Book excerpt: From one of Canada’s most inspiring and gifted sports heroes, an urgently needed guide to getting our kids active and healthy. Like many of us, Silken Laumann’s fondest childhood memories are of play: staying outside until that final call for dinner, neighbourhood-wide games of Capture-the-Flag and road hockey that went on for hours. But as a parent, Silken knows the world has changed. We are afraid to let our children out of sight, our streets don’t feel safe, neighbours don’t know and rely on each other like they used to. While we recognize the need for our kids to be active, our fears, along with our busy lives and the enormous societal pressure to (simultaneously) make athletes, academics, and artists out of our children, have led us to schedule their every activity, driving them to and from soccer practice, piano lessons, tutorials. We have forgotten just how important unstructured play is for our children’s development and well-being: It keeps kids healthy, creative and active; it teaches them valuable life skills and, most importantly, it lets our kids be kids, worry-free, unfettered. Child’s Play is a call for action, a guide to reconnecting with our kids, and a blueprint for building safe, supportive communities and healthy schools. Above all, it’s a book of simple ideas for parents desperate for change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a cardiologist and a nutritionist, a holistic plan for healthy aging and wellness rooted in the ancestral eating habits of hunter gatherers. “The Forever Young program is the scientifically based plan that will bring your life back into synch with your genetic identity, restoring your youthful vigor and glow, while at the same time optimizing your health, quality of life, and longevity.” —James O'Keefe, MD and Joan O'Keefe, RD In a field plagued by “miracle” diets and sketchy information, The Forever Young Diet and Lifestyle presents a commonsense plan that improves satiety; promotes wholesome, fresh, and easily obtained foods; and reinforces a rational, holistic, mind-body approach to diet and lifestyle. The program is a complete package that can help provide a lifetime of energy and good health. Most of our health problems today result from a mismatch between the world we are designed for and the very different one in which we live. The modern American leading a sedentary lifestyle of automobiles, couches, televisions, computers, and junk food is like a fish out of water. Our genes have changed minimally over the past few thousand years, yet our diets and lifestyles have become progressively more divergent from those of our ancient ancestors. The Forever Young Diet and Lifestyle outlines the path back to our natural needs and rhythms. Firmly grounded in the medically proven Hunter-Gatherer diet, the plan easily promotes weight loss, vastly improves energy levels, enhances sleep and concentration, and restores the natural youthful glow we should have at any age. Cardiologist James O'Keefe and his wife, Joan, a registered dietitian, provide a down-to-earth, sensible program that's satisfying and easy to follow.

This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: Author Matt Carmichael has been tracking demographic shifts for years, and provides a data-rich look at the changing American consumer. This book follows ten families in ten representative counties to examine their lives and how the decisions they make impact consumer behavior. This is not just a data book, because in the end each of those numbers—in datasets big and small—is a person. As you read those stories, the trends come to life and give you a greater understanding of how to reach your target—whether it’s a baby boomer farmer in Teton, Montana or a set of working parents in one of the most affluent counties in the US. Carmichael focuses on the top ten trends that are reshaping the consumer landscape and impacting buying behavior and the economic outlook of the world’s most important market. For each trend he provides ethnographic research from the families, stats from the leading consumer data sources, and exclusive interviews and examples from marketers, agencies, and media executives. These trends show how America is aging, growing more diverse ethnically, and becoming more polarized economically. Buyographics is a smart, engaging read that will be important for every marketer to consider before creating a successful campaign.
