Book excerpt: A witty philosophical murder mystery with a charming twist: the crack detectives are sheep determined to discover who killed their beloved shepherd. On a hillside near the cozy Irish village of Glennkill, a flock of sheep gathers around their shepherd, George, whose body lies pinned to the ground with a spade. George has cared devotedly for the flock, even reading them books every night. Led by Miss Maple, the smartest sheep in Glennkill (and possibly the world), they set out to find George’s killer. The A-team of investigators includes Othello, the “bad-boy” black ram; Mopple the Whale, a Merino who eats a lot and remembers everything; and Zora, a pensive black-faced ewe with a weakness for abysses. Joined by other members of the richly talented flock, they engage in nightlong discussions about the crime, wild metaphysical speculations, and embark on reconnaissance missions into the village, where they encounter some likely suspects. Along the way, the sheep confront their own all-too-human struggles with guilt, misdeeds, and unrequited love. Funny, fresh, and endearing, it introduces a wonderful new breed of detectives to Canadian readers.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html Jesus cried out with a loud voice so that we could enlighten that when He said: “I have the power to lay My soul,” this was true, for He gives the soul with power. What was this appeal? “Father, in thy hands I betray my spirit,” for not by compulsion, but he voluntarily gave up the spirit. This shows: “I betray”; also shows that He is thinking again to receive His soul, for every pledge is again given back. Thanks be to the Lord that when He died and when His spirit was handed over to the Father, from that time the souls of the saints are put into the hands of God, and not in the dungeons of hell, as before, so that the death of Christ became our sanctification. For this, death is invoked with a loud voice, not daring and come up if it had not been called. The church curtain consisted of a kind of canvas hung in the middle of the temple and separating the inside from the outside, like a wall. That it is torn apart - through this God shows that the temple, inaccessible and unseen, the inside of which was covered with a veil, will be in such humiliation and contempt that it will be accessible to everyone and anyone can consider it. Others indicate other causes of strife. A torn curtain meant, they say, the abolition of the letter of law, and also that all that was lawful was revealed, which had previously been covered with a letter, like a kind of curtain - and everything that was previously obscure and mysterious would become clear now, having been fulfilled on Christ. One can also say that, as was the custom of the Jews in the case of blasphemy, to tear their clothes, so now the temple of God, as if grieving for the death of God, tore his clothes, the veil. And someone else could say, but that is enough. The elements then hesitated, as if testifying that the Sufferer is the Creator, so showing at the same time that that there will be a change in deeds, for the Scripture considers an earthquake as a sign of a change in deeds. So the transfer of God's view from the Jews to the Gentiles took place. And the stones, that is, the stone hearts of the Gentiles, were dissolved and accepted the seed of truth, and those who had been killed by sins rose up and entered the holy city, into Jerusalem above, and appeared to be many who walk on a broad path; appearing to them, they became for them the prototype of a good life and conversion: for, seeing a man, first mortified by passions, and then turned and entered the holy heavenly city, another imitates him and turns around in every way. However, it was invented too exquisitely. You know that the resurrection of the dead, which happened at the cross of the Lord, made it clear that the souls that were in hell were released. The Risen then appeared to many, so that what happened would not seem like a dream; But they have risen for the sake of a sign; and it is clear that they died again. However, some say that they were resurrected after the resurrection of Christ and another time did not die. I do not know if this should be accepted.