Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of King Richard the Third of England King richard the third, known com mouly in history as Richard the Usurper, was perhaps as bad a man as the principle of hered itary sovereignty ever raised to the throne, or perhaps it should rather be said, as the principle of hereditary sovereignty ever made. There is no evidence that his natural disposition was marked with any peculiar depravity. He was made reckless, unscrupulous, and cruel by the influences which surrounded him, and the cir cumstances in which he lived, and by being habituated to believe, from his earliest child hood, that the family to which he belonged were born to live in luxury and splendor, and to reign, while the millions that formed the great mass of the community were created only to toil and to obey. The manner in which the principles of pride, ambition, and desperate love of power, which were instilled into his mind in his earliest years, brought forth in the end their. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedy of King Richard III In this edition of shakespeare an attempt is made to present the greater plays of the dramatist in their literary aspect, and not merely as material for the study of philology or'grammar. Criticism purely verbal and textual has only been included to such an extent as may serve to help the student in the appreciation of the essential poetry. Questions of date and literary history have been fully dealt with in the Introductions, but the larger space has been devoted to the interpretative rather than the matter-of-fact order of scholar' lship. Aesthetic judgments are never final, but the Editors have attempted to suggest points of view from which the analysis of dramatic motive and dramatic character may be profitably undertaken. In the Notes likewise, while it is hoped that all unfamiliar expressions and allusions have been adequately explained, yet it has been thought even more important to consider the dramatic value of each scene, and the part which it plays in relation to the whole. These general principles are common to the whole series; in detail each Editor is alone responsible for the play intrusted to him. Every volume of the series has been provided with 3. Glossary, an Essay upon Metre, and an Index; and Appen dices have been added upon points of special interest, which could not conveniently be treated in the Introduction or the Notes. The text is based by the several Editors on that of the Gloee edition: the only omissions made are those that are unavoidable in an edition likely to be used by young students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richard the Third: A Poem In my road to Weymouth, where his Majesty George III. Was residing, whom I wished to see there in his simple privacy, and more like his real self, as the individual king divested of his state, and of the needful appendages of his royal station, I reached Abbey Cerne, and finding some ruins of the ancient monastery there, I amused myself with examining them, and determined to pass the night at the little comfortable village inn at that place. As I was taking my tea alone in its retired room, the crimes and violences of our earlier history, and the characters of our kings during the feudal period, became the subject of my solitary medita tions; and in musing over these, the popular history of our Richard III. Strongly arrested my attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
