Book excerpt: Ex-Cop turned Private Investigator Robert Hoskins always enjoyed the stories his grandmother told him as a child, stories of the Dryad that lived in the tree, the Faeries in the garden, and the magical world that was created in his imagination. He always enjoyed them; he just never thought that they were true. Robert's childhood world of magic becomes real when a chance encounter with a local casino mob boss introduces him to the world he was born into, the world that was hidden from him, the world of the Fae. But he's not easily convinced. From disbelief to acceptance, Robert encounters a variety of mythical beings. From Faeries and Norse legends to the Oracle at Delphi, from Mermaids to Werewolves to everything in between, Robert's world has definitely changed. While his path through that world appears chosen he soon learns that the beings that reside in the world of his grandmother's stories aren't that much different than those of the mortal world. Good and evil still battle one another and it's time to take sides. What should Robert do when the world around him stops making sense? When he has to find out from a Dwarf that his dog is descended from Fae hunting dogs. When he knows that corporations and even the mob don't run Vegas, it's the Fae. When the prettiest girls he meets are over 3,000 years old and some of them drink blood. And that stripper, is she really a Faery? Let's not even go there. What should Robert do when he learns that strength in his new world is measured in magic, and he doesn't have a clue how to wield it?Do Demons, Gods, Elves, and Faeries really exist? Are Vampires truly the children of Lilith? Robert didn't believe it at first either.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller people can believe in—by "a pioneer of the new urban Christians" (Christianity Today) and the "C.S. Lewis for the 21st century" (Newsweek). Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics, and even ardent believers, have about religion. Using literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and potent reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.

Book excerpt: The Resurrection accounts of Jesus in the Gospels are the most dramatic and impactful stories ever told. One similarity unites each testimony--that none of his most loyal and steadfast followers could "see" it was him, back from the dead. The reason for this is at the very foundation of the Christian faith. She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. (John 20:14) Hope in the Time of Fear is a book that unlocks the meaning of Jesus's resurrection for readers. Easter is considered the most solemn and important holiday for Christians. It is a time of spiritual rebirth and a time of celebrating the physical rebirth of Jesus after three days in the tomb. For his devoted followers, nothing could prepare them for the moment they met the resurrected Jesus. Each failed to recognize him. All of them physically saw him and yet did not spiritually truly see him. It was only when Jesus reached out and invited them to see who he truly was that their eyes were open. Here the central message of the Christian faith is revealed in a way only Timothy Keller could do it--filled with unshakable belief, piercing insight, and a profound new way to look at a story you think you know. After reading this book, the true meaning of Easter will no longer be unseen.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet Timothy Keller explores how people are changed by meeting Jesus personally—and how we can be changed encountering him today. The people who met Jesus Christ in person faced the same big life questions we face today. Like most of us, the answers handed down to them didn’t seem to work in the real world. But when they met Jesus, things immediately started to change for them. It seems he not only had the answers—he was the answer. In Encounters with Jesus, Timothy Keller shows how the central events and meetings in Jesus’ life can change our own lives forever. "Keller's work belongs on the bookshelf of every serious Bible student." —Examiner "Keller has mined the gold from these texts of Scripture, and any Christian is bound to have their minds expanded and hearts stirred." —Grace for Sinners

Book excerpt: Keller's Turn: a Novel concerns the life of Frank Keller, biotech billionaire, husband, avid sailor, runner, and bow hunter who, at fifty-three, sees his life come to bits in the days preceding Christmas. On a Friday night, the first night of the long holiday weekend, his wife of three decades decides to leave him (decamping for their Aspen house for the holidays), and, at a loss, Keller tries to reconstruct the remains his life through lonely action. In doing so, he telephones his ranch manager in Texas to check in and discovers that their Alpha bison, the largest male in the herd, is going crazy, destroying other livestock and wreaking havoc on the ranch. The manager says the aging (and expensive) bison may have to be put down in the interest of the other livestock and the property, and Keller nominates himself for the job, using his bow and arrow and hunting the bison on horseback across the ranch. It does not end well for the bison, other innocent people, and Keller himself. Taut, visual, and ultimately visceral, it's a good read.

Sample Book Insights: #1 The parable of the two brothers is about two groups of people: the younger brother, who leaves home to follow Jesus, and the elder brother, who stays home and follows the traditional morality of his family and community. #2 The parable of the two brothers demonstrates the destructive self-centeredness of the younger brother, but it also condemns the elder brother’s moralistic life in the strongest terms. It demonstrates that both the irreligious and the religious are spiritually lost. #3 The first child in a family tends to be the parent-pleaser, while the second child tends to be the rebel. The first child grows up, takes a conventional job, and settles down near Mom and Dad, while the second child goes off to live in the hip-shabby neighborhoods of New York and Los Angeles. #4 The irony of the modern culture wars is that Christianity is typically viewed as a religion and moralism, but in reality, it was not always so. From the beginning, Christianity was viewed as a tertium quid, something else entirely.

Sample Book Insights: #1 The Pew study showed that the world is becoming more religious, not less. Christians and Muslims will make up an increasing percentage of the world’s population, while the proportion that is secular will shrink. #2 The growth of religion in the world is not something that happened as advertised. While many people have been undereducated, there are also many who have found secular reason to have things missing from it that are necessary to live life well. #3 The idea of transcendence is the basis of human rights and equality, and it can only be proven through faith. Secular reason cannot provide us with a definition of what a good human person is, and science cannot judge morality. #4 While science is a great source of good for society, it cannot be the only source. It will be discovered that there are too many things we need that it is missing.

Sample Book Insights: #1 The Haines family was murdered in their house in Manheim Township, Pennsylvania, on May 12, 2007. The police believed that the killer knew the family, knew where they lived, and knew how to get into their house. They were certain that the family had been deliberately targeted. #2 The case was suddenly resolved on June 16, 2007, when a man named Timothy Kreider called the police and said that he knew the identity of the killer. He then offered up a suspect no one would have suspected, his 16-year-old son, Alec. #3 In 2008, Alec Kreider went on trial for three counts of first-degree murder. With his confession, backed up by substantial forensic and DNA evidence, he had very little option but to plead guilty and accept the consequences of his actions.

Book excerpt: The story of the fraught, symbiotic relationship between Keller and the tempestuous and flamboyant Anne Sullivan. While their emotional bond was deep and abiding, their views and values were poles apart. Where Keller was idealistic - a socialist and suffragette - Sullivan was pessimistic and conservative. The lasting impression is that of Keller's unrealised longing for independence.
