The second book, by Ryujun Tajima, translates the first chapter, with the scripture's theory of becoming a Buddha in one life, copiously using Subhakarasimha's commentary, summary of the remaining chapters, and includes introductory material stressing the Sino-Japanese approach, especially introducing the reader to the positions of the Shingon sect.

Book Synopsis The Concept of Bharatavarsha and Other Essays by : B. D. Chattopadhyaya
Download or read book The Concept of Bharatavarsha and Other Essays written by B. D. Chattopadhyaya and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploration of key terms related to social and political order, found in early Indian texts, challenges the idea of a unified ancient India and a unified national identity at that time. This collection explores what may be called the idea of India in ancient times. Its undeclared objective is to identify key concepts which show early Indian civilization as distinct and differently oriented from other formations. The essays focus on ancient Indian texts within a variety of genres. They identify certain key termssuch as janapada, desa, var?a, dharma, bh?vain their empirical contexts to suggest that neither the ideas embedded in these terms nor the idea of Bharatavarsha as a whole are given entities, but that they evolved historically. Professor Chattopadhyaya examines these texts to unveil historical processes. Without denying comparative history, he stresses that the internal dynamics of a society are best decoded via its own texts. His approach bears very effectively on understanding ongoing interactions between Indias Great Tradition and Little Traditions. As a whole, this book is critical of the notion of overarching Indian unity in the ancient period. It punctures the retrospective thrust of hegemonic nationalism as an ideology that has obscured the diverse textures of Indian civilization. Renowned for his scholarship on the ancient Indian past, Professor Chattopadhyayas latest collection only consolidates his high international reputation.

Book Synopsis Cultures of Memory in South Asia by : D. Venkat Rao
Download or read book Cultures of Memory in South Asia written by D. Venkat Rao and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture of Memory in South Asia reconfigures European representations of India as a paradigmatic extension of a classical reading, which posits the relation between text and context in a determined way. It explores the South Asian cultural response to European “textual” inheritances. The main argument of this work is that the reflective and generative nodes of Indian cultural formations are located in the configurations of memory, the body and idiom (verbal and visual), where the body or the body complex becomes the performative effect and medium of articulated memories. This work advances its arguments by engaging with mnemocultures-cultures of memory that survive and proliferate in speech and gesture. Drawing on Sanskrit and Telugu reflective sources, this work emphasizes the need to engage with cultural memory and the compositional modes of Indian reflective traditions. This important and original work focuses on the ruptured and stigmatised resources of heterogeneous Indian traditions and calls for critical humanities that move beyond the colonially configured received traditions. Cultures of Memory suggests the possibilities of transcultural critical humanities research and teaching initiatives from the Indian context in today’s academy.
Book Synopsis Diversity in Intellectual Property by : Irene Calboli
Download or read book Diversity in Intellectual Property written by Irene Calboli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to create an interface between intellectual property and diversity - including cultural, biological, religious, racial, and gender-based diversity. While acknowledging that the historical rationale for intellectual property protection is based on theories of utilitarian incentives and property rights, the authors of this volume assert that the current intellectual property framework is not incompatible with including diversity as part of its objectives. Through its various themes, this book delves into the debate of whether such inclusion can be made possible and how intellectual property norms could be effectively used to protect and promote diversity. In this volume, leading scholars address ongoing regional, national, and international debates within the contexts of diversity, the existing legal framework, and the broader political and economic climate. The authors tackle such wide-ranging topics as the prohibition against trademarking slurs and concepts of intellectual property in ancient Indian texts.
Book Synopsis Indian Kāvya Literature by : A. K. Warder
Download or read book Indian Kāvya Literature written by A. K. Warder and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1972 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries starts with Vidyakara`s retrospect over anonymous poets (named ones having mostly found their places in earlier volumes). After some smaller anthologies a few novels and Mankhaka`s mythological epic we come to a historical epic. History is the most substantial source of matter for literature in the volume. That might seem to contrast with Vol. Vi, but as literature its aim is always are, not facts which narrows the gap.
