This book in the Open Door English Series is in tended for the first year in the junior high school or for the seventh grade in the elementary school. It endeavors to make a sound, stimulating, and practical approach to the study of English and to provide a thorough training in the subject. The Open Door point of View. One of the most marked ad vances made in education within the past few years concerns the pupils' attitude toward their work. This book, in accordance with this advance, bases its lessons on the actual needs of youth, and makes it possible for each pupil to solve his own problems and make rapid progress in acquiring facility in speaking and writing. In its deeply grounded, true Americanism, it provides equal opportunity for everyone in a class, no matter what his native endowment may be, and, in so doing wins a pupil's co-opera tion and eliminates wasted effort that comes from working against a pupil rather than with him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in English for High Schools One of the reasons for the publication of A first book IN english is the belief On the part of the authors and the publishers that a better text of this kind is needed one that is thoroughly adapted to use in the majority of American high schools. To write such a book has been the purpose of the authors, who have brought to the work years of classroom experience in the teaching of English composition to pupils of the junior and the senior high school ages. Principles. Throughout the first book IN english the authors have kept clearly in mind the fundamental problems of English com position: (i) The problem of something to speak or write about; (2) the problems of gathering, evaluating, and organizing material; (3) the problems of expressing thoughts correctly, clearly, sincerely, and pleasingly; and (4) the problem of adapting what is spoken or written to a definite audience or to a definite body of readers. An ex amination of the lessons in this book will Show that these fundamentals have been made basic considerations. Nowhere in the book is there a discussion of the principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis as such. At the same time, the habit of ex pressing unified thoughts coherently and with emphasis is fixed through practice. The pupil learns to present unified, coherent, well-emphasized thoughts by learning through practice to express thoughts that he has first carefully selected, organized, and evaluated. The young pupil should not be confused with abstractions. He must learn by doing. Throughout the book the developing interests and abilities of boys and girls are carefully gauged and considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Latin Book for Junior High Schools The development of the Junior High School has brought about a need for certain changes in the organization and methods of presentation of the subject matter of the high school course. Simpler forms of statement, more extended drill, and the elimination or postponement of some topics which have 'been included in the elementary work of the four year high school are necessary in order to meet the needs of younger pupils. Such changes are especially impor tant in the study of foreign languages because of the fact that less time has been given for training in English and for gaining familiarity with the general principles of grammatical usage. In the case of a great many pupils Latin is the first for eign language to be studied. It should, therefore, be made as fully as possible an introduction to the general laws of language. Furthermore it should be presented in such a way as to reenforce the pupil's knowledge of the essential facts regarding the structure and grammatical usages of his own language. Often the inflections of the Latin sentence ele ments serve to make clear syntactical relations which have been vague to the pupil in his study of English and which must be understood by him before an intelligent use of his own language or of a foreign language is possible. The grammar material in this series consists of sentences from everyday speech, containing thoughts int esting to young people. The composition work aims to fix correct English id 11s and to eliminate from oral and written speech both colloquialisms and solecisms. Studies made by investigators in the school systems of several' American cities show that the same errors of speech recur everywhere among pupils; and these studies, as published by the National Society for the Study of Education, have been of service to the author. It also, through a careful distribution of drill exercises, self-testing reviews; standardized tests, and supple mentary practice exercises, makes it possible for each pupil to master individually whatever troubles him. In this distribution a pupil does not meet an important subject merely once. He comes across it again and again, and always under new and stimulating circumstances. In this way the points developed become warp and woof of his thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English, Vol. 2 Comparison of the tables of contents of Books I and II of the High School English series reveals at once a similarity of plans and a close correlation of materials and assignments. Book II is a direct outgrowth on a higher level of the ninth-grade text; it strengthens and complements the work of the earlier book as well as provides a stepping stone to activities of the junior and senior years. Nor does this cor relation begin and end with the two books, for attention is drawn constantly, not only to the importance of English in itself as a means to social and cultural enjoyment, but also to the importance of the mastery of English as a basis for all other work. The study of English is the study of the means of oral and written communication. The purpose, therefore, of Book II, like that of its predecessor, Is to lead high school students to a keener appreciation and mastery of Purpose written and spoken expression. The problem has been to secure the most adequate means to this end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Problems in the Solving, for the Junior and Senior High Schools This is not, however, the only benefit which we may expect as a result of the successful working out of the junior high school nor the most important to be kept in mind; for the junior high school will be for many boys and girls the end of their formal school educa tion. It therefore becomes a matter of the greatest importance that the pupil who leaves school as soon as he has passed the compulsory school age should be equipped to go out into life with as thorough training 3 in English as it is possible to give him. The junior high school with its departmental teaching offers the opportunity of concentrating upon the training of the pupils in their use of the most important tool they will need - whether they go into the senior high school? Or into business - accurate and forceful English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of High School English The teacher of English in the high schools of to-day has varied and manifold duties. To the lessons in literature and written composition, which were the staple diet a decade ago, there must now be added persistent instruction in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and oral composition, all duly planned and graded for the secondary school. Furthermore, every well-ordered course in English must include some provision for dramatic effort in the classroom if the work in oral expression is to be given its full value. The present volume contains material for study and practice in all these divisions of the subject, arranged with a view to affording the pupil as much growth-giving exercise as possible, and to economizing the time and energy of the teacher. The subject matter for composition, both oral and written, has been carefully chosen with the design of securing interest, for much experience has convinced the writer that the value of such work is in exact proportion to the zest with which it is carried on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supervised Study in English: For Junior High School Grades This book is intended to illustrate a technic for the treatment of the English lesson in Junior High Schools where the lengthened period of sixty, seventy, or eighty minutes prevails. It is a sane conclusion that the work of the school should be confined to school hours. To use the evening hours of children for the preparation of lessons is to overemphasize the importance of "schooling" and to discount those equally educative influences which come from the social contacts of home, church, and community. Enriched courses of study demand the longer school day, but a due regard for the normal development of children demands that time allotments within the longer day shall be so carefully made, and efficient methods of study so commonly practiced, that the day's work can be effectively accomplished within the school. The margin between the hours of work and the hours of sleep is one rich in possibilities for the broad, well-rounded development of the individual. The school must undoubtedly assume responsibility for such "avocational guidance" as will lead to the worthy use of leisure time; but the mere assignment of tasks is an encroachment upon it which should be steadily resisted. No attempt has been made in this book to outline a course of study in English although certain evaluating principles underlying the selection of topics for emphasis have been indicated.
