daraus gewonnenen Daten lassen erkennen, daß das BdN in der Hauptsache im süd- und südwestdeutschen Raum verbreitet war; weltliche Besitzer und Benutzer, Vertreter des (Hoch-)Adels und des Patriziats dominieren, die Rezeption durch den Klerus ist deutlich geringer. Die Kontextüberlieferung des BdN, aber auch einzelner Teile und Kapitel bestätigt, daß seine Gebrauchsfunktion primär im Bereich praktischer Lebenshilfe lag. Damit löste sie sich aber von den Intentionen seines Autors, der nicht nur Sachinformation über Gottes Schöpfung bieten wollte, sondern dem auch wesentlich an der Vermittlung ihres zeichenhaften Sinns gelegen war.
