Book excerpt: Kelley has lived successfully for 39 years with a rare disease called Mucolipidosis III. It has affected all of her bones and joints, her trachea and bronchial tubes. Despite many surgical procedures, she has been a positive power of example to many. For such a young person, she has an incredible emotional strength. She and her family have a positive attitude toward her disability. When Kelley lacks motivation in school, it may well be that she is not feeling well, but is not making a fuss about it. She tunes in easily to other people, and is sensitive to their feelings and problems. Kelley is a concrete learner and has sound common sense. Although she has earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, her medical condition is so unpredictable that she is unable to work at a full time job. Despite an uncertain future, Kelley is an inspiration, consistently displaying a remarkable attitude while maintaining a strong faith in God; causing many people who know her to say, 'Kelley is my Hero!'

Book excerpt: What if everything you've ever loved, ever known, ever believed to be true...just disappeared? Annie Beyers has everything--a beautiful house, a loving husband, and an adorable daughter. It's a day like any other when she takes Hannah to the pediatrician...until she wakes hours later from a car accident. When she asks for her daughter, confused doctors tell Annie that Hannah never existed. In fact, nothing after waking from the crash is the same as Annie remembers. Five happy years of her life apparently never happened. Annie's marriage is coming to an end. Now a successful artist living in Manhattan, she's no longer home in their beloved upstate farmhouse. Her long-estranged sister is more like a best friend, and her recently deceased dog is alive and well. With each passing day, Annie's remembered past and unfamiliar present begin to blur. Haunted by visions of Hannah, and with knowledge of things she can't explain, Annie wonders...is everyone lying to her? The search for answers leads Annie down an illuminating path far from home, to reconcile the memories with reality and to discover the truth about the life she's living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is school district master planning? This book explains how this planning is done, using a proven process, not theories. The process helps you avoid cost overruns, public outrage, repeated redistricting, and classrooms built in wrong places that all represent poor planning. Planning tools, steps and process check lists are discussed in rich detail, using actual case studies and the planning triangle of programs, demographics and facilities. Process roles are explained for district staff, consultants, and the public at each step. Steps are clearly explained for acquiring, analyzing, and applying critical data to drive planning to redistrict, build, close, renovate or expand schools. Steps are carefully explained for developing the comprehensive masterplan and getting it implemented on time and within budget. This book pulls no punches as to what usually goes wrong and why, along with what must be done, step by step, to avoid such mistakes. It is a guide to developing a district master plan that will work out for the long term and promote public support for public education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Program evaluation is not among the most popular of exercises, since it carries risks for all associated with it. Because every important program has friends and enemies anxious for its prosperity or demise, the investigators and their findings will normally be attacked from at least one side and not infrequently from both. But this is an occupational hazard, dutifully accepted by its practitioners; for some it even adds a zestful touch of danger. However, the program's sponsors and its participants require an unusual degree of courage, since negative or indifferent results are not infrequently used to impugn their wisdom or dedication. We applaud the courage of all those who, in the interest of improving policies and programs to further their clients' well-being, assumed the risks of introducing scientific program evaluation: Primary credit goes to the sponsor of the current research, the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), in particular the Mediterranean and Middle East Branch and its chief, Roushdi El Henedi. Special thanks go to Dr. Habib Siddiqui for his stimulus in launching the study. His efforts were followed by those of M.A. Abu-Nuwar, whose bureaucratic and diplomatic skills were much appreciated, and Sylvia Rhodes, who was of assistance near the close of the project. UNFPA staff in Egypt, in particular Hamed Fahmy, were most helpful in the field. Needless to say, neither these individuals nor the UNFPA necessarily agree with the conclusions reached in this book.

Book excerpt: Arguing that planning in practice is far more complicated than historians usually depict, the authors examine closely the everyday social, political, economic, ideological, bureaucratic, and environmental contexts in which planning has occurred. In so doing, they redefine the nature of planning practice, expanding the range of actors and actions that we understand to have shaped urban development.

Book excerpt: Sustainable water resources planning deals with the interface of water resources science and the needs of human populations. It highlights works that addresses practical methods and basic research in, for example: quantity and quality management of groundwater and surface water resources; sustainability of water resources and water availability; water use and reuse including managed aquifer recharge and storage; geopolitical and socio-economic aspects of water resource management; water development and human activity impacts on ecological systems and human health, including, for instance, agricultural and climatic impacts, subsurface waste storage and injection, geothermal energy development and subsurface energy storage. This book provides up-to-date systematic and scientific analyses of such water problems and suggests sustainable measures to overcome them through effective surface and sub-surface water resource management. It is immensely valuable to students, researchers, water resource managers, hydrologists and all those who are engaged or interested in any aspect of river water conservation and management of water resources.

Book excerpt: Kelleys Island 1810-1861 - The courageous, poignant & often quirky lives of island pioneers - By Leslie Korenko This is the first in a series of history books about Kelleys Island Ohio. The book is a comprehensive, richly detailed, and surprisingly entertaining history of Kelleys Island, a small remote island in Lake Erie. Its history is told by the islanders, in their own words, gently blended with narrative text. You can read correspondence and letters to newspapers, as well as articles found in an incredible handwritten newspaper-The Islander. The island is now a resort, but 175 years ago it was the wilderness. There are stories of the early squatters who occupied this wild, unsettled and remote part of Ohio as well as first-hand accounts of the building of the Johnson's Island prison and a visit to the soldiers of the 38th Ohio stationed at Somerset Tennessee during the early days of the Civil War. Covering the period 1810-1861 over 160 illustrations.
