Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inhibition of Premixed Carbon Monoxide-Hydrogen-Oxygen-Nitrogen Flames by Iron Pentacarbonyl The oxidation mechanism of CO has fewer reactions than those of hydrocarbon fuels, allowing easier isolation of the important inhibition reactions. For this reason, many researchers have used CO flames in studies of halogen inhibition [9 The simplicity of the CO system has additional significance in the present work. In previous studies with methane flames, the rates of key inhibition reactions suggested by Jensen and Jones [17] were increased in order to accurately match the observed burning velocity reductions. It is of interest here to determine if the faster rates are necessary for modeling moist CO flames which are chemically much closer to the rich hz-oz flames used by Jensen and Jones (reactions of iron-containing species with hydrocarbons are not presently included in the mechanism). Finally, carbon monoxide flames are relevant to fire research since CO is a dominant intermediate species in hydrocarbon flames and its oxidation is often the rate-limiting step in product formation. The approach in the present research is to determine the effect of fe(co)'s on the overall reaction rate of premixed flames. The burning velocity of a premixed laminar flame is a relative measure of the overall reaction rate. Since this reaction rate is a fundamental parameter affecting the stabilization and fuel consumption rate of fires, the extent to which it is influenced by the agent is a first measure of the agent' 5 potential as a fire suppressant. Although suppression tests on full-scale fires will be required to assure the effectiveness of any agent, laboratory burners have several important benefits. Their simplicity allows rapid assessment of inhibitor performance in many flame conditions and at various concentrations, and the flames are highly reproducible and stable. Premixed laminar flames can be nearly adiabatic in the laboratory, and are easily modeled with existing computer programs, allowing straightforward interpretation of the effect of the inhibitor. By using detailed chemical kinetic mechanisms together with full transport calculations, the chemical species profiles throughout the flames are calculated. These results provide great insight into both the chemical and physical mechanisms of the inhibitor. Also, in a well-designed laboratory burner, there is little ambiguity about how much agent reaches the flame. Although techniques such as detailed flame structure measurements provide valuable information about the chemical species at each location in the flame for one particular condition, burning velocity and extinction strain rate measurements have the advantage of allowing rapid testing of the effect of the inhibitor over a wider range of conditions. Book excerpt: The Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineer ing (ICASE) and NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) brought together on October 2-4, 1989 experts in the various areas of com bustion with a view to expose them to some combustion problems of technological interest to LaRC and possibly foster interaction with the academic community in these research areas. The top ics chosen for this purpose were flame structure, flame stability, flame holding/extinction, chemical kinetics, turbulence-kinetics in teraction, transition to detonation, and reacting free shear layers. The lead paper set the stage by discussing the status and issues of supersonic combustion relevant to scramjet engine. Then the ex perts were called upon i) to review the current status of knowledge in the aforementioned ;:I. reas, ii) to focus on how this knowledge can be extended and applied to high-speed combustion, and iii) to suggest future directions of research in these areas. Each topic was then dealt with in a position paper followed by formal discussion papers and a general discussion involving the participants. The position papers discussed the state-of-the-art with an emphasis on key issues that needed to be resolved in the near future. The discussion papers crit ically examined these issues and filled in any lacunae therein. The edited versions of the general discussions in the form of questions from the audience and answers from the speakers are included wher ever possible to give the reader the flavor of the lively interactions that took place.

The long range goal is to understand the kinetics governing propellant decomposition, where nitrogen chemistry is important. Hydrogen/nitrous oxide flames are the simplest case of a flame controlled by nitrogen chemistry. A model has been developed for premixed, laminar, one-dimensional hydrogen/nitrous oxide flames. Results have been compared with a range of experimental data. The present model roughly reproduces the data, but inaccuracies still exist. Sensitivity and screening analyses have been used to indicate the additional experimental data needed to improve the model. Keywords: Burning Velocity.

Book excerpt: In general, combustion is a spatially three-dimensional, highly complex physi co-chemical process oftransient nature. Models are therefore needed that sim to such a degree that it becomes amenable plify a given combustion problem to theoretical or numerical analysis but that are not so restrictive as to distort the underlying physics or chemistry. In particular, in view of worldwide efforts to conserve energy and to control pollutant formation, models of combustion chemistry are needed that are sufficiently accurate to allow confident predic tions of flame structures. Reduced kinetic mechanisms, which are the topic of the present book, represent such combustion-chemistry models. Historically combustion chemistry was first described as a global one-step reaction in which fuel and oxidizer react to form a single product. Even when detailed mechanisms ofelementary reactions became available, empirical one step kinetic approximations were needed in order to make problems amenable to theoretical analysis. This situation began to change inthe early 1970s when computing facilities became more powerful and more widely available, thereby facilitating numerical analysis of relatively simple combustion problems, typi cally steady one-dimensional flames, with moderately detailed mechanisms of elementary reactions. However, even on the fastest and most powerful com puters available today, numerical simulations of, say, laminar, steady, three dimensional reacting flows with reasonably detailed and hence realistic ki netic mechanisms of elementary reactions are not possible.

Elementary reactions in these mechanisms control the observable combustion properties such as flame speed, autoignition temperature, ignition delay time, and extinction characteristics in nonpremixed and premixed flame phenomena. First part of thesis deals with computational investigations of influence of carbon monoxide and hydrogen addition on methane flames stabilized in counterflow configuration. Computations were performed employing detailed chemical kinetic mechanism - the San Diego mechanism. In case of nonpremixed flames, effect of carbon monoxide addition on structure and critical condition of extinction were examined. Differences between addition on fuel and oxidizer sides were investigated and plausible explanation given for the differences. For premixed flames, effect of addition of hydrogen and carbon monoxide to reactant mixture was studied. Critical conditions of extinction were predicted using computations for various compositions. Rates of production and consumption of various species were calculated and flame structure was analyzed for nonpremixed and premixed flames. It was found that moderate amount of carbon monoxide addition to methane enhances flame reactivity. However, with large amount of carbon monoxide addition, additive chemistry dominates. Addition of increasing amounts of hydrogen in premixed reactant stream enhances methane flame reactivity. In second part of thesis, kinetic modeling was performed to elucidate the structure and mechanism of extinction and autoignition of nonpremixed toluene flames in counterflow configuration. Computations were performed using detailed chemistry to determine flame structure and to obtain values for critical conditions of extinction and autoignition. Sensitivity analysis of rate parameters, reaction pathway analysis, and spatial reaction rate profiles were used to identify reactions controlling critical conditions of autoignition and extinction. Reactions were classified based on reaction rates and sensitivities of species to rate parameters. Chemical kinetic pathways of toluene consumption leading to formation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide were analyzed. All three analyses were employed to form a skeletal mechanism consisting fewer species and reactions than the original detailed mechanism. Predictions from skeletal mechanism of flame structures and critical conditions of extinction and autoignition were found to agree with those from detailed mechanism.
