Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few years, considerable interest has been focused on the phase that waves accumulate when the equations governing the waves vary slowly. The recent flurry of activity was set off by a paper by Michael Berry, where it was found that the adiabatic evolution of energy eigenfunctions in quantum mechanics contains a phase of geometric origin (now known as ‘Berry's phase’) in addition to the usual dynamical phase derived from Schrödinger's equation. This observation, though basically elementary, seems to be quite profound. Phases with similar mathematical origins have been identified and found to be important in a startling variety of physical contexts, ranging from nuclear magnetic resonance and low-Reynolds number hydrodynamics to quantum field theory. This volume is a collection of original papers and reprints, with commentary, on the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate students typically enter into courses on string theory having little to no familiarity with the mathematical background so crucial to the discipline. As such, this book, based on lecture notes, edited and expanded, from the graduate course taught by the author at SISSA and BIMSA, places particular emphasis on said mathematical background. The target audience for the book includes students of both theoretical physics and mathematics. This explains the book’s "strange" style: on the one hand, it is highly didactic and explicit, with a host of examples for the physicists, but, in addition, there are also almost 100 separate technical boxes, appendices, and starred sections, in which matters discussed in the main text are put into a broader mathematical perspective, while deeper and more rigorous points of view (particularly those from the modern era) are presented. The boxes also serve to further shore up the reader’s understanding of the underlying math. In writing this book, the author’s goal was not to achieve any sort of definitive conciseness, opting instead for clarity and "completeness". To this end, several arguments are presented more than once from different viewpoints and in varying contexts.

Book excerpt: 00 This practical treatise is an introduction to the mathematics and physics of affine Kac-Moody algebras. It is the result of an unusual interdisciplinary effort by two physicists and two mathematicians to make this field understandable to a broad readership and to illuminate the connections among seemingly disparate domains of mathematics and physics that are tantalizingly suggested by the ubiquity of Lie theory. The book will be useful to Lie algebraists, high energy physicists, statistical mechanics, and number theorists. Volume One contains a description of Kac-Moody Lie algebras, and especially the affine algebras and their representations; the results of extensive computations follow in Volume Two, which is spiral bound for easy reference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During its forty year lifespan, string theory has always had the power to divide, being called both a 'theory of everything' and a 'theory of nothing'. Critics have even questioned whether it qualifies as a scientific theory at all. This book adopts an objective stance, standing back from the question of the truth or falsity of string theory and instead focusing on how it came to be and how it came to occupy its present position in physics. An unexpectedly rich history is revealed, with deep connections to our most well-established physical theories. Fully self-contained and written in a lively fashion, the book will appeal to a wide variety of readers from novice to specialist.

This volume contains a selection of articles and review topics covering his well-known studies on the renormalization of non-Abelian gauge theorems, topological phenomena in gauge field theory and thoughts on the role of black holes in quantum gravity. The chapters are tied together by thoughtful commentaries which provide a background and the illumination of hindsight ? together they form a clear and coherent picture of the physical and theoretical importance of gauge theories and the gauge principle. This book is ideal for students and researchers.Gerard 't Hooft is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. He has taught at Harvard, SLAC and Caltech prior to his present position. Other distinguished honors include being awarded the Dannie Heineman Prize, the Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Chicago, Wolf Prize of the State of Israel, Pius XI Medal (Vatican), and the Lorentz Medal (KNAW, Amsterdam).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Banff NATO Summer School was held August 14-25, 1989 at the Banff Cen tre, Banff, Albert, Canada. It was a combination of two venues: a summer school in the annual series of Summer School in Theoretical Physics spon sored by the Theoretical Physics Division, Canadian Association of Physi cists, and a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The Organizing Committee for the present school was composed of G. Kunstatter (University of Winnipeg), H.C. Lee (Chalk River Laboratories and University of Western Ontario), R. Kobes (University of Winnipeg), D.l. Toms (University of Newcastle Upon Tyne) and Y.S. Wu (University of Utah). Thanks to the group of lecturers (see Contents) and the timeliness of the courses given, the school, entitled PHYSICS, GEOMETRY AND TOPOLOGY, was popular from the very outset. The number of applications outstripped the 90 places of accommodation reserved at the Banff Centre soon after the school was announced. As the eventual total number of participants was increased to 170, it was still necessary to tum away many deserving applicants. In accordance with the spirit of the school, the geometrical and topologi cal properties in each of the wide ranging topics covered by the lectures were emphasized. A recurring theme in a number of the lectures is the Yang-Baxter relation which characterizes a very large class of integrable systems including: many state models, two-dimensional conformal field theory, quantum field theory and quantum gravity in 2 + I dimensions.

Book excerpt: Compiled to illustrate the recent history of Quantum Field Theory and its trends, this collection of selected reprints by Jürg Fröhlich, a leading theoretician in the field, is a comprehensive guide of the more mathematical aspects of the subject. Results and methods of the past fifteen years are reviewed. The analytical methods employed are non-perturbative and, for the larger part, mathematically rigorous. Most articles are review articles surveying certain important developments in quantum field theory and guiding the reader towards the original literature. The volume begins with a comprehensive introduction by Jürg Fröhlich. The theory of phase transitions and continuous symmetry breaking is reviewed in the first section. The second section discusses the non-perturbative quantization of topological solitons. The third section is devoted to the study of gauge fields. A paper on the triviality of λϖ4 — theory in four and more dimensions is found in the fourth section, while the fifth contains two articles on “random geometry”. The sixth and final part addresses topics in low-dimensional quantum field theory, including braid statistics, two-dimensional conformal field theory and an application to condensed matter theory.
