Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software development projects are complex. Coupled with technical factors, anomalies that are environment-contingent often influence such projects. Human capital, being a vital resource for project delivery, undoubtedly plays a critical role in software development projects but studies that ascertain the extent to which technicalities and conventional factors, like human resource, influence development are limited. This is in light of the recent emergence of development methodological frameworks that act as nomenclatures, which aim to eliminate development ambiguities. After the emergence of such a centralized approach to software development management, process iteration practices, such as Agile, which downplay the formality of central methods approach have complicated the processes and this has resulted in an ideological stand-off between the management and the development 'classes' of a standard software development project. While a standard model helps benchmark and standardize process tasks for predictable outcomes, it may equally be lengthy and slow in a development environment that is often highly dynamic and rapid. Likewise, without rapidity, software projects risk potential project losses. To understand this process, a study involving 56 professional software development professionals was conducted in August 2011. It was ascertained that complexities and the primary indicators of project success forms can differ based on the respondent's project role; likewise, the study also confirmed the factors that influence software project success.

Book excerpt: Martin Wiener develops a model that comprises 29 critical success factors which are classified into four distinct groups: internal suitability, internal management, external suitability, and external management factors. He shows that the external management factors are particularly relevant for the successful implementation of an offshore software development project and that the perception of the individual critical success factors greatly depends on the company perspective.

Book excerpt: Delivering successful projects means the ability to produce high quality software within budget and on time-consistently, but when one mentions quality to software engineers or project managers, they talk about how impossible it is to eliminate defects from software. This assumption is passed on and on until it becomes accepted wisdom, with the power of a self-fulfilling prophecy. And when a project fails to arrive on time or up to standards, team members will turn on each other. The project got delayed because the engineers did a poor job in development or too much was promised upfront for this short of a timeline. In Delivering Successful Projects with TSPSM and Six Sigma: A Practical Guide to Implementing Team Software ProcessSM, you will learn how to effectively manage the development of a software project and deliver it in line with customer expectations. This refreshing volume - Offers real-world case studies about the author's experience at Microsoft successfully implementing TSP to achieve higher quality software Empowers software developers to take responsibility for project management Explains how Six Sigma and TSP combined can dramatically reduce software defects By applying these principles put forth by one of the most respected names in software development, your software team will learn how to function as a team and turn out products where zero defects and on-time delivery are the norm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An empirically based study of why software development failures happen, and the lessons we can learn. Failed or abandoned software development projects cost the U.S. economy alone billions of dollars a year. In Software Development Failures, Kweku Ewusi-Mensah offers an empirically grounded study that suggests why these failures happen and how they can be avoided. Case studies analyzed include the well-known Confirm travel industry reservation program, FoxMeyer's Delta, the IRS's Tax System Modernization, the Denver International Airport's Baggage Handling System, and CODIS. It has been estimated that one-third of software development projects fail or are abandoned outright because of cost overruns, delays, and reduced functionality. Some consider this an acceptable risk—that it is simply the cost of doing business. Ewusi-Mensah argues that understanding the factors involved in development failures will help developers and businesses bring down the rate of software failure and abandoned projects. Ewusi-Mensah explores the reasons software development projects are vulnerable to failure and why issues of management and organization are at the core of any failed project. He examines these projects not from a deterministically technical perspective but as part of a complex technical and social process; he proposes a framework of factors that contribute to the decision to abandon a project and enumerates the risks and uncertainties inherent in each phase of a project's life cycle. Exploring the multiplicity of factors that make software development risky, he presents empirical data that is reinforced by analyses of the reported cases. He emphasizes the role of the user in the development process and considers the effect of organizational politics on a project. Finally, he considers what lessons can be learned from past failures and how software development practices can be improved.

Book excerpt: Agile software engineering methods have recently emerged as a new and better way of developing software as compared to the traditional methodologies. This book explores and determines the critical success factors of Agile software development projects using quantitative approach. The book compiled success and failure factors of Agile projects identified in the existing literature into a preliminary list of potential critical success factors. A survey was conducted among Agile professionals, gathering empirical data from 109 Agile projects from 25 countries across the world. The results revealed that only 10 out of 48 hypotheses were supported, identifying three critical success factors for Agile software development projects. The book should provide researchers and practitioners with insight on the comparative values of success factors, and might be helpful to those managers and professionals considering joining the Agile bandwagon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EVOLVING SOFTWARE PROCESSES The book provides basic building blocks of evolution in software processes, such as DevOps, scaling agile process in GSD, in order to lay a solid foundation for successful and sustainable future processes. One might argue that there are already many books that include descriptions of software processes. The answer is “yes, but.” Becoming acquainted with existing software processes is not enough. It is tremendously important to understand the evolution and advancement in software processes so that developers appropriately address the problems, applications, and environments to which they are applied. Providing basic knowledge for these important tasks is the main goal of this book. Industry is in search of software process management capabilities. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic emphasizes the industry’s need for software-specific process management capabilities. Most of today’s products and services are based to a significant degree on software and are the results of largescale development programs. The success of such programs heavily depends on process management capabilities, because they typically require the coordination of hundreds or thousands of developers across different disciplines. Additionally, software and system development are usually distributed across geographical, cultural and temporal boundaries, which make the process management activities more challenging in the current pandemic situation. This book presents an extremely comprehensive overview of the evolution in software processes and provides a platform for practitioners, researchers and students to discuss the studies used for managing aspects of the software process, including managerial, organizational, economic and technical. It provides an opportunity to present empirical evidence, as well as proposes new techniques, tools, frameworks and approaches to maximize the significance of software process management. Audience The book will be used by practitioners, researchers, software engineers, and those in software process management, DevOps, agile and global software development.
