Book excerpt: Jane Austen completed "Persuasion" in August 1816. It was to be her last book. She left us with the story of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth and she left them approaching "happily ever after." What happens the day following "happily ever after?" The story of Kellynch picks up three years after the couple married and were able to secure the Kellynch estate from Sir Walter and Cousin William Elliot agreed to waive the entailment. It would seem all is well with the young couple, but all is not as it seems. Kellynch is a story of deceit and treachery as well as courage and overcoming the odds. It is a story in which those who were assumed to be friends are not and where support comes from unexpected places. Love again, will, be tested in a story set against the backdrop of historical events. Throughout the book, I have remained true to the characters as Miss Austen created them. I sought to develop and introduce new characters that would meet with her approval.

Book Synopsis Approaches to Teaching Austen's Persuasion by : Marcia McClintock Folsom
Download or read book Approaches to Teaching Austen's Persuasion written by Marcia McClintock Folsom and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2021-04-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen is a favorite with many students, whether they've read her novels or viewed popular film adaptations. But Persuasion, completed at the end of her life, can be challenging for students to approach. They are surprised to meet a heroine so subdued and self-sacrificing, and the novel's setting during the Napoleonic wars may be unfamiliar. This volume provides teachers with avenues to explore the depths and richness of the novel with both Austen fans and newcomers. Part 1, "Materials," suggests editions for classroom use, criticism, and multimedia resources. Part 2, "Approaches," presents strategies for teaching the literary, contextual, and philosophical dimensions of the novel. Essays address topics such as free indirect discourse and other narrative techniques; social class in Austen's England; the role of the navy during war and peacetime; key locations in the novel, including Lyme Regis and Bath; and health, illness, and the ethics of care.

And ever since, she’s regretted her decision, wondering every day if she’s given up her only chance for real happiness. After Anna shattered his heart, Dr. Rick Wentworth moved on—and away—to Australia, where his work in marine conservation garnered international fame and respect. Then their shared memories intrude—and the love they once had seems ready to awaken once again. But with Anna’s image-obsessed family always ready to interfere, and Rick poised to ditch the limelight and return to Australia, she’s not sure she can persuade him to risk his heart again for her, in this delightful novel by the author of The Importance of Being Emma.

Download or read book Persuadable written by Katherine Woodbury and published by Peaks Island Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen's Persuasion has the reader rooting for the protagonists to rekindle their estranged affections. But what of the novel's nemeses? In the end, the wily and impious Mr. Elliot casts aside his carefully groomed reputation and persuades the infamous Mrs. Clay to become his mistress. But every persuader needs a persuadable partner, and Mrs. Clay is no ingénue; she'd send a Willoughby or a Wickham packing. Though no less calculating than those romantic villains, Penelope Clay and William Elliot discover in each other the kind of kindred spirits they fail to find among the titled Elliots. While highlighting and transfiguring classic scenes from the novel, this unconventional new version provides a romantic pairing on a par with that of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth. In the process, Persuadable illustrates an eternal Austen truth: love is wholly individual, no matter the age or time-period. Who says a couple of shameless gold diggers can't find true love?
