Book excerpt: When musician Anna Greene dies at the untimely age of 42, her family and friends are stunned by their sudden loss. Theo, Anna’s husband, fluctuates between numb grief and fury at the world. Fifteen-year-old Beth is fighting her own demons, while little brother Sam just misses his mum. But Anna has left one last request: that those who love her should walk the Pilgrims’ Way to Canterbury in her memory. Four months later, they set out on a hundred-mile journey that will change their lives for ever. Walking with the family are Father Stephen – a priest wrestling with a deeply personal crisis of conscience – and Anna’s sparky best friend, single mother Tamsin. Then a stranger joins the group. Who is he? And what was the catastrophe that drove Anna from home a decade earlier? Over the course of nine days, the pilgrims share their memories of Anna, and gradually the layers of her life are peeled back to uncover secrets no one ever suspected. Can those who love her live with all that is past? ‘Beautifully written, emotionally resonant and truthful, this is an inspiring novel about the many faces of love and the struggle to come to terms with grief.’ Elizabeth Buchan, author of Consider the Lily ‘Sarah Meyrick’s latter-day pilgrims are as congenial companions for the reader as for one another. A highly accomplished debut filled with wisdom and grace.’ Michael Arditti, author of The Enemy of the Good

Book excerpt: Social scientific studies of medicine typically assume that systems of medical knowledge are uniform and consistent. But while anthropologists have long rejected the notion that cultures are discrete, bounded, and rule-drive entities, medical anthropology has been slower to develop alternative approaches to understanding cultures of health. This provocative volume considers the theoretical, methodological, and ethnographic implications of the fact that medical knowledge is frequently dynamic, incoherent, and contradictory, and that and our understanding of it is necessarily incomplete and partial. In diverse settings from indigenous cultures to Western medical industries, contributors consider such issues as how to define the boundaries of “medical” knowledge versus other kinds of knowledge; how to understand overlapping and shifting medical discourses; the medical profession’s need for anthropologists to produce “explanatory models”; the limits of the Western scientific method and the potential for methodological pluralism; constraints on fieldwork including violence and structural factors limiting access; and the subjectivity and interests of the researcher. On Knowing and Not Knowing in the Anthropology of Medicine will stimulate innovative thinking and productive debate for practitioners, researchers, and students in the social science of health and medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo Tolstoy’s and Vladimir Nabokov’s radically opposed aesthetic worldviews emanate from a shared intuition—that approaching a text skeptically is easy, but trusting it is hard Two figures central to the Russian literary tradition—Tolstoy, the moralist, and Nabokov, the aesthete—seem to have sharply conflicting ideas about the purpose of literature. Tatyana Gershkovich undermines this familiar opposition by identifying a shared fear at the root of their seemingly antithetical aesthetics: that one’s experience of the world might be entirely one’s own, private and impossible to share through art. Art in Doubt: Tolstoy, Nabokov, and the Problem of Other Minds reconceives the pair’s celebrated fiction and contentious theorizing as coherent, lifelong efforts to reckon with the problem of other people’s minds. Gershkovich demonstrates how the authors’ shared yearning for an impossibly intimate knowledge of others formed and deformed their fiction and brought them through parallel logic to their rival late styles: Tolstoy’s rustic simplicity and Nabokov’s baroque complexity. Unlike those authors for whom the skeptical predicament ends in absurdity or despair, Tolstoy and Nabokov both hold out hope that skepticism can be overcome, not by force of will but with the right kind of text, one designed to withstand our impulse to doubt it. Through close readings of key canonical works—Anna Karenina, The Kreutzer Sonata, Hadji Murat, The Gift, Pale Fire—this book brings the twin titans of Russian fiction to bear on contemporary debates about how we read now, and how we ought to.

Book excerpt: Can Ros Wynne, who has lost everything she thought defined her, find her true life—and her true love—surrounded by the lingering history of the once-grand Winter Manor? When Ros unexpectedly inherits Winter Manor on the condition that she oversee the restoration of the remote and dilapidated house, it seems the perfect place for her to retreat from her recently failed relationship, the death of her mother, and the loss of her job. But Winter Manor is not entirely at rest. The echoes of its past reach forward into the present, and Ros's life is perceptibly shaped by the lives—and loves—of the people who inhabited those rooms and corridors in the centuries before her. Then Anna arrives. The architect—with her designer clothes, hot car, and air of supreme professionalism—is at first an unwelcome, if necessary, intrusion. But as Ros learns Anna's truths, she finds solace from her past losses in their developing intimacy. And when their love is threatened, Ros must decide whether her own ghosts will forever define her, or if she can embrace her life for what it is—past, present, and future.

Book excerpt: The first thing Anna noticed was the great aroma of coffee coming from the kitchen. Sam must be early she thought. She jumped from bed and yelled down the stairs, " Sorry Sam, I will be right there just let me grab a shower." That being said she was quite surprised to find a tall handsome stranger in her kitchen staring out the window. He was at least 6' 3” with black hair pulled into a tail at the nape of his neck that hung to the middle of his back. He looked like a man used to hard work and well able to do it. The question was, who was he? What was he doing in her kitchen? She thought, I should be frightened or angry but she felt curious. He jumped as she said, "I think you’re in the wrong kitchen, mine definitely did not come equipped with a man!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinician and psychoanalyst Warren S. Poland addresses some of the key questions in the field today. What is an analysis? What is the relationship of the individual patient to the specific analyst and to the work at hand? How can attention to the uniqueness of an individual patient be balanced with the inevitable pressures of the clinical partnership? And, put in the other direction, how can respect for the inevitable imperatives of the dyadic field be balanced with the primacy of the exploration of the patient's mind? How can the interactive context of clinical work be created without compromising the centrality of the search for meanings derivative from unconscious forces within the patient as a singular individual?. Containing clinical examples, this book should be of interest to anyone interested in psychotherapy.

It is Walk on the Wild Side. It reveals something to them and they meet with their doctor friends. They begin seminars through organizations. One event has an incident which lands Liam, Anna, Mike and Dave in an extreme Life Challenge. They use The Seal's for Healing and Protection. They hold their moral and social Code of Honor in the highest esteem. They faced double-edged situations and proceed to Choose Wisely in Speaking their Truths. They live life how they believe and Walk Their Talk. 'One of the Single Most Important and vital aspects of the human condition living on this Earth is our Ability to Effectively Communicate with all other human beings without prejudice and with tolerance to foster a rapport with others and share knowledge, history, information and truths. Liam said emphatically, "If ever I felt there were others who I likened to The Four Musketeers, 'One for All and All for One,' it is the four of us. We each battle for each other to the benefit of the whole. Not many friends can do this as well as we four. It is totally awesome." Mike retires from the military and it is quite an event with a formal dinner and a dance. A Code of Honor is provided. The idea of listening to one's Inner Whisperings is discussed. In a wooded forest, something is found and this is quite an important event. The four plan and set dates to go on a road trip in our lovely motorcoach a week after school began. Now, on to Book Four, the first half of Volume VI.
