But Noodle’s interested in being an only cat, and not even the best treats can persuade her to work with Persephone. Which means I’ll have to rely on the humans to help us crack this case. Rosamund wants us to check out her ex and an old high school frenemy who’s become a witch. That’s where Persephone and I come in. Now we’re on our way to Nashville to find the guitar. I’m a little—make that a lot—nervous about calling myself a professional crime solver. Included in my list of suspects are an obsessed fan, a hotshot singer looking to blaze his own path, and a disgruntled ex-nanny. But this unlikely crew might turn out to be my secret weapons. Because Duke doesn’t like newcomers so much. He’s set in his ways, just like his human dad. Persephone and I think the old hound might be protecting the thief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pink Globalization, Christine R. Yano examines the creation and rise of Hello Kitty as a part of Japanese Cute-Cool culture. Yano argues that the international popularity of Hello Kitty is one aspect of what she calls pink globalization—the spread of goods and images labeled cute (kawaii) from Japan to other parts of the industrial world. The concept of pink globalization connects the expansion of Japanese companies to overseas markets, the enhanced distribution of Japanese products, and the rise of Japan's national cool as suggested by the spread of manga and anime. Yano analyzes the changing complex of relations and identities surrounding the global reach of Hello Kitty's cute culture, discussing the responses of both ardent fans and virulent detractors. Through interviews, Yano shows how consumers use this iconic cat to negotiate gender, nostalgia, and national identity. She demonstrates that pink globalization allows the foreign to become familiar as it brings together the intimacy of cute and the distance of cool. Hello Kitty and her entourage of marketers and consumers wink, giddily suggesting innocence, sexuality, irony, sophistication, and even sheer happiness. Yano reveals the edgy power in this wink and the ways it can overturn, or at least challenge, power structures.

Persephone and I are off to Seattle to solve the crime, but things are much different behind the scenes. Whatever I do, I have to keep my inner fangirl in check, or my favorite show could get eliminated for good.

Book excerpt: There’s no such thing as a typical day at Helping Paws Animal Shelter, and this wasn’t the first time I’ve had a soggy box waiting for me on the doorstep with a disgruntled cat inside. However, this was the first time the cat talked to me. What did the barista put in my coffee? Persephone insists she’s been catnapped, and she’s witnessed an art heist. There’s a huge reward for the safe return of the painting, and that money could go a long way to helping all our animals find their forever homes. Now I have to convince the gallery owner and her associates—including the suspicious but adorable Henry the Hottie—that I can find the priceless painting. I don’t know a thing about art, but here I am, at an exhibit opening, wearing a dress called Lucky and co-conspiring with a talking cat. Typical days? They’re a thing of the past, especially if Persephone and I can crack the case and catch the thief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting over in paradise can be murder. When my fiancé leaves me high and dry, I jump at the chance to relocate to the tropical island of Half Moon Cross. I haven't talked to my Aunt Astrid in years and I've never run a bird-themed pirate tour company, but my cockatiel, Chicken, and I are desperate for a fresh start. We're ready for sun, surf, and parrots. What we get is murder. I might be in paradise, but I didn’t leave my problems in Boston. My Aunt is a virtual stranger and I'm scared she regrets giving me Parrots of The Caribbean. Her scarlet macaw Ruby, star of her tours, refuses to go out with me. But I didn't run escape rooms for years without learning how to solve a problem. I put Chicken in a pint-sized pirate costume and we're off. Our first voyage is almost smooth sailing—then my hawk-eyed cockatiel alerts us to a dead body on the beach! The victim is an ex-employee and my aunt’s been framed. If Astrid takes the blame, it will mean the end of Parrots of the Caribbean and the bird sanctuary that she cares for. And since the police aren't looking beyond her, it's up to me to find the real killer. Good thing I have some unexpected help from my new coworker and fast friend, Meg. She introduces me to Carlos, the handsome ex-detective who now makes the best fruity drinks on the island. We have too many suspects and not enough time. But when Chicken finds a key piece of evidence, my cockatiel might just crack the case. Feathers will fly and justice will be served in this tropical cozy caper!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the millennium, international youth culture is dominated by mainly two types of aesthetics: the African American cool, which, propelled by Hip-Hop music, has become the world's favorite youth culture; and the Japanese aesthetics of kawaii or cute, that is distributed internationally by Japan's powerful anime industry. The USA and Japan are cultural superpowers and global trendsetters because they make use of two particular concepts that hide complex structures under their simple surfaces and are difficult to define, but continue to fascinate the world: cool and kawaii. The Cool-Kawaii: Afro-Japanese Aesthetics and New World Modernity, by Thorsten Botz-Bornstein, analyzes these attitudes and explains the intrinsic powers that are leading to a fusion of both aesthetics. Cool and kawaii are expressions set against the oppressive homogenizations that occur within official modern cultures, but they are also catalysts of modernity. Cool and kawaii do not refer us back to a pre-modern ethnic past. Just like the cool African American man has almost no relationship with traditional African ideas about masculinity, the kawaii shTjo is not the personification of the traditional Japanese ideal of the feminine, but signifies an ideological institution of women based on Japanese modernity in the Meiji period, that is, a feminine image based on westernization. At the same time, cool and kawaii do not transport us into a futuristic, impersonal world of hypermodernity based on assumptions of constant modernization. Cool and kawaii stand for another type of modernity, which is not technocratic, but rather 'Dandyist' and closely related to the search for human dignity and liberation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast-paced, evocative, and brutal, The Cold Cold Ground is a brilliant depiction of Belfast at the height of the Troubles — and of a cop treading a thin, thin line —from The New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-winning author Adrian McKinty. “McKinty is one of the most striking and most memorable crime voices to emerge on the scene in years.” —Tana French Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force. Add to this the fact that, as a Catholic policeman, it doesn’t matter which side he’s on, because nobody trusts him, and Sergeant Duffy really is in a no-win situation.

Book excerpt: Kitsch in home decoration - from the blue-blood mecca of a 19th-century Vanderbilt mansion to bogus Aztec living-room ensembles, "Instant Congo" furniture, and Santa Claus toilet paper. Kitsch in advertising - from an early Coco-Cola belt buckle depicting a naked nun to the near-sadistic depiction of water-logged caskets to engender guilt feelings in the bereaved. Architectural kitsch - from nonfunctional wooden church buttresses and Gilded Age palazzi to "the corniest building in America," "the world's tallest shanty," and a leaning Tower of Pizza. Kitsch in "art" - from an 1832 statue of George Washington looking like a Turkish bath patron to phony scrimshaw, Venus de Milo candles, do-it-yourself "primitive" plywood plaques, and Mona Lisa drawings-by-computer. Show-biz kitsch - world's fairs; dance marathons; the films of Griffith, DeMille, and Berkeley; the "music styles" of Lawrence Welk, LIberace, Jobriath, and Alice Cooper.