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestselling author—and “a mythmaker for the millennium, a wiseacre wiseman” (New York Times Book Review)—delivers a surreal and elaborate quest that takes readers from Tokyo to the remote mountains of northern Japan, where the unnamed protagonist has a surprising confrontation with his demons. An advertising executive receives a postcard from a friend and casually appropriates the image for an advertisement. What he doesn’t realize is that included in the scene is a mutant sheep with a star on its back, and in using this photo he has unwittingly captured the attention of a man who offers a menacing ultimatum: find the sheep or face dire consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A SKETCHY FRENCHMAN AT THE WEDDING…ALONG WITH A FEW DARK SECRETS! Wedding bells sound in the Scottish countryside as the Bennett sisters travel across the pond to celebrate a very special occasion... A week littered with an unexpected torrential rainstorm, a recalcitrant housekeeper, a sister who tipples, and another who chases after sketchy Frenchmen. In spite of her bohemian tendencies and protestations, Annie—the eldest Bennett sister—is finally getting hitched to Callum Logan, the man of her dreams, in the picture-postcard idyllic Scottish Highlands. The mother of the groom has generously put up the Bennett family in her Kincardie House estate, a gorgeous hunting lodge that’s been in the Logan family for generations. Annie knew Callum’s family was well-off, but she didn’t know they lived like European royalty. And the fact that Annie is fourteen years older than her husband-to-be isn’t exactly a tidbit “Mother” Logan is too fond of. That said, Annie has reservations of her own. Is it just pre-wedding jitters? Or is she really willing to relinquish her much-loved independence in her mid-50s? Merle’s brought Pascal along for the week of jubilee, which she finds to be simultaneously thrilling and incredibly romantic… but is it excitement she’s feeling for her sister? Or doom? For his part, Pascal’s relieved to finally spend time with Merle after six long, dry months apart. But how can they continue like this, an ocean between them—his policeman’s salary hardly permitting flying over to see her on every whim… Does he have to give her up? Or should he find a new job in the States? Meanwhile, Francie frets about her seemingly perpetual third wheeling in coupledom, a thought she finds herself dulling with a little too much Scotch. Elise plans to dive into exotic Scotland head-first, casting aside previously-upheld polite female lawyer niceties: overseas, all bets are off, and she’s got her roving eye on Bruno, a mysterious man from Paris she met at the Edinburgh railway station—a man whose Napoleonesque looks and furtive behavior put Pascal’s investigator instincts on high alert. And amidst the Highlands’ signature fog, rain, sheep, and heather—not to mention the festivities’ decadent five course meals, Scottish whisky, fine sparkling wines, and family drama—a rare rainstorm with hurricane-force winds is heading right for the wedding party. And Jinty Arbuckle, the high-strung estate housekeeper, struggles to keep the Kincardie House in order and its brash American guests happy, all the while guarding secrets of her own. A little bit chick lit, a touch of cozy mystery, a whole lot of humor, romance, suspense, and downright excellent writing. Guaranteed a rollicking ride for fans of all of the above!

Book excerpt: BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Jon Katz's Going Home. In Dog Days, Jon Katz, the squire of Bedlam Farm, allows us to live our dreams of leaving the city for the country, and shares the unpredictable adventure of farm life. The border collies, the sheep, the chickens, the cat, the ram, and one surprisingly sociable steer named Elvis all contribute to the hum (and occasional roar) of Bedlam. On timeless summer days and in punishing winter storms, Katz continues his meditation on what animals can selflessly teach us–and what we in turn owe to them. With good neighbors, a beautiful landscape, and tales of true love thrown in, Dog Days gives us not only marvelous animal stories but a rich portrait of the harmonious world that is Bedlam Farm. Praise for Dog Days: “Anyone who has ever loved an animal, who owns a farm or even dreams of it, will read Dog Days with appreciation and a cathartic lump in his or her throat.” –The Washington Post “Katz proves himself a Thoreau for modern times as he ponders the relationships between man and animals, humanity and nature, and the particularly smelly qualities of manure.” –Fort Worth Star-Telegram “Katz constructs the perfect blend between self-revelation and his subtle brand of humor.” –The Star-Ledger “City-dweller-turned-farmer Katz . . . returns with further adventures from his animal-filled upstate New York sheep farm. Charming.” –People “The perfect summer book . . . You will not be disappointed.” –The Philadelphia Inquirer “A new twist on the American dream.” –The Christian Science Monitor “Thoroughly enchanting.” –The Dallas Morning News
