Book excerpt: This is a shortened versión of my doctoral thesis which examines cultural words in Latin and their translation into Old English. To this end, a definition and classification of cultural words is offered and applied to the study of King Alfred’s translation of the ‘Consolidatio Philosophiae’. Alfred’s method of translation is explored in the light of the skopos theory and assessed in terms of adequacy to the socio-cultural and political context of 9th century Anglo-Saxon Wessex. Naturally, the initial format of the thesis has been made so as to facilitate reading for a more general public.

Book excerpt: The Old English Boethius is an Old English translation / adaptation of the sixth-century Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius, dating from between c. 880 and 950. Boethius's work is prosimetrical, alternating between prose and verse, and one of the two surviving manuscripts of the Old English translation renders the poems as Old English alliterative verse: these verse translations are known as the Metres of Boethius. NOTE: While Introduction and notes are in modern English, and a glossary is also included, the book does not contain a translation into modern English of the text of Consolation of Philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992 The Medieval Consolation of Philosophy is an annotated bibliography looking at the scholarship generated by the translations of the works of Boethius. The book looks at translations which were produced in medieval England, France, and Germany and addresses the influence exercised by Boethius, which extended into almost every area of medieval intellectual and artistic life. The book acts in two ways, as a whole the book acts as a bibliography and study of the European tradition of Consolatio translations, but viewed on a chapter-by-chapter basis, it is a collection of independent bibliographies on the individual vernacular traditions. The book contains separate chapters looking at the Consolatio traditions of medieval France and Germany.

Download or read book King Alfred's Book of Laws written by Todd Preston and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early Middle Ages, King Alfred (reigned 871-99) gained fame as the ruler who brought learning back to England after decades of Viking invasion. Although analysis of Alfred's canon typically focuses on his religious and philosophical texts, his relatively overlooked law code, or Domboc, reveals much about his rule, and how he was perceived in subsequent centuries. Joining major voices in the fields of early English law and literature, this exploration of King Alfred's influential text traces its evolution from its 9th century origins to reappearances in the 11th, 12th, and 16th centuries. Alfred's use of the vernacular and representation of secular practices, this work contends, made the Domboc an ideal text for establishing a particularly "English" national identity.

Book excerpt: Provides a comprehensive inventory of all English translations of the 'Consolatio' of Boethius and supplies basic information on the salient features that interested readers will need in initial phases of research on the large and complex English translation tradition. This volume is a reference work, organized chronologically in its sections, with a separate entry for each translator's work. The sections are defined by the type of translations they comprise, whether complete, partial, meters only, etc. The plan of the book is encyclopedic in nature: some biographical material is provided for each translator; the translations are described briefly, as are their linguistic peculiarities, their implied audiences, their links with other translations, and their general reception. Sample passages from the translations are provided, and where possible these are two of the most well-known moments in the 'Consolatio': the appearance of Lady Philosophy, narrated by the Prisoner, and the cosmological hymn to the 'Deus' of the work, sung by Lady Philosophy.

Download or read book Alfred's metres of Boethius written by Alfred (King of England) and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these poems, King Alfred re-built the Latin verses from Boethius' De Consolatione Philosophiae (`On the Consolation of Philosophy') into new alliterative poems, via an Old English prose intermediary. The stirring images and stories of Boethius' original are retained - streams, legends, animals, volcanoes - and developed for an Anglo-Saxon audience to include the Gothic invasion of Italy (Metre 1), the figure of Welland the Smith (Metre 10), and the hugely disconcerting image of Death's hunt for Mankind (Metre 27). In this new edition clarity of text, informative notes and a helpful glossary have been a priority, for this is one of the most approachable of Old English verse texts; its relative neglect by specialists will mean this text will come as a new experience to many practised students of the language.
