Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the kinetic modelling of gas mixtures. It extends the existing literature in mathematics for one species of gas to the case of gas mixtures. This is more realistic in applications. The presented model for gas mixtures is proven to be consistent meaning it satisfies the conservation laws, it admits an entropy and an equilibrium state. Furthermore, we can guarantee the existence, uniqueness and positivity of solutions. Moreover, the model is used for different applications, for example in plasma physics, for fluids with a small deviation from equilibrium and in the case of polyatomic gases.

Book excerpt: A gas inside the microsystems or the porous media is in its non-equilibrium state, due to the fact that the molecular mean free path is comparable to the characteristic dimension of the media. The same state of a gas, called rarefied, is found at high altitude or in the vacuum equipment working at low pressure. All these types of flow can be described by the kinetic models derived from the Boltzmann equation. This thesis presents the development of the numerical tools for the modeling and simulations of the rarefied gas flows. The two models of the full Boltzmann equation, the Shakhov model (S-model) for the single gas and the McCormack model for the gas mixture, are considered. The discrete velocity method is used to the numerical discretization in the molecular velocity space and the TVD-like scheme is implemented in the physical space. The main aspect of this work is centered around the transient properties of the gas flows and, especially, on the transient heat and mass transfer behaviors. However, for some configurations only steady-state solutions are considered and the implicit scheme is developed to reduce the computational cost. Using the proposed numerical approach several types of the transient rarefied single gas flows as well as the binary mixture of the monoatomic gases are studied.

Book excerpt: In the present monograph, we develop the kinetic theory of transport phenomena and relaxation processes in the flows of reacting gas mixtures and discuss its applications to strongly non-equilibrium conditions. The main attention is focused on the influence of non-equilibrium kinetics on gas dynamics and transport properties. Closed systems of fluid dynamic equations are derived from the kinetic equations in different approaches. We consider the most accurate approach taking into account the state-to-state kinetics in a flow, as well as simplified multi-temperature and one-temperature models based on quasi-stationary distributions. Within these approaches, we propose the algorithms for the calculation of the transport coefficients and rate coefficients of chemical reactions and energy exchanges in non-equilibrium flows; the developed techniques are based on the fundamental kinetic theory principles. The theory is applied to the modeling of non-equilibrium flows behind strong shock waves, in the boundary layer, and in nozzles. The comparison of the results obtained within the frame of different approaches is presented, the advantages of the new state-to-state kinetic model are discussed, and the limits of validity for simplified models are established. The book can be interesting for scientists and graduate students working on physical gas dynamics, aerothermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, non-equilibrium physical-chemical kinetics, and kinetic theory of gases.

Book excerpt: In recent years kinetic theory has developed in many areas of the physical sciences and engineering, and has extended the borders of its traditional fields of application. This monograph is a self-contained presentation of such recently developed aspects of kinetic theory, as well as a comprehensive account of the fundamentals of the theory. Emphasizing modeling techniques and numerical methods, the book provides a unified treatment of kinetic equations not found in more focused works. Specific applications presented include plasma kinetic models, traffic flow models, granular media models, and coagulation-fragmentation problems. The work may be used for self-study, as a reference text, or in graduate-level courses in kinetic theory and its applications.

Book excerpt: For two gas species with a temperature difference and a bulk velocity difference neither of which is necessarily small in magnitude, the kinetic theory of gases has been used to derive explicit expressions for the collision frequency, diffusive drag force, molecular translational energy transfer rate, and the bimolecular chemical reaction frequency. The derivations, which are based upon hypothesized mutual collision diameters, activation energies, and steric factors, are of interest in connection with theoretical studies of low-pressure gas mixtures with large departures from equilibrium. A binary temperature concept is introduced as an aid in condensing and interpreting the expressions derived from the kinetic theory The expression derived for the diffusive drag force is used to give a more definite form to the equations of motion of the individual species in a mixture of several interdiffusing gases.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moment Description of Gas Mixtures-I The object of this note is to supply certain results derived from kinetic theory concerning the macroscopic description of mixture of gases. The description proposed is special in that it is entirely based on the microscopic description of the mixture via Boltzmann's Equation coupled to the Maxwell's Equa tions. Yet it is sufficiently broad to include various theories at present in use as limiting cases. Some of these will be discussed in subsequent notes.
