Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I can do no better than reproduce the introduction I have written for my 9th Joke Book. It says all I want to say about my being an inveterate Joker. "I was 94 when Joke Book 8 was published I was sure that it would be the last of the series. I was on a diet of pills and in poor health. But here I am 97 years old and here is Joke Book 9 (Orient Paperbacks). Laughter is evidently the elixir of life, the best tonic in the world to ensure a long and happy life. Laughter is not only the best tonic but humorous writing and relating other people's jokes is very lucrative, as both my publishers and I have found. Everyone of the earlier books in the series has gone into more than a dozen reprints. They are to be seen on pavement, railway station and airport bookstalls. But not everyone enjoys jokes, especially when they are the target. This is especially true of politicians who have notoriously thin skins. We have had quite a few very good cartoonists - Shankar Pillai, R.K. Laxman, Vijayan, Rajinder Puri, Mario Miranda. Their cartoons have enlivened our newspapers and magazines and brought a smile on our faces. But many politicians and political parties take themselves very seriously and consider far too many topics as sacred cows not to be laughed about. They take umbrage at being the butt of jokes. Laughter for them is no laughing matter. They serve who poke fun at them with legal notices - or worse. I cannot take credit for the jokes appearing in the book. A large number were sent to me by readers who have been acknowledged by their names. Some I made up or moulded from jokes I picked up from friends, books and magazines. At the end of the day, more than my other work as a novelist, short story writer, historian of the Sikhs or translator, I am known for my joke books. At every gathering, I am implored, 'Kkoi joke-shoke ho jai' — let there be a joke or two. I am known as a Joker." — Khushwant Singh, Hindustan Times

Another super collection of naughty and not-so-naughty jokes, humorous anecdotes, comic interludes, hilarious situations and bitchy remarks, selected by Khushwant Singh from amongst the thousands contributed by his readers and fans — and some manufactured by him. All dedicated to getting the humorless Indians to smile and to laugh. His earlier collection of jokes, Khushwant Singh’s Joke Book and Khushwant Singh’ s Joke Book II nave both been runaway bestsellers having sold over 80,000 copies, a rare phenomenon in Indian publishing. They were widely hailed for “poking fun at Indians and lampooning politicians.” One reviewer paid a rich compliment by describing the books as “designed with malice towards one and all and to give the reader a pain in the belly.”

'Khushwant Singh' In Khushwant Singh's Book of Unforgettable Women, India's most widely-read and irreverent author and columnist profiles some of many women in his life. From Ghayoorunnisa Hafeez, the girl who forever changed his attitude towards Muslims, to his wife, Kaval Malik, who is allergic to media publicity; from his old grandmother to the controversial artist Amrita Shergil; from Mother Teresa to Phoolan Devi, Khushwant Singh paints colourful and true-to-life portraits of the women he has known, loved, despised, admired, and lived with. The book also includes some of the women Khushwant Singh has conjured up in the numerous stories and novels he has written over sixty years. The lively Martha Stack (-Black Jasmine'), Lady Mohan Lal (-Karma'), Jean Memsahib (-The Memsahib of Mandla'), the hijra-whore Bhagmati (Delhi), the insatiable Champak (I Shall Not Hear The Nightingale), dark-eyed Nooran (Train to Pakistan) and the free-spirited Molly Gomes (The Company of Women) are only a few of Khushwant Singh's larger-than-life characters who are sure to entertain and amuse the reader.

Book excerpt: Malice. The word is synonymous with Khushwant Singh; his pen has spared no one. For over four decades as India’s most widely-read columnist, he has commented on just about everything: religion, politics, our future, our past, prohibition, impotency, presidents, politicians, cricket, dog-haters, astrologers, the banning of books, the secret of 1ongevity...the list is endless. Candid to the point of being outrageous, Khushwant Singh makes both his reader and subject wince. He writes unabashedly on nose picking, wife-bashing, bribing journalists, gender wars and the desires of an octogenarian; on Nehru and Edwina, Laloo, Bal Thackeray, Chandraswami and Sonia Gandhi, among host of others. Khushwant Singh’s Big Book of Malice brings together some of his nastiest and most irreverent pieces. Witty, sharp and brutally honest, this collection is certain to delight and provoke readers of all ages. ‘Good people can be crashing bores. Evil men who combine evil-doing with drunkenness, debauchery and making illicit money make more interesting characters because they pack their lives with action. They do what most of us would like to do but do not have the guts to.’ —Khushwant Singh

We are such funny people but are not able to see our funny sides. So how do we explain the success of this series of joke books? Or the popularity of professional jokers like Tanali Raman, Birbal and Gopal Bhore of older times along with Navjot Sidhu, Jaspal Bhatti and saas-bahu serials in our print and electronic media? Why do laughter clubs flourish in our towns and cities? The answer is simple: people know that laughter is the elixir of life. The best tonic to ensure good and happy life. So have lots of laughter with Joke Book 8!' — Khushwant Singh

Book excerpt: If there’s anyone who’s been around, seen it all and lived life to the hilt, it has to be Khushwant Singh. India’s most popular and prolific writer has, over the years, enlightened and outraged in equal measure, and enriched our lives with his humour, his honesty and his sharp insights and observations. In Khushwantnama, the 98-year-old reflects on a life lived fully and the lessons it has taught him. Here is his distilled wisdom on subjects as diverse as old age and the fear of death; on the joy of sex, the pleasures of poetry and the importance of laughter; on how to cope with retirement and live a long, happy and healthy life. Here, too, are his reflections on politics, politicians and the future of India; on what it takes to be a writer; and on what religion means to him.

Book excerpt: Meet the members of the Sunset Club: Pandit Preetam Sharma, Nawab Barkatullah Baig and Sardar Boota Singh. Friends for over forty years, they are now in their eighties. And every evening, at the sunset hour, they sit together on a bench in Lodhi Gardens to exchange news and views on the events of the day, talking about everything from love, lust, sex and scandal to religion and politics. As he follows a year in the lives of the three men from January 26 2009 to January 26 2010. Khushwant Singh brings his characters vibrantly to life, with his piquant portrayals of their fantasies and foibles, his unerring ear for dialogue and his genius for capturing the flavour and texture of everyday life in their households. Interwoven with this compelling human story is another chronicle of a year in the life of India, as the country goes through the cycle of seasons, the tumult of general elections, violence, natural disasters and corruption in high places. In turn ribald and lyrical, poignant and profound, The Sunset Club is a deeply moving exploration of friendship, sexuality, old age and infirmity; a joyous celebration of nature; an insightful portrait of India's paradoxes and complexities. A masterpiece from one of India's most-loved storytellers, The Sunset Club will have you in tears and laughter, and grip you from the first page to the last
