Book excerpt: William Reeve provides a detailed textual analysis of Heinrich von Kleist's drama Das Käthchen von Heilbronn, demonstrating that Kleist drew its poetic images, themes, and general atmosphere from the Prussian aristocratic class into which he had been born. Reeve's comprehensive re-reading of Käthchen throws light on the enigmas and textual incongruities that have puzzled Kleist's commentators in the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, there has been no general reference work that describes the various stagings of Kleist's plays since the first performance of Die Familie Schroffenstein in 1804. Several dissertations dealing with the stage history of individual works appeared between 1920 and 1932 and some articles discussing influential individual productions have been published. In Kleist on Stage, 1804 1987, however, William Reeve has used the reviews of newspaper critics during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to provide the first general survey of the reception of Kleist's seven completed dramas.

Kleist's "Der Zubrochene Krug" Turning now from this brief general survey of Hauptmann's works we undertake a somewhat more detai ed study of one of hi earlier dramas, Der Biberpelz, and of its relations to Heinrich von Kleist's comedy, her Zerbrochene Krug. The plot of Der Hiber pels is briefly as follows: The action is the repetition of two thefts, the thief in both cases being a washerwoman, Frau Wolff, and the person robbed a wealthy man of the village, a certain Herr Kruger. The first thing stolen is a cord of wood. Frau Wolff'hears of this wood through her daughter, Leontine, who was Herr Kruger's servant, but who has left him because he commended her to carry this wood into the sheds. Kruger, when he finds that the wood 1 stolen, reports the theft to the town Judge, von Wehrhahn, and tells the Judge that since the servant neglected carrying in the wood, her parents will have to pay for it. Frau Wolff is summoned and told that her daughter must return to Kruger's service. But she invents a falsehood, saying that her husband does not wish heontine to work any more, and also tells the Judge that she knows nothing of the wood since she was at Trepow the night it was stolen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes the trial so appealing as dramatic form? Why do we watch? Is it simply the quest for truth and justice? Or is it much more than that? From the time of Sophocles, the court has fascinated audiences and dramatists alike. Kleist is no exception, as each of his dramas and many of his stories and anecdotes contain a trial of some sort from its most primitive form of hand-to-hand combat in the duel to more conventional legal proceedings in secular, military and ecclesiastical courts. At trial, we desire, whether consciously or unconsciously, to have our own system of beliefs and behaviours affirmed rather than to attempt to achieve justice: self-interest prevails at the expense of truth and equity. The focus of this book is the tension between the restoration of dikê, the balance of natural order, and the pursuit of truth and justice as impetus behind the trial. With recourse to the concept of legal instrumentalism, which underscores this preference for order over justice in both the law and literature, the author examines Kleist's dramas to determine the extent to which those individuals in positions of power are able to manipulate the proceedings, seeking not justice and truth, but rather the validation of their own particular version of order. The trial, a tool generally thought to be designed to discover truth and to mete out justice, is used instead, in the hands of the powerful, as an instrument of control and degradation.

Book excerpt: The publication of this volume of essays marks the centenary of the birth of Bertolt Brecht on 10 February 1898. The essays were commissioned from scholars and critics around the world, and cover six main areas: recent biographical controversies; neglected theoretical writings; the semiotics of Brechtian theatre; new readings of classic texts; Brecht's role and reception in the GDR; and contemporary appropriations of Brecht's work. This volume will be essential reading for all those interested in twentieth century theatre, modern German studies, and the contemporary reassessment of post-war culture in the wake of German unification and the collapse of Stalinist communism in Central and Eastern Europe. The essays in this volume also address a variety of general questions, concerning - for example - authorship and textuality; the nature of Brecht's Marxism in relation to his understanding of modernity, science and Enlightenment reason; Marxist aesthetics; radical cultural politics; and feminist performance theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of Heinrich von Kleist unfolds between precise depictions and moral extremes. Crystallized in words, his characters appear as paradigms of human fallibility. Their passions and obsessions, their inadequacies and longings are captured in a writing style that reveals its influence even in novels and plays of the twentieth century. This volume takes the literary reception of Kleist as one of its focal points and, furthermore, considers the author's oeuvre and his life on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of his death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990. The book surveys of the development of German theatre from a market sideshow into an important element of cultural life and political expression. It examines Schiller as ‘theatre poet’ at Mannheim, Goethe’s work as director of the court theatre at Weimar, and then traces the rapid commercial decline that made it difficult for Kleist and impossible for Büchner to see their plays staged in their own lifetime. Four representative texts are analysed: Schiller’s The Robbers, Goethe’s Iphigenia on Tauris, Kleist’s The Prince of Homburg, and Büchner’s Woyzeck. This title will be of interest to students of theatre and German literature.
