Book Synopsis Selected Letters of Paul Hindemith by : Paul Hindemith
Download or read book Selected Letters of Paul Hindemith written by Paul Hindemith and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Hindemith had a multifaceted career as an internationally acclaimed composer, performer, festival organizer, teacher, lecturer, and writer. Born in Germany in 1895, he was a leading member of the musical avant-garde, and when the Nazis came to power his compositions eventually were banned as "decadent art." In 1938 Hindemith went into voluntary exile in Switzerland and in 1940 migrated to the United States, where he became a citizen. His return to Europe after the war in response to urgent calls for help in rebuilding European musical life gave rise to many inner emotional problems. This selection of letters written by Hindemith spans his entire career, from the First World War until shortly before his death in 1963. Translated and edited by a leading authority on Hindemith, the letters (some of which were written in English) reveal that he was an observant, engaging, and opinionated correspondent who took a keen interest in contemporary culture and politics. The first such selection to appear in English, the letters deal with personal and professional matters and are addressed to his wife, publishers, and friends in both Europe and America. Among the many important personalities with whom he came into contact were the composers Stravinsky and Milhaud, the conductors Mengelberg, Furtwängler, Koussevitzky, and Klemperer, and the choreographers Massine and Balanchine. Published to coincide with the centenary of Hindemith's birth, the letters fill out our portrait of him and provide an absorbing chronicle of his life and times.
Book Synopsis Lies and Epiphanies by : Chris Walton
Download or read book Lies and Epiphanies written by Chris Walton and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2014 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Lies and Epiphanies' offers case studies of 'inspiration' in five composers. Their own tales of their 'epiphanies' played a determining role in the reception history of their works: the finale of Mahler's Second Symphony was supposedly inspired by a 'lightning bolt' of inspiration at the funeral of Hans von Bulow, while Alban Berg's Violin Concerto was purportedly his direct response to the tragic early death of Alma Mahler's daughter. Chris Walton looks behind these lightning bolts to explore instead the composers' dual roles a.
Book Synopsis Igor Stravinsky, the Rake's Progress by : Paul Griffiths
Download or read book Igor Stravinsky, the Rake's Progress written by Paul Griffiths and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1982 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rake's Progress is Stravinsky's biggest work and one of the few great operas written since the 1920s, rare too for the unusual quality of its libretto, by Auden and Kallman. Its importance is undisputed, but so too are the problems it raises: problems of both performance and understanding, caused by the irony with which it is so thoroughly permeated. In aspects of style and operatic convention it looks back to the eighteenth century, and in particular to the operas of Mozart and da Ponte, while making references also to other periods, to operas from Monteverdi to Verdi. Yet at the same time it is wholly a work of the twentieth-century, and indeed it is centrally concerned with the impossibility of return, artistic, psychological or actual, as well as with the nature and limitation of human free will. The Rake's Progress is not one of unbridled dissipation but rather, more interestingly, one of attachment to naive notions of freedom and choice, and his tragedy is that he can never go back.
Download or read book Signs of Change written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signs of Change: Transformations of Christian Traditions and their Representation in the Arts, 1000–2000 focuses on the changing relationships between what gradually emerged as the Arts and Christianity, the latter term covering both a stream of ideas and its institutions. The book as a whole is addressed to a general academic audience concerned with issues of cultural history, while the individual essays are also intended as scholarly contributions within their own fields. A collaborative effort by twenty-five European and American scholars representing disciplines ranging from aesthetics to the history of art and architecture, from literature, music and the theatre to classics, church history, and theology, the volume is an interdisciplinary study of intermedial phenomena, generally in larger cultural and intellectual contexts. The focus of topics extends from single concrete objects to sets of abstract concepts and values, and from a single moment in time to an entire millennium. While Signs of Change acknowledges the importance of synthesizing efforts essential to hermeneutically informed scholarship, in order to counterbalance generalized historical narratives with detailed investigations, broad accounts are juxtaposed with specialized research projects. The deliberately unchronological grouping of contributions underlines the effort to further discussion about methodologies for writing cultural history.

Book Synopsis The Influence of Room Acoustics on Solo Music Performances by : Zora Schärer Kalkandjiev
Download or read book The Influence of Room Acoustics on Solo Music Performances written by Zora Schärer Kalkandjiev and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the question of how musicians are influenced by their room acoustical environment when playing on a concert hall stage. Even though the concept of adapting a music performance to room acoustics is often taken for granted by musicians, it is unclear if and how such adjustments take place in practice and which aspects of room acoustics play a role in this context. Empirical investigations in both real-world and simulated concert halls are presented in the book to shed light on the question. A case study with a cellist performing in European concert halls as well as a laboratory study with musicians playing in virtual room acoustical environments simulated by means of dynamic binaural synthesis were conducted. Both investigations make use of room acoustical computer models to determine the room acoustical conditions typically encountered by musicians on stage. Software-based performance analysis is employed to quantify musically and perceptually relevant aspects of performance. The influence of diverse room acoustical parameters on numerous performance characteristics is investigated with the statistical methods of multilevel regression models.
