Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this directed project was to develop an educational seminar for incoming college female athletes, college coaches, athletic directors, trainers, weight coaches and parents on the female athlete triad syndrome. The goals of this program were to (a) create an educational seminar to increase knowledge about the triad and how to prevent female athletes from developing it, and (b) to provide information on how to address the female athlete triad once developed. The educational seminar consists of two segments: the first being open to all athletes, family members and athletic personnel of the school with the goal of increasing education of the triad as well as raising awareness, and the second segment held amongst each team individually without the presence of family members or athletic personnel for a more private setting. An expert-review panel assessed the education seminar materials, evaluated the content and layout and provided feedback. Formative evaluation review forms for the educational seminar materials were created to assess the efficacy and value of the program.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if an educational intervention for female collegiate athletes can improve knowledge of the female athlete triad. The participants of the study were 49 female collegiate athletes from Kent State University, an NCAA affiliated university. A Triad Knowledge Questionnaire (TKQ) was distributed to four teams during the first week of this study and again during the following week. After the first administration of the TKQ, one team received an educational presentation, one team an educational handout, one team received both the presentation and handout, and the final team served as the control with no educational intervention given. The TKQ was administered again the following week to determine if there was a difference in female athlete triad knowledge among the different intervention groups. The results of the study indicated there was a significant difference (p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physically active females, or female athletes, are at risk for the condition knownas the female athlete triad (Triad). The Triad is made up of three components that are distinctly separate, but intertwined: consuming inadequate energy for how much they are exercising, poor bone health, and problems with their menstrual periods. When female athletes don0́9t consume enough energy for how much they exercise, there can be hormonal imbalances, causing the body to conserve energy from some important functions including menstruation, and increased bone turnover resulting in a higher risk of stress fractures and early osteoporosis. Female athletes at risk for the Triad have ahigher risk of being injured, and don0́9t have the energy that they need to perform physically. To combat the Triad, we performed assessments to see how many female athletes were at risk for the Triad in Division I female athletes, and were surprised at the high number that were at risk for the Triad. We provided nutrition information and interventions aimed to decrease female athlete0́9s risk for the Triad. We also developed anew, quick method for female athletes, or busy individuals, to track their diet using the video feature on their cell phones. The benefits of providing nutrition information to the female athletes included: increasing their knowledge about the Triad, and things that they could do to prevent the Triad. The interventions did cause behavior change in some female athletes to increase how much energy they were consuming, decreasing their risk for the Triad.

Book excerpt: The 1972 passage of Title IX, the federal law that prohibits sex discriminationin education, was a gamechanger for women and girls in athletics. in the forty years since the law was enacted, participation in sports—especially of girls and women—has grown dramatically. With that growth have come challenges. in Ice-n-Go: A Perspective on Sports and Life, Jenny Moshak, celebrated trainer of the legendary lady Vols basketball team and associate athletic director for sports medicine at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, reflects on the role of sports in society and addresses the high stakes and costs of winning in sports today. Ice-n-Go is a culmination of the breadth of knowledge and unique insight from Moshak’s more than twenty-five years of work in major college sports. in this highly readable new book, she covers social issues, medical concerns, motiva-tional techniques, gender roles and expectations, the impact of sports on our children, and how the body works, heals, and recovers. though she writes on serious subjects in a serious way, Moshak’s tone is always upbeat and positive with surprisingly simple strategies for improving the athletic experience for all, especially kids. An outstanding athlete herself, she shares lessons learned on her own demanding coast-to-coast bicycle ride across the united states. in sharing her stories, sound advice and fresh ideas, Moshak seeks to do for us what she has always done for the players in her care: to help protect, nurture, and grow the athlete who is in each one of us.

Book excerpt: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to summarize the current literature on the Triad and individual components, to investigate the relationship between the Triad and the prevalence in different ethnicities (White and Black), and determine if acculturation has an effect on disordered eating or the Triad in college aged females using self-report and/or objective measures. Method: 31 collegiate athletes (29 White & 2 Black) and 19 controls (16 White & 3 Black) completed Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry scans and a questionnaire on the female athlete triad. Results: No significant difference was found between Black and White athletes and controls when looking at the prevalence of the Triad (p = .326) or acculturation (Unable to assess). Conclusion: Additional research on the prevalence of the Triad in different ethnicities and whether acculturation has an effect on disordered eating or the Triad is necessary to accurately describe the extent of the problems.

Is there a natural limit to women's athletic ability? How has Title IX opened up opportunities for women athletes? Every semester since 1996, Bonnie Morris has encouraged students to confront questions like these in one of the most provocative college courses in America: Athletics and Gender, A History of Women's Sports. What's the Score?, Morris's energetic teaching memoir, is a peek inside that class and features a decades-long dialogue with student athletes about the greater opportunities for women—on the playing field, as coaches, and in sports media. From corsets to segregated schoolyards to the WNBA, we find women athletes the world over conquering unique barriers to success. What's the Score? is not only an insider's look at sports education but also an engaging guide to turning points in women's sports history that everyone should know.

Their natural tendency to use talking as a primary form of communication is essential to their experiences and successes in sports. Women and girls tend to have BFFs, collaborate during periods of stress, express empathy for one another, worry about themselves and others, and desire to have fun in sports, which makes their experiences of sports and competition different from their male counterparts. Female strengths are grounded in both mind and body, and they take these strengths onto the court, field, and track. There are now dozens of studies showing how the female brain and hormones operate quite differently than those of men. This book reveals the ways in which these differences confirm that intense emotions about relationships are part of the sporting life for female competitors. Joan Steidinger uses real stories to show that women and girls compete at very high

The problems that result are called the Female Athlete Triad characterized by low energy availability with or without disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction/ amenorrhea, and osteoporosis and either alone or in combination can lead to more serious pathologies. The goal here is to determine whether intercollegiate female athletes exhibit elements of the triad at Western Washington University. Sixteen athletes from Western Washington University's soccer and cross-country program were recruited. Participant's average age was 19.24 years with an average height of 65.83 inches, average weight at 131.69 lbs and 23.08% body fat and 21.43. Each participant provided 72 hour dietary recall, and kept daily records on menstrual cycle changes and daily activities during and after the competitive season. Body composition and bone density was assessed during and after the season. Also collected daily, were urine samples for measures of estrogen, progesterone and cortisol (a stress marker). None of the athletes suffered from all three components of the triad but fourteen were deficient in caloric intake and many were in macronutrient intakes (Deficiencies: sixteen for Vitamin D.; ten for calcium; thirteen in magnesium; nine in iron and all for potassium). Caloric intake remained the same even during competition while expenditure differed significantly (p=0.05). Estrogen and progesterone levels were lower but not pathologically lower during the competitive season.
