Book excerpt: Tackling genetic engineering, “Di Filippo’s effervescent prose can provoke both hilarity and haunting reflections on our species’ possible fate” (Publishers Weekly). Ribofunk contains eleven masterful and surprising works of imagination. In all of them, biology is the science that drives the engine of life and of story: the Protein Police patrol for renegade gene‐splicers; part‐human sea creatures live in the Great Lakes and clean up toxic spills; a river has become sentient; there is a bodyguard who is part wolverine and a thrill‐seeker climbs a skyscraper and gets stuck, literally.

Download or read book Only Human written by Sylvain Neuvel and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Rim meets The Martian in the explosive follow-up to Sleeping Giants (“One of the most promising series kickoffs in recent memory.”—NPR) and Waking Gods (“Pure, unadulterated literary escapism.”—Kirkus Reviews). Brilliant scientist Rose Franklin has devoted her adult life to solving the mystery she accidentally stumbled upon as a child: a huge metal hand buried beneath the ground outside Deadwood, South Dakota. The discovery set in motion a cataclysmic chain of events with geopolitical ramifications. Rose and the Earth Defense Corps raced to master the enigmatic technology, as giant robots suddenly descended on Earth’s most populous cities, killing one hundred million people in the process. Though Rose and her team were able to fend off the attack, their victory was short-lived. The mysterious invaders retreated, disappearing from the shattered planet . . . but they took the scientist and her crew with them. Now, after nearly ten years on another world, Rose returns to find a devastating new war—this time between humans. America and Russia are locked in combat, fighting to fill the power vacuum left behind after the invasion. Families are torn apart, friends become bitter enemies, and countries collapse in the wake of the battling superpowers. It appears the aliens left behind their titanic death machines so humankind will obliterate itself. Rose is determined to find a solution, whatever it takes. But will she become a pawn in a doomsday game no one can win? Praise for Only Human “Packing a surprisingly powerful thematic punch, this novel is an addictive blend of science fiction, apocalyptic thriller, and chillingly timely cautionary tale. Two (giant, robotic) thumbs up!”—Kirkus Reviews “Boasting a winning combination of briskly paced action and futuristic dystopia tempered by cautious optimism, Only Human brings a fitting, satisfying end to the Themis Files series.”—RT Book Reviews “This action-packed tale with apocalyptic stakes is a fitting finale to this wonderfully cinematic series.”—Publishers Weekly “Series fans will be eager for Neuvel’s ever-so-satisfying conclusion to his rip-roaring science-fiction adventure tale.”—Booklist Don’t miss any of The Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel: SLEEPING GIANTS | WAKING GODS | ONLY HUMAN

