Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Keeling Letters Recollections An apology may seem to be needed for publishing letters so intimate and personal as some of these. I can only say that I longed to preserve some record of the thought and effort which Keeling put into the conduct of life, and I am certain that it would have been his wish that his experience and even his blunders and his failures should be of use to others. My daughter's courage and her confidence in my judgment, a confidence for which I am most grateful, have enabled me to relate the circumstances of his life with a frankness which would have been impossible for anyone else. I wish to thank his brother and those friends of his who have helped and encouraged me in the task, and especially Mr. J. C. Squire, by whom it was at first undertaken and who was obliged by pressure of work to relinquish it. To him I am indebted both for help with the letters and for permission to include several articles that appeared in the New Statesman. To Mrs. Green my thanks are due for much kind assistance and sympathy; to the Bishop of Southwark, Mr. Fort, and Mr. Greenwood, for their reminiscences, and above all to Mr. H. G. Wells, whose Preface gives point to the book. While expressing my gratitude to these friends of Keeling's, I am anxious to disclaim on their behalf all responsibility with regard to the selection of letters and of passages from his journal. Any errors of taste or misrepresentations of fact to be found in the book are due entirely to me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers once believed in Proust’s madeleine and in Wordsworth’s recollections of his boyhood—but that was before literary culture began to defer to Freud’s questioning of adult memories of childhood. In this first sustained look at childhood memories as depicted in literature, Lorna Martens reveals how much we may have lost by turning our attention the other way. Her work opens a new perspective on early recollection—how it works, why it is valuable, and how shifts in our understanding are reflected in both scientific and literary writings. Science plays an important role in The Promise of Memory, which is squarely situated at the intersection of literature and psychology. Psychologists have made important discoveries about when childhood memories most often form, and what form they most often take. These findings resonate throughout the literary works of the three writers who are the focus of Martens’ book. Proust and Rilke, writing in the modernist period before Freudian theory penetrated literary culture, offer original answers to questions such as “Why do writers consider it important to remember childhood? What kinds of things do they remember? What do their memories tell us?” In Walter Benjamin, Martens finds a writer willing to grapple with Freud, and one whose writings on childhood capture that struggle. For all three authors, places and things figure prominently in the workings of memory. Connections between memory and materiality suggest new ways of understanding not just childhood recollection but also the artistic inclination, which draws on a childlike way of seeing: object-focused, imaginative, and emotionally intense.

Book excerpt: Between the opulent Edwardian years and the 1920s the First World War opens like a gap in time. England after the war was a different place; the arts were different; history was different; sex, society, class were all different. Samuel Hynes examines the process of that transformation. He explores a vast cultural mosaic comprising novels and poetry, music and theatre, journalism, paintings, films, parliamentary debates, public monuments, sartorial fashions, personal diaries and letters. Told in rich detail, this penetrating account shatters much of the received wisdom about the First World War. It shows how English culture adapted itself to the needs of killing, how our stereotypes of the war gradually took shape and how the nations thought and imagination were profoundly and irretrievably changed.

Book excerpt: "Women and men who have taken part in campaigns to improve the lot of women in society today will recognise many familiar concerns in this biography of two early women activists. Maud Pember Reeves and her daughter Amber were, at different stages, caught up in the surge of the women's movement both in New Zealand and in England. Through links with the Fabian society, they became involved with some of the colourful literary and radical figures of their day -- G.B. Shaw, Beatrice and Sidney Webb and H.G. Wells among them. The story of their personal lives, which were not without complications, is told against a background which throws light on the social development of their times. As the wife and daughter of the eminent politician and journalist William Pember Reeves, Maud and Amber have been relegated very much to the background in previous accounts. This book sets the record straight. ..."--Inside front cover.

Join the Random House Reader’s Circle for author chats and more. In boyhood, Louis Zamperini was an incorrigible delinquent. As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will. Appearing in paperback for the first time—with twenty arresting new photos and an extensive Q&A with the author—Unbroken is an unforgettable testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit, brought vividly to life by Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand. [Hillenbrand] has crafted another masterful blend of sports, history and overcoming terrific odds; this is biography taken to the nth degree, a chronicle of a remarkable life lived through extraordinary times.”—The Dallas Morning News “An astonishing testament to the superhuman power of tenacity.”—Entertainment Weekly “A tale of triumph and redemption . . . astonishingly detailed.”—O: The Oprah Magazine “[A] masterfully told true story . . . nothing less than a marvel.”—Washingtonian “[Hillenbrand tells this] story with cool elegance but at a thrilling sprinter’s pace.”—Time “Hillenbrand [is] one of our best writers of narrative history.
