Book excerpt: "...they disappeared into the dark mist and searing water. Just simple as that, they were on Earth no longer..." Over a year and a half later, Ellyora finds herself seeking the myth world of Alora once again. With her little brother kidnapped by monsters, and God calling her name, she is lost in that far away land that still misses its king. When a stranger named Laythe Alban comes along, she doesn't know if he is an Angel of God or a Demon from Hell, and that makes things all the more surreal. Zage Royal is rebuilding his life around the only two people in the world that seem to care about him: Flaren and Blythe, who are trying to start a life together. But when someone attacks their home and sends them running, they call upon an old friend. Malachi Raziel is beaten, bloody, and broken beyond repair: Dying in all sense of the word. An old adversary from his past is back, and tearing open old scars. In Malachi's darkest hour, only one thing seems to be his hope. But the problem is that he can't decide if she'll be the cause of his salvation or damnation. Bringing back your favorite heroes and heroines, bringing in your worst nightmares, and bringing forth characters that may be one or the other. Foolish Kings, the second installment of the Missing King Chronicles will keep you wanting more, and draw you back into Alora yet again.

Book excerpt: A Remarkably Intimate Tale of the Intrigue, Ruthlessness, and Majesty of Henry VIII's Court. When country lad Will Somers lands himself the plum position of jester to the mercurial King Henry VIII, he has no idea that he's just been handed a front-row seat to history. With a seat near the throne and an ear to the floor, Somers witnesses firsthand the dizzying power struggles and sly scheming that marked the reign of the fiery Tudor king. Somers watches the rise and fall of some of the most enigmatic women in history, including the tragic Katherine of Aragon, the doomed Anne Boleyn, and Mary Tudor, who confided in the jester as she made the best of the fragile life of a princess whom everyone wished was a prince. Based on the life of the real Will Somers, King's Fool is infused with Margaret Campbell Barnes' trademark rich detail and historical accuracy. This intimate peek into the royal chambers gives readers a unique view on one of the most tumultuous periods in English history. Book excerpt: As revolution simmers, a poet finds himself with a chance for the crown In Etrara, the winter is bitter and endless, but Valemar does not feel the chill. A loyal courtier, he prefers wine and poetry to palace intrigue and has never let ambition draw him into danger. But when the dire portents of a soothsayer darken a royal feast, all the land learns that the king’s days are numbered. Revolution is coming, and soon a new head will wear the crown. But whose will it be? While carousing at a gambling den in the lower city, Val’s cousin kills one of the king’s favorites in a barroom brawl. Rather than leave his kin to the mercy of the city guards, Val helps him flee and take refuge in a fishing village on the far side of the kingdom. Here Val learns a secret that could change Etrara forever and turn this carefree poet into the savior of a frostbitten land.

Book excerpt: James VI and I, the first monarch to reign over Scotland, England and Ireland, has long endured a mixed reputation. To many, he is simply the homosexual King, the inveterate witch-roaster, the smelly sovereign who never washed, the colourless man behind the authorised Bible bearing his name, or the drooling fool whose speech could barely be understood. For too long, he has paled in comparison to his more celebrated Tudor and Stuart forebears. But who was he really? To what extent have myth, anecdote, and rumour obscured him? In this new and ground-breaking biography, James's story is laid bare and a welter of scurrilous, outrageous assumptions penned by his political opponents put to rest. What emerges is a portrait of Elizabeth I's successor as his contemporaries knew him: a gregarious, idealistic man obsessed with the idea of family, whose personal and political goals could never match up to reality. With reference to letters, libels and state papers, it casts fresh light on the personal, domestic, international and sexual politics of this misunderstood sovereign. 'A real page-turner for lovers of history' - Philippa Gregory

Book excerpt: Sidi is dying. In the last days of this all-powerful tyrant, his faithful court fool takes stock of the decades he has spent in the king's service. For the many years have left certain indelible wounds. During his service, the fool has been the king's closest counsel, his most trusted companion and adviser, privy to the king's deepest secrets and most intimate thoughts. It is an honoured position for which many other courtiers would pay a hefty price. Something the fool understands only too well, for this closeness has indeed come at a terrible cost. What price the confidence of a great king? Is it stories, jokes, witty repartee? Or does the debt fall closer to home? Perhaps it must be paid far from the magnificent palaces, feasting and festivities of the royal court. Perhaps it must be paid in the death jails of a formidable prison fortress far out in the desert; a place so feared that few dare to speak its name . . . Translated from the French by Ben Faccini

Book excerpt: Philippe de Remi (1200/1210–65) holds a remarkable position in the legacy of the thirteenth-century literary world. A layman, landholder, and professional administrator, rather than a court poet or member of the clergy, Philippe de Remi wrote poems, songs, and long verse narratives that were grounded in his familiarity with the literary genres of his day. While Philippe paid homage to Chrétien de Troyes and other important secular writers of the period, his station in society and an intended audience of family and friends, not patrons, allowed him the freedom to treat courtly conventions with some independence and to explore human motivations across the social spectrum. Barbara Sargent-Baur brings to the modern English-speaking reader a translation of three of Philippe’s most important compositions: his two verse romances, Manekine and John and Blonde, as well as his single short verse tale, “Foolish Generosity.” This volume gathers the first English stand-alone prose translations of these romances, which have been previously published only as line-by-line versions facing the Old French originals. Sargent-Baur’s English translation of “Foolish Generosity” is the first rendering from Old French in any language. These important translations allow increased access to Philippe de Remi’s attractive narrative works, expanding their audience beyond an Old French readership to the wider academic community.
