Book excerpt: The farm house called Kintyre may look ordinary but it holds a secret that only the women who love it can discover. Throughout the 20th century three women live there with their families: Fiona who was there when the house was built, Sara who came to the house as a happy bride and turned into a lonely, eccentric recluse, and Kathryn who was strongly drawn to the house without understanding why. Each woman tells the story of how the gifts the house gave to her affected her life.

Book excerpt: The area covered by this cruising guide stretches northwards from the Mull of Kintyre to the Ardamurchan peninsula, detailing some of the finest cruising grounds to be found anywhere in the world. Within easy reach of all the main harbours and marinas lie an abundance of lochs and islands with numerous idyllic anchorages to explore. Some of these are easy to find, others pose more of a navigational challenge and are accessed via intricate channels using a series of well-described transits, others lie beyond turbulent tidal sounds. All reward with stunning scenery and there is somewhere for everyone, whether on a first-time visit, or a return to familiar waters. This new edition, updated by Edward Mason, continues the long-respected legacy of CCC publications for cruising sailors. Information on harbours and marinas has been thoroughly revised, and plans have been updated throughout. Several new photographs have been included to help to identify key navigational features as well as to entice further exploration. Details on plans have been updated with reference to the Imray chart pack for the area (2800 Kintyre to Ardnamurchan). References to Bob Bradfield’s useful Antares large scale charts are also included.
Book Synopsis The Mull of Kintyre Review by : Mull of Kintyre Review
Download or read book The Mull of Kintyre Review written by Mull of Kintyre Review and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-07-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Review team were appointed to examine all available evidence relating to the findings of the RAF Board of Inquiry in the fatal accident on 2 June 1994 in which RAF Chinook helicopter ZD576 crashed on the Mull of Kintyre, killing all 29 on board. The accident resulted in one of the worst peacetime accident and dealt a severe blow to the services and agencies of which the passengers were important members. The investigating Board were unable to determine a definite cause of the accident despite detailed analysis. They, however, concluded that the most probable cause was the selection by the pilots of an inappropriate rate of climb which was insufficient to enable them to safely overfly the high ground of the Mull of Kintyre. The finding has been and remains controversial. The unfairness to deceased aircrew in disciplinary procedures was recognised and the Air Force Board has accepted the introduction of a provision which created a very high standard of proof in relation to findings of negligence. Because of the absence of a cockpit recorder and flight data recorder it cannot be known what was going on in the cockpit in the moments before the crash. The Reviewing Officers' approach to this gap in the evidence was to apply to both pilots what amounted to a presumption of negligence which was inconsistent with the standard of proof. In conclusion this Review recommends that the findings of pilot negligence be set aside; that the Ministry of Defence should consider offering an apology the pilots' families; and that the Ministry of Defence should reconsider its policy and procedures for the transport of personnel
