Welcome to the reality game show that'll scare you to death! Have you got what it takes to last the night? On the reality show It's Behind You!, five contestants competing for prize money must survive the night in the dark and dangerous Umber Gorge caves, rumored to be haunted by the Puckered Maiden, a ghost who eats the hearts of her victims. But is it the malevolent spirit they should fear, or each other? As the production crew ramps up the frights, tensions rise and the secrets of the cast member start coming to light. Each of these teenagers has hidden motives for taking part in the show. But could one of them be murder? Praise for GOOD GIRLS DIE FIRST "Foxfield's focus on social niches and escalating suspense will appeal to fans of Karen McManus." —Publishers Weekly "This gothic-inspired thriller with nods to Agatha Christie and Daphne du Maurier will keep readers on the edge of their seats and turning pages as quickly as they can. It is immersing, puzzling, and unpredictable, with a surprise ending that's sure to have teens talking." —School Library Journal "Undeniably creepy from the start... With a macabre escape and a surprising amount of heart, this will leave readers feeling oddly optimistic and perhaps a little kinder to themselves..." —The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, STARRED Review " . . . the most gripping thriller of the year; hugely entertaining, high-octane and read-in-a-single-sitting." —ReadingZone

Book excerpt: This publication presents eight Czech photographers of Slovak origin working in Prague in the 1970s and 80s: Tono Stano, Rudo Prekop, Vasil Stanko, Martin Strba, Miro Svolík, Kamil Varga, Peter Zupník and Jano Pavlík, known collectively as "the Slovak New Wave." The group--described variously as "photographers living in Bohemia" or "Czech photographers of Slovak origin"--constitutes a kind of shared cultural asset for both countries and an interesting phenomenon for anyone studying the links between Czech and Slovak photography. In the 1970s and 1980s, FAMU was the only higher-education establishment in Central Europe that taught photography, and it is perhaps surprising that the members of the Slovak New Wave remained uninfluenced by the Czech photographic tradition and were able to create their own unique identity at FAMU. Despite--or possibly because of--the fact that this was never an organized group with a declared statement of purpose, their relatively homogeneous visual language became one of the first examples of postmodernism in Czechoslovakia. This volume gives special emphasis to works that were never exhibited at the time, or were shown only on the fringe of the scene.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is the predator, and who is the prey? Illuminating poetry and vivid artwork capture the awe-inspiring ways that creatures use their resources to stay alive. Who wins, the assassin bug or the spider? The bat or the frog? The ant or the honey bee? The male firefly . . . or the female? The battle for survival between predator and prey is sometimes a fight, sometimes a dance, and often involves spying, lying, or even telling the truth to get ahead. Biologist and debut author Susannah Buhrman-Deever explores these clashes in poems and prose explanations that offer both sides of the story. With beautiful, realistic illustrations that are charged with drama, Bert Kitchen captures the breathtaking moments when predator meets prey. Readers who hunger for more about the art of survival will find an extensive list of references in the back.

Book excerpt: Known for his exquisite images of birds and landscape, Eliot Porter (American, 1901–1990) was a pioneer in the use of color photography. His work also became a powerful visual argument for environmental conservation. Trained as a medical doctor and possessing a scientist's gift for close observation, Porter explored new ways of depicting nature, building blinds in trees so he could study his avian subjects at closer vantage, and producing landscape images that capture both pristine forest and ragged river canyons with equal force and brilliance. Initially encouraged by the groundbreaking photographers Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz, Porter went on to produce a body of work all his own. His 1962 Sierra Club book In Wildness Is the Preservation of the World, with its images grouped by season and accompanied by quotations from Henry David Thoreau, transformed the concept of nature photography books. Ultimately, Porter's photographs came to the attention of Congress and led to the passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964, the foundational law in wilderness management today. Eliot Porter: In the Realm of Nature contains 110 images from the collections of Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser; the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas; and of the J. Paul Getty Museum, along with an essay by Paul Martineau that discusses Porter's life and the innovations he brought to the practice of photography.

Book excerpt: Why do we sometimes meet someone and immediately feel rapport --instant friends-- as though we are reuniting after a long absence? And why are we strongly drawn towards some people, yet repelled by others, without any logical reason? Why do we enjoy some places we travel to, feeling remarkably at home, as the area is fondly familiar in some inexplicable way? Yet why do we feel uncomfortable in other locales and can hardly wait to leave? Could we be re-experiencing deeply buried memories from long ago? Are we tapping into past life experiences? Is unfinished business bringing us together with individuals we loved or hated, to balance the past? And how do we balance those karmic scales to achieve balance, peace, and harmony? Strangers in Paradise was inspired by the author's transformational experience at a sacred heaiu near Opeeakaa Falls on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Cosmic meetings and karmic relationships are set into motion in Strangers in Paradise, the charactersmoving to rhythms beyond their control. How they interact and then attempt to resolve their differences is the theme of this spiritual, healing, and romantic novel.
