Book excerpt: The Epidermis documents the proceedings of a symposium that explored in detail the fundamental aspects of the epidermis and the still poorly understood process of keratinization. The Division of Dermatology, University Extension and the School of Medicine of the University of California at Los Angeles agreed to sponsor the conference and offered the University's Residential Conference Center at Lake Arrowhead for the meeting place. This volume is a source book of basic dermatologic thought and information. More than a book of dermatology, this volume makes a singular contribution to our knowledge of keratinization. The volume contains 37 papers and opens with an introductory chapter on keratinization, focusing on the history of the keratohyalin granules, the role of lipids in the orderly keratinization of the epidermis, and the desquamation process. Subsequent chapters present studies on topics such as the behavior of the skin; the effects of various experimental conditions on keratinization in organ culture; and the localization and the regional variability in the concentration epidermal enzymes.

Book excerpt: Reproduction: Molecular, Subcellular, and Cellular is a collection of papers presented at the Twenty-Fourth Symposium of The Society for Developmental Biology, held at Carleton, Minnesota in June 1965. The papers in the compendium focus on the clarification and definition of specific aspects of reproduction at different levels of biological organization. Topics discussed include the transcription and translation of genes; interactions between plant viruses and host cells; chromosome reproduction in mitosis and meiosis; cell and tissue interactions in the reproduction of cell type; and aging as a consequence of growth cessation. Biologists, microbiologists, and cytologists will find the book insightful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Structure and Function of Skin, Third Edition is devoted to all matters pertaining to the structure and function of the skin. Drawing upon the accumulated data derived from embryology, histology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology, this book presents an overview of skin, with emphasis on human skin. Topics range from the biological functions of the dermis to the histochemical and microchemical properties of the epidermis; the effects of protein deficiency on hair growth; cutaneous innervation; nail regeneration and growth; sebaceous glands; and eccrine sweat glands. This book is organized into 12 chapters and begins with an overview of the structure and function of skin, and then discusses the epidermis and its structural features. Special consideration is given to the life cycle of epidermal cells; the properties and function of stratum corneum; and other cells in the epidermis including melanocytes, the cells of Langerhans, and Merkel cells. The chapters that follow focus on age-related changes in the dermis, cutaneous blood flow, changes in skin circulation, and the dermal nerve network. The book also considers hair growth and differentiation; the effects of malnutrition on the morphology of hair roots; and the structure and development of the nails. A chapter describing the cytochemistry and pharmacology of eccrine sweat glands concludes the book. This book is written primarily for dermatologists, whether seasoned veterans or neophytes, and will also be useful to all biologists who are interested in biomedical disciplines.

Book excerpt: Isozymes, IV: Genetics and Evolution contains manuscripts presented at the Third International Conference on isozymes convened in April 1974 at Yale University. Separating 58 manuscripts into chapters, this book begins by elucidating the usefulness of isozymes as effective markers in studies of various aspects of genetics and evolution. Specific discussions are given to isozymes in evolutionary systematics and isozyme polymorphism maintenance mechanisms viewed from the standpoint of population genetics. This book explains multiple allelism and isozyme diversity in human populations. It also addresses the usefulness of isozyme variants as markers of population movement in man and plant population genetics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mention the words 'arthropod cuticle' to most biologists and they usually provoke a glazed expression. This is because the cuticle is commonly regarded as an inert substance. It is hoped that this book will dispel this fallacy. The study of cuticle in its proper context now involves many of the wider aspects of biology which are currently in vogue (e. g. how a hormone like ecdyson induces a specific enzyme like dopa decarboxylase; the unsolved major problem of cell gradient and polarity; the involvement of cyclic AMP in hormonal mechanisms; the extra cellular control of cuticular enzymes, of the mechanical proper ties of cuticle structural proteins, and of the orientation of fibrous molecules; and the relation of chromosome puffing to the synthesis of specific proteins). Studies on cuticle demand a variety of techniques, and examples of the following are illustrated in this book (fluorescence, phase contrast, polariza tion and Nomarski interference microscopy; infrared absorp tion; transmission and scanning electron microscopy; autora diography analyzed by electron microscopy; negative staining in the electron microscope; optical diffraction, high angle X-ray diffraction, low angle X -ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction). I am well aware that the biophysical parts of this book are less incomplete than other aspects. A developmental biologist or a biochemist would have further elaborated other parts ofthe subject matter. Only one previous author, RICHARDS (1951)hasdevoted a book to arthropod cuticle.

Book excerpt: Recent Progress in Surface Science, Volume 1 reviews significant advances made in surface science during the period 1956-1961, as well as problems that are still unsolved. Topics covered range from surface viscosity and electrode processes to corrosion of metals, surface-active substances, and foams and free liquid films. The electrical double layer and electrokinetic phenomena are also examined, along with facilitated diffusion and the chemistry of the semiconductor surface. Comprised of 11 chapters, this volume first deals with surface viscosity and general principles and applications of surface rheology, as well as the viscosity of various types of monolayers. The reader is then introduced to foams and free liquid films, with emphasis on the theory of foaming; the electrical double layer and electrokinetic phenomena; and electrode processes. Subsequent chapters explore the corrosion of metals; surface-active substances; surface chemistry of compound and organic semiconductors; and the mechanism of facilitated diffusion. The book also considers the morphology and dynamic aspects of cell contacts before concluding with an analysis of the formation and properties of bimolecular lipid membranes. This book will be of interest to chemists and physicists.
