Book excerpt: Urbanity and city life as reflected in the mirror of contemporary art. This extensive publication documents new works acquired for the Julia Stoschek Collection in recent years as well as site-specific interventions in its exhibition space. Rather than a thematic concept, the forty-four works by thirty-five artists follow various content-related threads that reflect topical themes of contemporary art. The title, Cities of Gold and Mirrors, not only refers to the film by Cyprien Gaillard, but is also a metaphor for a confrontation with sociopolitical questions concerning urban development and urbanism, along with the relationship between human beings and architecture as well as their personal desires and vanities. Featuring works by Francis Alÿs, Olafur Eliasson, Cyprien Gaillard, Andreas Gursky, Nancy Holt, Mark Manders, Gordon Matta-Clark, Robin Rhode, Christoph Schlingensief, Wolfgang Tillmans, Andro Wekua, Christoph Westermeier, Tobias Zielony, and many others.

Book excerpt: 'Destroy, She Said' was the title of the first exhibition in the Julia Stoschek Collection, the opening of which prompted a great deal of media coverage last summer in Düsseldorf. One of the show's distinctive features was that the exhibition spaces were made to measure for a total of forty artistic positions by the Berlin architects Kühn Malvezzi, thus demonstrating the potential for the presentation of contemporary media-supported art. This volume documents the exhibition and its remarkable architectural concept. All of the works - by artists such as Doug Aitken, Paul Chan, Robert Smithson, Monica Bonvicini, Natasha Sadr Hagidhian, Dara Birnbaum, Klara Liden, and Olafur Eliasson - are presented in texts and illustrations and situated in the larger context of this exquisite private collection. The book is completed by Daniel Birnbaum's essay on current time-based art and crucial aspects of selected works from the Julia Stoschek Collection as well as by Kaye Geipel's text dealing with the history and architecture of the century-old industrial building--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Private Collector’s Museum connects the rising popularity of private museums with evolving models of collecting and philanthropy, and new inter-relationships between private and public space. It examines how contemporary collectors construct museums to frame themselves as cultural arbiters of global distinction. By exploring a range of in-depth contemporary case studies, the book aims for a more complex understanding of the private collector’s museum, assessing how it is realised, funded and understood in a broader cultural context. It examines the ways in which this particular museum model has evolved within a historical Western tradition of collecting and museum-building, and considers how private museums will endure alongside their public counterparts. It also sheds light on the shifting patterns of collecting, such as the transition of personal art collections into the public sphere. The developments are situated within the wider context of private–public engagement in general. Providing a new analysis of philanthropy, public access and the museum, The Private Collector’s Museum is essential reading for scholars and students interested in the private museum, and key reading for those interested in related issues.

Book excerpt: Across three decades the American artist and cinematographer, Arthur Jafa (b. 1960, Tupelo, USA) has developed a dynamic, multidisciplinary practice ranging from films and installations to lecture-performances and happenings that tackle, challenge and question prevailing cultural assumptions about identity and race.Jafa's work is driven by a recurrent question: how might one identify and develop a specifically Black visual aesthetics equal to the 'power, beauty and alienation' of Black music in American culture?Building upon Jafa's image-based practice, this enormous new volume comprises a series of visual sequences that are cut and juxtaposed across its pages. The artist has been collecting and working from a set of source books since the 1990s, seeking to trace and map unwritten histories and narratives relating to black life.Punctuating this visual material is a series of commissioned texts partnered with a rich compendium of essays, short stories and poetry that has informed Jafa's artistic practice and which together form an unprecedented resource. With over 30 contributors including: art critic Dave Hickey, philosopher and gender theorist Judith Butler, award-winning British artist John Akomfrah, and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Hilton Als.Published after the exhibition, Arthur Jafa: A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions at Serpentine Galleries, London (8 June - 10 September 2017), and at the Julia Stoschek Collection, Berlin (11 February - 25 November 2018).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great, innovative and restless thinker, the young Humboldt (1769-1859) went on his epochal journey to the New World during a time of revolutionary ferment across Europe. This part of his matchless narrative of adventure and scientific research focuses on his time in Venezuela - in the Llanos and on the Orinoco River - riding and paddling, restlessly and happily noting the extraordinary things on every hand. Great Journeys allows readers to travel both around the planet and back through the centuries – but also back into ideas and worlds frightening, ruthless and cruel in different ways from our own. Few reading experiences can begin to match that of engaging with writers who saw astounding things: Great civilisations, walls of ice, violent and implacable jungles, deserts and mountains, multitudes of birds and flowers new to science. Reading these books is to see the world afresh, to rediscover a time when many cultures were quite strange to each other, where legends and stories were treated as facts and in which so much was still to be discovered.

