Book excerpt: Kanji Alchemy - Back to the Roots features a novel and original approach to learning Japanese characters with an emphasis on radicals. Organised more as a workbook than a textbook, the objective is to select a radical that is the appropriate element for a character that only lists the English translation(s) and the Japanese readings. Although the number of radicals has been limited to 96, approximately 80% of Jouyou kanji has been covered whilst through clustering of orthographically similar kanji only 1/3 of Jouyou kanji (or about 700) new forms need to be learned. There are 12 chapters of which the last 2 chapters each share 3 units related to Complementary Characters. (Complementary Characters are kanji that in addition to a previously allocated radical can take a second one. This category has been separated from the main text and features in the last two chapters of this book.) Each of the remaining other chapters contain 7 units or weeks. This design makes it easy to start with small, self-contained units as each week has 7 days that can be studied individually. Each week contains 3 sections: in the first section the task is to select the appropriate radical for the kanji. This is followed by the Answer Key that features the kanji and their respective radicals and completed by the Practice section in which the character is shown in a kanji compound.

Book excerpt: Kanji compounds (a combination of two or more Japanese characters) are an essential part of texts because they constitute the most common word structure in the Japanese written language. The emphasis on kanji compounds will bring definite benefits such as acquiring vocabulary and improving reading proficiency because they feature so dominantly in the writing system. Any reference to more abstract concepts will invariably involve the use of compounds and that means that anyone who wishes to go beyond "everyday language" will need to confront this linguistic challenge. Just like vocabulary in western languages, many Japanese character compounds are not transparent requiring a fair amount of rote learning and causing at times considerable frustration? Nonetheless, to focus on one singular character without considering compounds is arguably "unfinished business" because it shows only half of the story. It's like a bell without a clapper or a canvass without a brush: the rudiments are there but without the other components its potential will remain unfulfilled. There are three supplements in total that are part of the Kanji Alchemy series that include Jouyou kanji, Jinmeiyou kanji and Hyougaiji amounting to more than 6400 characters. To randomly list these thousands of characters would be a self-defeating exercise and will not be of much use to anyone. Kanji Alchemy highlights common aspects and similar elements with all characters cross-referenced and presented in a way that facilitates recognition and understanding. It is a consistent and rational approach to what otherwise would be a bewildering collection of non-related characters. In any event, the road to Japanese literacy might be long and tortuous but it is paved with kanji compounds!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to various reasons most Japanese characters (kanji) have two or more pronunciations and frequently different meanings as well. Although kanji often have a Sino-Chinese reading (on-yomi), a native Japanese reading (kun-yomi) and a reading for Japanese names (nanori), they on occasion only have one reading. This textbook is designed to highlight a range of nearly 700 characters that have one reading only. The current Jouyou Kanji (regular-use kanji) list consists of 2136 characters so approximately one-third of these characters have a one-to-one relationship between sound and symbol. Focusing initially on the 700 characters will strongly reduce the burden on memory and make the learning process a great deal less onerous.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Course is an innovative and highly effective system for learning and remembering kanji, or Sino-Japanese characters. The book contains 2,300 character entries, including all 2,136 Joyo Kanji ("regular-use kanji") plus 164 of the most useful non-Joyo Kanji. It offers a sophisticated, pedagogically sound method for remembering the basic meaning(s) of each character, conveniently summarized in concise keywords to facilitate memorization. Each kanji is accompanied by an explanation of how to remember its meaning(s) clearly and distinctly. These mnemonic explanations teach you to associate each kanji’s graphical form with its unique range of meaning, often by "seeing" its meaning in the form of the kanji itself. An outstanding feature of the course is the special attention it gives to the challenge of learning each kanji in a differentiated way. This allows you to associate the meaning of each character with the features that distinguish it from graphically similar characters. Another unique feature—and a significant breakthrough in kanji pedagogy—is the sequence in which the course introduces kanji. Most kanji dictionaries and textbooks arrange their entries in ways that do not address the needs of non-native learners, such as by traditional radical or by the grades in which the kanji are taught in Japanese schools. The Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Course uses an original sequence that presents graphically related characters one after the other to help you give significance to their contrastive features as you learn them, and thereby avoid having to relearn them later. It also introduces the meaning and usage of each graphical element—each kanji building block—the first time it appears, thus enabling you to seamlessly and rapidly acquire new characters. In short, The Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Course makes learning and remembering kanji easier than ever before. This book fills an urgent need for a timesaving yet sophisticated kanji-learning system that can be used from beginning through advanced levels—an enjoyable, no-nonsense path to proficiency. It is intended for anyone serious about learning to read Japanese. Features: Includes 2,300 kanji entries Completely up-to-date: includes all the 2,136 officially prescribed Joyo Kanji ("kanji for regular use") Each entry explains how to remember the character’s meaning clearly and distinctly, often through the innovative use of visualization and concrete imagery Introduces kanji components in a logical, step-by-step order that makes learning new kanji easier than ever Can be used as a stand-alone resource or together with The Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Dictionary. Includes cross-references, character meanings, readings, and sample vocabulary from the dictionary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purchase the Remembering the Kanji App and take your kanji knowledge to the next level! Following the first volume of Remembering the Kanji, the present work takes up the pronunciation of characters and provides students with helpful tools for memorizing them. Behind the notorious inconsistencies in the way the Japanese language has come to pronounce the characters it received from China lie several coherent patterns. Identifying these patterns and arranging them in logical order can reduce dramatically the amount of time spent in the brute memorization of sounds unrelated to written forms. Many of the "primitive elements," or building blocks, used in the drawing of the characters also serve to indicate the "Chinese reading" that particular kanji use, chiefly in compound terms. By learning one of the kanji that uses such a "signal primitive," one can learn the entire group at the same time. In this way, Remembering the Kanji 2 lays out the varieties of phonetic patterns and offers helpful hints for learning readings, which might otherwise appear completely random, in an efficient and rational way. A parallel system of pronouncing the kanji, their "Japanese readings," uses native Japanese words assigned to particular Chinese characters. Although these are more easily learned because of the association of the meaning to a single word, Heisig creates a kind of phonetic alphabet of single-syllable words, each connected to a simple Japanese word, and shows how they can be combined to help memorize particularly troublesome vocabulary. Unlike Volume 1, which proceeds step-by-step in a series of lessons, Volume 2 is organized in such as way that one can study individual chapters or use it as a reference for pronunciation problems as they arise. Individual frames cross-reference the kanji to alternate readings and to the frame in Volume 1 in which the meaning and writing of the kanji was first introduced.
