Book excerpt: Jennifer Wunder makes a strong case for the importance of hermeticism and the secret societies to an understanding of John Keats's poetry and his speculations about religious and philosophical questions. Although secret societies exercised enormous cultural influence during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, they have received little attention from Romantic scholars. And yet, information about the societies permeated all aspects of Romantic culture. Groups such as the Rosicrucians and the Freemasons fascinated the reading public, and the market was flooded with articles, pamphlets, and books that discussed the societies's goals and hermetic philosophies, debated their influence, and drew on their mythologies for literary inspiration. Wunder recovers the common knowledge about the societies and offers readers a first look at the role they played in the writings of Romantic authors in general and Keats in particular. She argues that Keats was aware of the information available about the secret societies and employed hermetic terminology and imagery associated with these groups throughout his career. As she traces the influence of these secret societies on Keats's poetry and letters, she offers readers a new perspective not only on Keats's writings but also on scholarship treating his religious and philosophical beliefs. While scholars have tended either to consider Keats's aesthetic and religious speculations on their own terms or to adopt a more historical approach that rejects an emphasis on the spiritual for a materialist interpretation, Wunder offers us a middle way. Restoring Keats to a milieu characterized by simultaneously worldly and mythological propensities, she helps to explain if not fully reconcile the insights of both camps.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look into secrets hidden in music, painting, sculpture, and architecture • Ranges from paintings of Byzantine icons to Salvador Dali, music from Mozart to Satanic Rock, and mystery sites from the Pyramids to Andrea Palladio’s Villa Cornaro • Includes more than 100 color and black-and-white images that reveal the mysteries contained in these artistic works In Secret Societies and the Hermetic Code, Ernesto Frers presents a virtual museum of artistic works that contain occult secrets. The scope of his research ranges from the paintings of Byzantine icons to Salvador Dali, from mystery sites such as the Pyramids to the architecture of Andrea Palladio’s Villa Cornaro. He also discusses the hermetic influence on music evidenced in the works of Mozart through to the modern era of rock and roll. Frers explains that all cultures encode in their architecture, art, and music the instructions and diagram of their esoteric ritual and faith. He shows how during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Church’s severe censure of anything antithetical to its dogma forced artists to conceal mystical references within the religious images or scenes they depicted. By examining works that have not received such scrutiny before, including those of Titian, di Cosimo, Botticelli, and Rembrandt, Frers brings to light the symbols and cryptic messages hidden in these masterworks. He presents his evidence using more than 100 color and black-and-white images to reveal the mysteries contained in these works of art. He also extends his investigation to the occult leanings of modern-day musicians such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zepplin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secret Societies and Classic Literature is about much more than the connections between some of the greatest authors in literary history and the covert organizations they were associated with. It also encompasses sacred geometry, science, the ancient wisdom those authors drew on for their inspiration, and how that wisdom is so relevant in contemporary society. It is about prophets, their visions, and the probable stimulus for their vivid imaginations and creative genius. It is also about political intrigue and upheaval, outlaws, outcasts, sexual scandals, espionage, and hallucinogenic substances. Why does the number nine indicate the possible intelligent design of the universe? Why are snakes worshiped in ancient cultures that were separated by thousands of miles? How did Jonathan Swift predict Mars's two moons a century and a half before their existence was confirmed? Did Christopher Marlowe plot to overthrow Queen Elizabeth, and how and why was he killed? Did William Blake's vision of the universe's creation mirror that of lost Gnostic texts that were undiscovered until 1945? What was Francis Bacon's true relationship to William Shakespeare and his works? This book takes a closer look at all these questions and reveals much more about the authors and the intriguing lives they led en route to literary immortality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of how esoteric brotherhoods have shaped history • Examines the secret chronology and clandestine causes of seminal world events • Shows how secret societies feed into one another, and how they have worked together For thousands of years secret societies--guardians of ancient esoteric wisdom--have exercised a strong and often crucial influence on the destiny of nations. Though largely ignored by orthodox historians, the Freemasons, Knights Templar, and Rosicrucians affected the course of the French and American Revolutions as well as the overthrow of the medieval feudal order. Inevitably, the true ideals and esoteric practices of these societies have, at times, been perverted by self-serving individuals. The Nazis and the Bolsheviks, British security forces, the founding fathers of America, and the Vatican have all justified their actions--for good or for ill--by claiming the mystic ideals of secret societies. Michael Howard explores these connections, tracing their effects in politics and statecraft from the time of ancient Egypt up to the present. He sheds light on the influence of secret societies on governments and in the lives of many well-known figures, including Frederick the Great, John Dee, Francis Bacon, Benjamin Franklin, Comte de Cagliostro, Helena Blavatsky, Rasputin, and Woodrow Wilson. He contends that the recent formation of the European Union was directed by an umbrella group of secret societies and reveals that though secret societies have been persecuted throughout history, they have survived and continue to operate powerfully in world affairs today.
