Download or read book The Tin Cry written by Gerard Hindmarsh and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-05 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year is 1890, and stream tin has been sensationally discovered in southern Stewart Island of New Zealand. Elizabeth - young, gentile, sheltered, and fresh off the boat from Scotland - has arrived in remote and rugged Port Pegasus to meet George, her betrothed, who is running the only miner’s hotel there. But it is a chance meeting with miner who ends up capturing her heart, convincing her that her future is far different from what her family back home had in mind. Playing out alongside is the professional struggle between Professor James Black of Otago University, whose fervour to find the tin-lode caused the whole crazy tin rush in the first place, and his nemesis, staunch government geologist Alexander Mackay, who becomes hell bent on bringing everyone to their senses. As the rush implodes, the end is climatic for all concerned. A well-researched story of historical fiction which accurately records New Zealand’s only tin rush, The Tin Cry takes its name from the scientific term describing the noise a bar of tin makes when it is continually bent back and forth until it eventually breaks.

Download or read book Lost Gold written by Paul Bensemann and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young man in the mid-1970s, Paul Bensemann was told an archetypal 'lost gold' story by his neighbour, a tobacco farmer in the Motueka Valley on the edge of what is now Kahurangi National Park. The story concerned an old prospector who had found a huge exposed gold reef, shining in the sun, deep in the mountain wilderness of Northwest Nelson. Just before he died, the prospector drew a map, and to Paul's amazement his neighbour then produced the old, tatty, hand-drawn map, which had been handed down to him from his father. Since that meeting Paul has spent over 30 years trying to unravel this untold story, linking many different characters and their often obsessive and always secretive efforts to find this very New Zealand treasure. The search for the reef was originally triggered by Government geologists who reported finding a huge reef in the 1880s. It has since been pursued by many different prospectors, from bushmen on the West Coast to F.G. Gibbs, a prominent early Nelson identity. Lost Gold follows the many twists and turns of this 105-year-old story, and tries to explain why the reef has never been rediscovered. But in the end, whether or not the reef exists is only part of the story, and perhaps the bigger treasure here is the real tale of men in pursuit of their own El Dorado.

Download or read book Outsiders written by Gerard Hindmarsh and published by Craig Potton Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerard Hindmarsh argues that New Zealand is lucky to have had, and still have, its fair share of people who choose to live out on the fringes of society. He believes these 'outsiders', in their love of a free and unhindered life, offer an important counterbalance to the highpressured, commercialised and urban world that most of us inhabit. It is these outsiders who are the subject of this book, a wonderfully diverse group of people who, both historically and in the present day, found room beyond the cities and towns to live their lives in their own individual way. The characters who fill these pages range from a hermit who spent 47 years on his own island in the Marlborough Sounds; a farmer from probably the most remote farm in New Zealand on the west coast of Stewart Island; an eccentric mountain dweller waiting for the world to end in Kahurangi National Park; the now well-known Robert Long, or 'Beansprout', from Gorge River in South Westland; a fisherman who jumped ship in Fiordland National Park; and many more.Gerard Hindmarsh has a great eye for a story, and in Outsiders he presents a highly readable and colourful social history, which speaks strongly about a rich vein of New Zealand identity.
