Book excerpt: Self-assembled monolayers are used in an experimental configuration which allows the extraction of the cross reaction electron exchange rate constant for the electron transfer between a viologen group embedded within the SAM and a metal complex in solution. This cross reaction rate constant is compared with predictions from the Marcus theory using the cross reaction relation and the known self-exchange rate constants for the two reagents. The results reveal that the intrinsic barrier to the electron transfer is relatively unchanged in the SAM, while the rate constant is somewhat depressed due to the long distance over which the electron must transfer, Electrochemistry, Marcus theory, Cross reaction.

Book excerpt: The Republic of Korea's industrial policy has directed that nation's economy through nearly three decades of spectacular growth. But the authors of this paper maintain that this policy is showing signs of being outmoded. The time has come, the authors argue, for the Korean government to stop managing the economy's structural development and to redefine the responsibilities of business and government. Under this proposed compact, the allocation of resources would shift from the government to the private industrial and financial sectors. The transformation of the government bureaucracy from an ad hoc policy role to one of a transparent and predictable regulator is a key to the success of this undertaking. These new directions would present the government with enormous challenges. Greater competitive discipline and regulatory oversight would be required. While dealing with the complexities of the transition, the government would have to maintain macroeconomic stability and the momentum of savings and investment. For comparison, the study examines the industrial economies of France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, which underwent similar shifts.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The kinetics of long-range electron transfer through self-assembled monolayers of n-alkanethiols and n-alkaneselenols (SAMs) was studied via voltammetry of hexaammineruthenium (III) on a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE). Electron tunneling rates across the both monolayer films decay exponentially with thickness with a tunneling coefficient [beta] = 1.1 per CH2. Gradual additions of aliphatic alcohols to the solution result in a decrease of the long-range electron transfer rate, by a maximum of 7-fold, dependent upon the alcohol concentration, but independent of the thickness of the n-alkanethiol monolayer (SAM) and the alcohol's chain length. The mechanism involving competitive adsorption of the alcohol on the SAM surface is proposed to interpret the kinetic data. Electron tunneling rates across n-alkanethiol monolayers are approximately 4-fold larger than the rates measured on n-alkaneselenol monolayers containing the same number of carbon atoms signifying the importance of head-group contact in electron transfer through SAMs.

Book excerpt: A few representative electron-transfer reactions are selected and their kinetic parameters compared with the predictions of activated complex models. Since Taube has presented an elegant treatment of intramolecular electron-transfer reactions, emphasis is on bimolecular reactions. The latter electron-transfer reactions are more complicated to treat theoretically since the geometries of their activated complexes are not as well known as for the intramolecular case. In addition in biomolecular reactions, the work required to bring the two reactants together needs to be calculated. Since both reactants generally carry charges this presents a non-trivial problem at the ionic strengths usually used to study bimolecular electron transfer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph attempts to unify these diverse and exciting new developments within a common framework. First, the physical principles underlying heterogenous electron-transfer processes are outlined in a concise way and are compared to the homogeneous counterpart. This analysis includes the notion of the Fermi level in liquids and solids as well as the distribution of electronic energy levels in solids and liquids. A comparison is made between the salient kinetic features of homogeneous and heterogeneous electron transfer reactions. This establishes the basis for the subsequent treatment of the transduction of excitation energy and photo-initiated electron transfer in organized molecular assemblies, such as micelles, vesicles and monolayers. Transmembrane redox processes are critically reviewed. Particular attention is given to semiconductor electrodes and particles. This includes a discussion of quantum size effects, the nature of space charge layers as well as surface states and the dynamics of charge carrier-induced redox reactions at the semiconductor solution interface. These processes are of fundamental importance in such diverse fields as photochromism, electrochromic displays, electroreprography and photography, information storage, photocatalysis, photodegradation of paints, and solar energy conversion.

Book excerpt: Unimolecular rate constants, K sub et, are reported for the one-electron electroreduction of pentaamminecobalt (III) anchored to mercury, gold, or copper electrodes via various thiophenecarboxylate ligands where the thiophene sulfur acts as the surface binding group and the carboxylate is coordinated to the cobalt reactants. At mercury, the rate parameters were found to be sensitive to the bridging ligand structure, substantially (ca. 10-20 fold) smaller values of K sub et being found for ligands containing one or more methylene groups between the thiophene sulfur and carboxylate oxygen than those featuring uninterrupted bond conjugation between the metal surface donor and Co(III) acceptor sites. Various contributions to these reactivity differences are asse-sed on the basis of the measured variations in the stability constants of the adsorbed precursor state, the rate constants for the homogeneous reduction of these complexes by hexammineruthenium (II), the unimolecular frequency factors obtained from the electrochemical activation parameters, and by comparison with ele-trochemical outer-sphere rate data. Taken together, these results provide strong evidence that the smaller values of K sub et values of the electronic transmission coefficient than are achieved with the conjugated ligands. Comparison is made with analogous results for intramolecular electron transfer via extended organic ligands in homogeneous solution. (Author).

Book excerpt: The electron transfer kinetics of monolayers of CpFeCpCO2(CH2)12SH and CH3(Ch2)11SH co-chemisorbed on gold electrodes have been measured in 2:1 (v:v) chloroethane/butyronitrile solvent at temperatures ranging from 125K to 175K with potential steps and cyclic voltammetry. Rate constants, k deg, measured using cyclic voltammetry range from 3x10(exp-4) to 10(exp-1)/s over these temperatures; an activation plot of logK DEG/K(SUB BETA)T(1/2) vs. 1/T gave Lambda = 0.89 eV for the reorganization energy for the Cp2Fe(+/0) reaction and a pre-factor of 6.5X10(exp 6) eV( -1)/s. The rate constants were obtained by comparison of experimental delta E PEAK values with those of cyclic voltammograms digitally simulated with Marcus-DOS theory. A value of Lambda = 0.76 eV is predicted from dielectric continuum theory. The CpFeCpCO2(CH2)12SH monolayers are kinetically inhomogeneous (disperse) as shown by nonlinear 1nI vs. time plots in potential step experiments. The kinetic dispersity has adverse effects on determinations of Lambda values from cyclic voltammetric waveshapes and from plots of potential step-derived rate constants, k(sub app, tau), against overpotential (eta), producing depressed values for Lambda. jg.
