Book excerpt: This book gives an insight into the life of a carer, Carol, whose loved one, Paul, was addicted to alcohol. Carol never gave up hope that Paul would receive treatment and become the person he always wanted to be. But it was not to be. Paul died at the age of forty-two from cirrhosis of the liver. In her book, Carol concentrates more on how loved ones can get the support they need while dealing with their loved ones addiction. She details her journey through Pauls addiction and why she founded the charity Footprints, which offered support to others in a situation similar to hers. She talks honestly about her feelings of frustration, anger, and sadness but also is honest about feeling trapped in a relationship, not knowing in which direction to move, the many relapses that happen, the trips to the ER, the suicide attempts, and the violence. But she also shows compassion for the drinker, who is also trapped in the addiction, not knowing what life will be like without their nonjudgmental friend, the bottle of alcohol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Pleat has lived a life at the heart of football. From his debut as an England Schoolboy international in 1960 to his time as a scout for Tottenham Hotspur up to 2024, his is a story that touches every facet of the professional game. At Luton Town, he is perhaps best remembered for dancing on the pitch after a win over Manchester City secured the club's top-flight survival in 1983. However, his fifteen years at Kenilworth Road were about much more than that. In 1986, Pleat was given his shot at the big-time at Tottenham. But for a fabricated tabloid scandal, his sole season as manager, which featured a third-placed finish, an FA Cup final and a League Cup semi-final, might have been the start of a transformation at White Hart Lane. After spells at Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday, Pleat twice returned to Tottenham. Here, he gives his frank assessment of his chairmen, Alan Sugar and Daniel Levy, and an insider's account of the rise and fall of managers from Glenn Hoddle to José Mourinho. However, Just One More Goal is not just an account of one man's lifelong obsession with football. It is the story of an evolving game, one that moved away from instinct and spontaneity towards something colder and more technical. David Pleat's memoir is the perfect answer to the question of how modern football became what it is today.

Book excerpt: A powerful and evocative saga - the sequel to A GIRL CALLED THURSDAY. When Thursday Tilford returns to Haslar Hospital after two years serving as a VAD in Egypt, she finds many changes. With the town packed with troops waiting to leave for the Normandy beaches, and Haslar on standby for the wounded, Thursday's thoughts go to the two men who are vying for her heart: Connor Kirkpatrick, the naval doctor she met at Haslar in 1940, and army doctor Mark Sangster, who travelled with her on the troopship to Egypt. Although she longs to keep her promise to Connor, Thursday's feelings for Mark force her to consider the nature of promises and even, in the end, the nature of love itself. It is only as the war ends and she is presented with an ultimatum that she understands the truth about love, about promises - and about herself.

Book excerpt: The Prayer and Tears of Jacques Derrida takes its point of departure from Derrida's more recent, sometimes autobiographical writings and closely examines the religious motifs that have emerged in his later works. John D. Caputo's provocative interpretation of Derrida's thinking also makes an original contribution to the question of the relevance of deconstruction for religion. Caputo's Derrida is a man of faith who bridges Jewish and Christian traditions. The deep messianic, apocalyptic, and prophetic tones in Derrida's writings, Caputo argues, bespeak his broken covenant with Judaism. Through its startling exploration of Derrida's impossible religion, the book sheds light on the implications of deconstruction for an understanding of religion and faith today--from back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just One More Song is Herb Appleman’s account of coping with loss and grief following the death of his wife, Dee. It’s also the celebration of a marriage that was a love affair for forty-six years. The book takes the form of a diary that Herb kept during his first fifteen months of widowhood; and the entries are, for the most part, his conversations with Dee. These weren’t mystical experiences but as Herb says, “as real as memory, imagination, and love are real.” They came about because he couldn’t sleep. Even sleeping pills didn’t help. Nothing did, until one night, when he remembered a scene from the movie Sleepless in Seattle. It was a scene in which Tom Hanks played a character who’d been recently widowed and was having trouble sleeping. Out of the blue, he imagined his dead wife sitting on the other end of the sofa, talking to him, and he felt comforted. Herb thought he’d give it a try and imagined talking to Dee. It worked. From then on, knowing he could talk to her at the end of the day gave him something to look forward to, and after they talked, he found it easier to sleep. Their conversations were triggered by things that happened on a particular day but ranged, as conversations often do, over the whole of their lives. The tone of the book is set in the dedication, which begins, “Nearly every night before going to sleep, Dee liked me to sing to her. The song she’d pick would depend on her mood or the occasion, if the day was special, or simply on the time of year. On the first day of fall, when the colors began to change, she’d always pick ‘Autumn Leaves.’ More often than not, after I finished, she’d say, ‘Just one more song. This time you pick it.’” The dedication ends with “For Dee, in loving memory, just one more song.” Just One More Song is enhanced by personal photos and reproductions of Dee’s artwork; it’s a book to treasure and tell your friends about, especially if they’re in mourning or if they still believe that romantic love can last a lifetime—and longer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-six-year-old Aubrey Adderley is not your typical Southern California girl. Raised mostly by her grandparents, she inherited a love for an era when multimedia and technology did not yet rule the world; when a gentleman's promise was sealed with a handshake and a lady's honor was held in the highest esteem. Aubrey has a passion for classic movies from the Golden Age of cinema. MGM musicals are her favorite; Gene Kelly, her hero. At the tender age of ten, Aubrey accompanies her mother to an autograph signing and meets Mr. Kelly. Aubrey finds his reaction to her somewhat peculiar, but doesn't think about it again until years later when a series of events orchestrated by unknown forces causes everything to begin to make sense. With the help of her level-headed best friend Rusty - and the science lab which has unwittingly been left at her disposal by the doctor whose house she is sitting for the summer - our adventure-loving heroine travels to the past and encounters Gene Kelly at three very different seasons of his life. Against the backdrop of depression-era New York City, Gene and Aubrey attempt to warn an unsuspecting community on Long Island of the impending hurricane which would later be dubbed "The Long Island Express.” Aubrey battles prejudice at a time when women weren't always taken seriously, all the while fighting to stay one step ahead of the mysterious stranger who seems bent upon stopping her at every turn. She struggles against the physical toll that is an unavoidable side-effect of time traveling, and with the moral dilemmas that her travels present. Aubrey's brief visits to the past encompass nearly forty years of Gene's life. Her quest for the heart of her hero teaches her a valuable lesson about perseverance, loyalty, honor and love.

The Act of Cessation was launched during the transition between the Bush and Obama administrations with dire implications because of the rampant rumor of Obama being a closet-smoker. This book is a parody about a brilliant writer who lives two lives – one in the media industry interfacing with celebrities, a number of whom make cameo appearances. The other is his secret life as the last smoker on earth. Facilitated by nicotine stimulation, the protagonist is on a mission to return literature to society as a closet-smoker, writing the great American novel in his surreptitious sojourns to the underground. If apprehended by the anti-tobacco police he will be incarcerated in a place called the Midnight Express and never heard from again.

To have such a right is to have the standing or authority to demand a particular action of another person. Gilbert argues that joint commitment is a ground of demand-rights, and gives joint commitment accounts of both agreements and promises. [Source : éditeur].