Download or read book Wi written by Bill Reed and published by Reed Independent. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surely you remember Wi, a name especially chosen to fit our attention spans? The world-record kidnappee, nabbee, swipee, snatchee, hoisted so many times even he’s lost count? (How about those three times in five minutes effort? That takes rare raw talent, that does.) I mean, if it wasn’t for our Wi how many of these yabbers, yarns, shaggy dogs and yank-your-chain whoppers could I trot out for you? Even getting across one’s not easy when it’s always against the wind from people laughing in your face. No, really, without our Wi, where would all the odd-balls be, drowning their sorrows by ingesting the food in Dominic’s Eatery, swallowing whole mouthfuls without a thought for their own safety? Would any plate get the Wi wipe and come out miraculously unscathed from what had been just laid upon it? Without Wi, how many screwballs could have hired him to do all they’ve always wanted to do? God knows, and the Talls say ‘God knows’ because, if you take it that God made him in His own image, then maybe you’ve stumbled across the one time God spoke too soon. Okay, setting that aside, coming to you is a cast of Lankan characters – and you’d cast too -- and barf, and burp – if you had some of Dominic’s food inside you, let’s not kid ourselves. Not all of us have cast-iron guts and can absorb what could canonize you if you kept it down. And our Wi can’t help being White, either. Did he ever ask for the hoists he’s had to suffer, or complained about the lack of duty-of-care his kidnappers have shown him -- their kidnappee, after all? No. All he asked was a hideaway high above the stars so bright. At least he got that. And, though having to watchfully wait, at least he received the epiphs, too. With the epiphs, he could epiphicatedly dream, so I guess he had something going for him. And let’s not forget he’s Talls recorded as having said, ‘Just let me know if I’m breathing too much and I’ll stop’. Hey, what kidnappee or country like Australia gets a kidnappee so considerate? Is he a peach of a pooch, or what? ---------------------- Bill Reed is an Australian novelist, playwright and short-story writer with national awards for all three. He now lives in both Australia and Sri Lanka.
Download or read book Judgement Call written by Tom Reilly and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-02-23 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once again, Reilly has penned a fast-moving nail-biting thriller. The storyline takes place in modern-day Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, during the occupation of the US and coalition forces amidst of the Trump peace negotiations with the Taliban and the Ashraf Ghani Government, for the planned withdrawal of all US forces by the end of 2021. Jacky Evans, an up-and-coming CIA agent at the age of twenty-six, had not gone unnoticed by her superiors at Langley and when a vacancy arose as the result of the mysterious disappearance of Meg Rennie, the Deputy Director of the CIA in Afghanistan, she was the perfect candidate. Having gone through a difficult relationship, it was the ideal career change and an exciting new challenge in a foreign country, and Jacky eagerly accepted the promotion. Was Rennie still alive or in captivity? No terrorist organization had claimed responsibility as yet, and the CIA was at a loss. The advent of the FBI at the direction of the President to bring the case to an early close, only added fuel to the fire with the CIA Director Jack Ross, and the worst was yet to come for Evans, caught in a web of illegal gunrunning, the opium drug cartel, the Mafia, death, destruction, and murder commonplace. The unexpected twists and turns will keep the reader hypnotized in search of the answers, and what happens in the next chapter. An exciting thriller not to be missed.
Book Synopsis Let's Give It Up for Gimme Lao! by : Sebastian Sim
Download or read book Let's Give It Up for Gimme Lao! written by Sebastian Sim and published by Epigram Books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I don’t aspire to be nice. I do what is necessary to get what I want.” Born on the night of the nation’s independence, Gimme Lao is cheated of the honour of being Singapore’s firstborn son by a vindictive nurse. This forms the first of three things Gimme never knows about himself, the second being the circumstances surrounding his parents’ marriage, and the third being the profound (but often unintentional) impact he has on other people’s lives. Talented, determined and focused, young Gimme is confident he can sail the seven seas, but he does not anticipate his vessel would have to carry his mother’s ambition, his wife’s guilt and his son’s secret. Tracing social, economic and political issues over the past 50 years, this humorous novel uses Gimme as a hapless centre to expose all of Singapore’s ambitions, dirty linen and secret moments of tender humanity.

It is an adult science fiction novel set in the somewhat near future in an alternate reality. It is the first book in a six part series. It starts with an ancient immortal soldier with the heart, mind, and body of a young adult who goes on a routine mission to squash some Space Pirate bugs. Unfortunately things do not go as planned. He and his squad are captured and are going to be experimented upon in a pirate bioweapons project. Fortunately for him, he manages to escape at the last second. Good, right? Wrong. His internal medical nanites are losing the battle within him and he quickly looses all of his advanced equipment; basically everything that made him unique. What will happen to him? The alternative is to try to grow up and try to make a name for himself, or else he'll lose himself and never return. This is the beginning of a new arc. Book Synopsis Gimme Shelter by : Mary Elizabeth Williams
Download or read book Gimme Shelter written by Mary Elizabeth Williams and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-03-03 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of course I want a home," writes Mary Elizabeth Williams, "I'm American." Gimme Shelter is the first book to reveal how this primal desire, "encoded into our cultural DNA," drove our nation to extremes, from the heights of an unprecedented housing boom to the depths of an unparalleled crash. As a writer and parent in New York City, Williams is careful to ground her real-estate dreams in the reality of her middle-class bank account. Yet as a person who knows no other way to fall in love than at first sight, her relationship with the nation's most daunting housing market is a passionate one. Williams's house-hunting fantasy quickly morphs into a test of endurance, as her search for a place to live and a mortgage she can afford stretches into a three-year odyssey that takes her to the farthest reaches of the boroughs and the limits of her own patience. "Welcome to the tracks," she declares at the outset of yet another weekend tour of blindingly bad, wildly overpriced properties. "Let's go to the wrong side of them, shall we?" As her own quest unfolds, Williams simultaneously reports on the housing markets nationwide. Friends and family members grapple with real estate agents and lenders, neighborhood and quality-of-life issues, all the while voicing common concerns, as expressed by this Maryland working parent of three: "The market was so hot, there were no houses. We looked for years at places the owners wouldn't even clean, let alone fix up." How frustrating is the process? Williams likens it to hearing "the opening bars of a song you think is 'Super Freak.' And then it turns out to be 'U Can't Touch This.'" Told in an engaging blend of factfinding and memoir, Gimme Shelter charts the course of the real estate bubble as it floated ever upward, not with faceless numbers and documents but with the details of countless personal stories -- about the undeniable urge to put down roots and the lengths to which we'll go to find our way home.
