Book excerpt: In terms of population the city of Green Bay is barely a blip on the map compared to sports markets like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, Detroit, Dallas and Indianapolis. Even Jacksonville, Florida—home of the hapless Jaguars—has a population eight times greater than Green Bay. So how do you explain 70,000-plus fans at Lambeau Field for every Packers home game? It's pretty simple. This "blip on the map" city has an address that rivals Times Square. Welcome to Titletown, USA. The Packers own more championships than any other team in professional football. The franchise claims legendary names like Lambeau, Lombardi and Nitschke as its own. Green Bay might be home to mere thousands, but there are millions more who live and breathe in the realm of cheesehead fandom. Green and gold merchandise annually ranks among the NFL's best selling. Want to buy season tickets to Lambeau? Good luck. There are more people on the waiting list than there are people living in Green Bay. This is a franchise steeped in tradition and rich in history—and all of it can be found within these pages: the great players, from Johnny Blood to Clay Matthews, Bart Starr to Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers, every title game, and the greatest moments, from the Ice Bowl to Super Bowl XXXI. Think you know Packers history? Think again. With stories from every era in team history and 350 brand new trivia questions, there's something here for every cheesehead—so test your skills, wrack your brain, it's your Green Bay Packers IQ, the ultimate test of true fandom.

Book excerpt: Intermediate Statistical Investigations provides a unified framework for explaining variation across study designs and variable types, helping students increase their statistical literacy and appreciate the indispensable role of statistics in scientific research. Requiring only a single introductory statistics course as a prerequisite, the program uses the immersive, simulation-based inference approach for which the author team is known.Students engage with various aspects of data collection and analysis using real examples and clear explanations designed to strengthen multivariable understanding and reinforce first-course concepts. Each chapter contains in-depth exercises which follow a consistent six-step statistical exploration and investigation method (ask a research question, design a study, explore the data, draw inferences, formulate conclusions, and look back and ahead) enabling students to assess a variety of concepts in a single assignment. Challenging questions based on research articles strengthen critical reading skills, fully worked examples demonstrate essential concepts and methods, and engaging visualizations illustrate key themes of explained variation. End-of-chapter investigations use real data from popular culture and published research studies in a variety of disciplines, exposing students to various applications of statistics in the real world. Throughout the text, user-friendly Rossman Chance web applets allow students to conduct the simulations and analyses covered in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My initial purpose in writing this book was to offer readers an update of my book Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects (Plenum, 1984), which con tained a broad overview of the history (actually the absence of any history) ofthe awareness of alcohol's teratogenic potential; a review of alcohol's pharmacology, especially with respect to pregnancy; a survey of the physical and behavioral effects of prenatal alcohol exposure; and an overview of the mechanisms sus pected of being responsible for those effects. I have omitted most of the previously examined historical and pharmacologi cal information because not much of what was previously discussed needed revision. On the other hand, because much more has been learned about the consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure and its potential mechanisms of action, I have considerably expanded my discussion of these topics. In doing so, I have attempted to include as much new material as possible without (I hope) being overly pedantic and thereby losing the proverbial forest for the trees. No book is ever entirely neutral in the topics it discusses, the issues it raises, or in its conclusions. In sifting through hundreds and oftentimes thousands of articles, writers have to choose which facts to emphasize and which to ignore. Every idea cannot be chronicled and every article cannot (and should not) be cited. In going about the business of picking and choosing, however, a writer has an obligation to present the arguments for and against a particular conclusion.
