Book excerpt: JUNGLE COMICS #100The main character associated with the title is Kaanga. He appeared in every issue of Jungle Comics. When Kaanga was a child his parents died in the jungle and he was raised by apes. The reader never gets to know his real name or his ancestry, but the jungle is where Kaanga feels most at home. In the first issue Kaanga meets his mate Ann, who is a Jane clone, after he rescues her from a white slave trader named Bill Blackton. Ann then joins Kaanga in his jungle existence. After nearly ten years Kaanga was given his own title in Spring, 1949. This ran for 20 issues until the Summer of 1954. One of the reasons for the series demise was the formation of The Comics Code Authority, a self-regulatory body that was formed because of moral concerns about the contents of many of the comics of the time. As much of Fiction House's material involved images of scantily clad women they withdrew from the market. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created an unprecedented string of classic comic book heroes. Quite possibly the most iconic of them all was the high-tech king of Wakanda, The Black Panther. When the Panther began his own solo series, Don McGregor strove to meet Lee and Kirby's high standard with "Panther's Rage." It was an epic adventure so huge it ranged across the savannah, into the deepest jungles and up snow-topped mountains. Over its course, McGregor would explore and expand the life and culture of Wakanda and their African kingdom in compelling detail. COLLECTING: VOL. 1; FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) 52-53, JUNGLE ACTION (1972) 6-24.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Isle of Kipling has known war between the animal tribes for generations. But when a pirate ship crashed to the island shore, the arrival of four infant survivors was deemed an omen to signify the end of the war. Divided up between the tribes in a fragile act of peace, the four children grew up separate form one another, not knowing of one another's existence. But years later, a simple run through the jungle for Mowglii and her adopted mother wolf accidently disrupted the peace. And eventually Mowglii's mother wolf was murdered by the ferocious tigher, Shere Kahn. As a result, Mowglii finally achieved vegenance by killing Shere Khan. Although Mowglii's act may have quenched her thirst for revenge, it has rekindled the fires of war. Now, the borders between the animal tribes are shattered, the jungle is unsettled, and war on Kipling Isle looms on the horizon.

Book excerpt: The Penguin Classics Marvel Collection presents the origin stories, seminal tales, and characters of the Marvel Universe to explore Marvel’s transformative and timeless influence on an entire genre of fantasy. A Penguin Classics Marvel Collection Edition Collects Fantastic Four #52-53 (1966); Jungle Action #6-21 (1973-1976). It is impossible to imagine American popular culture without Marvel Comics. For decades, Marvel has published groundbreaking visual narratives that sustain attention on multiple levels: as metaphors for the experience of difference and otherness; as meditations on the fluid nature of identity; and as high-water marks in the artistic tradition of American cartooning, to name a few. The Black Panther is not just a super hero; as King T’Challa, he is also the monarch of the hidden African nation of Wakanda. Combining the strength and stealth of his namesake with a creative scientific intelligence, the Black Panther is an icon of Afro-futurist fantasy. This new anthology includes the Black Panther’s 1966 origin tale and the entirety of the critically acclaimed “Panther’s Rage” storyline from his 1970s solo series. A foreword by Nnedi Okorafor, a scholarly introduction and apparatus by Qiana J. Whitted, and a general series introduction by Ben Saunders offer further insight into the enduring significance of Black Panther and classic Marvel comics. The Penguin Classics black spine paperback features full-color art throughout.
