Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These pages reflect J. W. Christopher's vision for the church. His vision is that Christians will grow strong in their faith, continually rejoice in the hope of the gospel, and sincerely love one another. Faith, hope and love, the virtues of the Christian life, are what Thoughts of a Modern-Day Sojourner is about. In this book you will find fresh new insights which are challenging. J. W. Christopher does not compromise and brings conviction where it is needed. He confronts many problems facing the church today and offers solutions. He challenges the popular notion today of what it means to be spiritual, showing another side of spirituality that is often neglected or forgotten. You will also find this work inspiring. There are many writings which encourage hope in the midst of suffering and trial. There are writings that comfort the hurting, describing what it means to endure hardship, and how to believe in hope when everything seems to be against it. This book is authentic in its many applications and concerns real-life issues. It is not a product of the Christian sub-culture. If you have suffered on your walk of faith, then you will likely find yourself in these pages. Thoughts of a Modern-day Sojourner promises enough variety to serve every kind of person who sojourns toward the heavenly frontier.

Book excerpt: Thanks to these generous donors for making the publication of the books in this series possible: Lloyd E. Cotsen; The Maurice Amado Foundation; National Endowment for the Humanities; and the National Foundation for Jewish Culture Tales from Arab Lands presents tales from North Africa, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq in the latest volume of the most important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. This is the third book in the multi-volume series in the tradition of Louis Ginzberg?s timeless classic, Legends of the Jews. The tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives (IFA), named in Honor of Dov Noy, at The University of Haifa, a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now. Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context. Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography. Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This series is a monument to a rich but vanishing oral tradition. This series is a monument to a rich but vanishing oral tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heroes are people we look up to and admire, perhaps because of their great feats of strength and courage. The Bible is full of godly heroes who lived lives of courage, faith, and conviction. They were not always men and women of great natural ability. But God has always delighted in taking ordinary people, and using them to do extraordinary things, for Him. These Sunday School lessons are meant to bring these Bible heroes to life, not just so we can admire what they've done, but also to encourage us to know that God might just be calling us to be modern heroes of faith, for Him. We can find courage in reading how God faithfully provided for His heroes of the past. Our faith can grow, as we study time after time where God's hand moved to protect and strengthen them. And we can be resolved that when God calls us, we can be ready to follow in the footprints of the Old and New Testament Heroes of faith.

In the new and highly successful approach of solution-focused conflict management described here, the focus is on discovering these opportunities to find the "win-win" scenario. The key lies in asking eliciting questions about goals, exceptions, and competencies and in motivating clients to change. Clients' perspectives are considered primary, and they are empowered to formulate their own hopes for the future and to devise ways to make them happen. Focusing on the preferred future facilitates change in the desired direction.

Book excerpt: Eleven tales explore the early history of Scotland’s constant struggle for freedom from the English Scottish history is full of tales of blood and sacrifice, great heroes and fierce warriors, and above all, the constant battle between the Scots and the Brits for Scotland’s independence. For hundreds of years, Scotland and England teetered between war, peace, and unity, and being Scottish royalty could bring as much danger as it could power and riches. The legendary stories included in Claymore and Kilt follow the rise and fall of the great Scottish kings of old. With tales including those of the sons of Cathmor, who vowed to avenge their father’s murder, the strange riddle that saved a lord’s life, and the king who loved only one thing more than his beautiful dog, this collection gives a voice to the complicated history of Scottish kings and castles.
