Download or read book Americanizing Japanese Firms written by Yukio Yotsumoto and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americanizing Japanese Firms examines the concept of corporate social responsibility in Japanese manufacturing companies within the United States. The study compares the corporate philanthropy of Japanese companies against American and British companies. Specifically, the study investigates characteristics of Japanese companies that influence the level and nature of the corporate philanthropy undertaken. The relationship between size of the company and the level and nature of corporate social responsibility is also examined. Finally, the study explores how Japanese corporations learn about the American approach of corporate philanthropy. In his investigations, the author considered two contexts: first, the constitutions of Japan and the United States are analyzed at a national level to determine the position or importance of corporate philanthropy within the societies comparatively; and second, the communities in which corporations are located and act for social contribution are investigated.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the important speeches and correspondence of Governor Martha Layne Collins, the only woman to be elected governor of Kentucky. Papers from state archives chronicle the agenda and rhetoric that Collins, a former schoolteacher, used to accomplish her intertwined goals of education reform and economic development. Also included are Collins's letters to automobile makers urging them to consider Kentucky as a manufacturing site and her triumphant announcement that Toyota had selected Georgetown, Kentucky for its North American plant. An introductory essay by Elizabeth Duffy Fraas's summarizes Collins's life and career and assesses the impact of her administration on the state. The editor's notes provide context and background for each of the 199 speeches or documents included. The volume contains Collins's pivotal speeches during her rise to leadership in the Democratic Party, which chose her to chair its 1984 National Convention, and presents her vision to position Kentucky in the global marketplace. Other sections deal with related issues of labor and management, energy and environment, and health and welfare. For those interested in learning more about the challenges facing women with careers in politics, Fraas has assembled a section including Collins's statements on gender issues, motherhood, and the role of women in the political sphere.

Book Synopsis Japan in the Bluegrass by : Pradyumna P. Karan
Download or read book Japan in the Bluegrass written by Pradyumna P. Karan and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years after Toyota announced it would build a manufacturing plant in the heart of the Bluegrass, Kentucky crafts are being used to help sell Camrys at car dealerships in Japan and sushi and Japanese condiments are widely stocked on grocery shelves in a number of cities across Kentucky. In early 2000, the state boasted more than 100 Japanese companies representing a total investment of more than seven billion dollars, employing more than 33,000 Kentuckians. Japan in the Bluegrass is the first book to focus on the regional and local impact of the globalization of Japanese businesses, particularly Toyota, in the United States. Fourteen American and Japanese contributors include geographers, political scientists, sociologists, and an economist, urban planner, and environmental scientist, and their essays go beyond the traditional exploration of politics and economics to examine the social, cultural, and environmental effects of Japanese investment in Kentucky. The authors examine the factors that brought these companies to this part of the United States, which range from a well-developed system of highways to cooperation from state and local governments to hefty incentive packages. They discuss the significant influence of Toyota and its suppliers on local communities in Kentucky as well as in Toyota City, Japan. Essays also cover the social and cultural shifts that have resulted from Japanese investment, including educational activities in public schools, the relationship between business and local media, and the integration of Japanese managers and their families into Kentucky communities.