Book excerpt: Diaries of an avatar: a Bible-style artist's book of writings by Martine Syms A new artist's book by California-based artist Martine Syms (born 1988), Shame Space explores the possibilities of narrative and identity, collecting journal writings by the artist from 2015 to 2017 in which she attempts to capture her shadow self, alongside image stills from the video project Ugly Plymouths. The text entries form the voiceover of Mythiccbeing (pronounced "my thick being'), a "black, upwardly mobile, violent, solipsistic, sociopathic, gender-neutral femme" digital avatar who has iterated across several of Syms' recent exhibitions. In Syms' installations, Mythiccbeing manifests variously in video, audio and as an interactive chatbot that responds to the viewer's communications with messages and animations. In Shame Space, the character's autofictional, diaristic commentary is gathered into 15 chapters. Its design updates the Bible format with its A5 size, embossed leather-textured cover and silver edge painting. The Ugly Plymouths still-image selection was coded using a programming script, such that the design, like the chatbot's SMS responses, is an exercise in machine automation.

Book excerpt: Emotions Go To Work is an investigation into how technology is used to turn our feelings into valuable assets. One might call it the transformation of emotion into capital. It asks what is at stake in our relationship with the companions we call smart objects? What does the future hold in store for a world where people are treated more and more like things, while the billions of gadgets that make up the Internet of Things are increasingly anthropomorphized, granted agency? Spanning an arc of time from the 18th century to 21st century and beyond, Emotions Go To Work traces the codification and instrumentalization emotional data in ways both playful and serious. It considers the role emojis play our mental life and their potential to evolve and grow monstrous. It suggests that anthropomorphized technological creatures from early cartoons might inspire a utopian society. Proposing that the first step to re-wiring our world is to picture possibilities in games and in play, in dreams and in far-fetched fictions, so that we can begin new conversations between people and things. Hand printed 5 color Risograph artist book with two pullout pages, printed in a limited edition of 200 copies.

Book excerpt: This generously illustrated book offers the first comprehensive overview of the work of the Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist Francis Stark. Frances Stark deftly deploys text, image, and literary sources in her drawings, collages, paintings, and video works that reflect on her roles as artist, mother, woman, and teacher. Throughout her career she has experimented with alternative modes of expression, as in her critically acclaimed video My Best Thing; her PowerPoint work Structures that fit my opening (and other parts considered in relation to their whole); and the performance Put a Song in Your Thing. Companion to an exhibition that documents Stark's 25-year long career, this book contains 125 works in which Stark employs words and images to create provocative and self-referential works that speak to the complexities of daily life. This book includes fullpage detailed images that provide an insight into the highly tactile and complex nature of Stark's work. Also included are newly commissioned essays, and a collection of brief reflections by a variety of prominent artists and writers whom Stark asked to revisit specific topics they've discussed or written about previously. Filled with high-quality reproductions and thoughtful commentary, this book is the definitive resource on Stark's accomplished, varied, and affecting body of work.

Book excerpt: Every three years the curators of New York's International Center of Photography gather the most interesting contemporary photography and video from around the world to explore a specific issue, trend, or movement. Past Triennials have focused on themes of identity, environmentalism and fashion. The 2013 Triennial, A Different Kind of Order, presents a variety of artworks that illuminate the new visual and social territory in which photography operates today. Created by 27 international artists, these works--photographs, films, videos, installations, performances and other media--reflect the growing influence of new paradigms associated with digital image making and networking. Approximately 225 images by artists such as A. K. Burns, Thomas Hirschhorn, Gideon Mendel, Lisa Oppenheim, Rabih Mroue, and Walid Raad are accompanied by illuminating critical texts as well as wider-ranging thematic essays by ICP curators Kristin Lubben, Joanna Lehan, Christopher Phillips and Carol Squiers. AUTHOR: Joanna Lehan is a curator at the ICP. Kristen Lubben is a curator and associate director of exhibitions at the ICP. Christopher Phillips is a curator at the ICP. Carol Squiers is a curator at the ICP. SELLING POINTS: Highlighting the increasing overlay of networked reality onto the human experience of the world, this volume identifies some of the new types of imagery that are beginning to coalesce into a 21st-century digital vernacular.
