Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a little majorette from Vendée who, starting from nothing, juggled two sticks, then three, then seven, and became world juggling champion in Las Vegas. It's also the story of a child, then an abused woman, who clings to this art with such strength and virtuosity that she goes on to work non-stop in the world's greatest cabarets. Shy, solitary and trapped in an unbearable sense of unease, Françoise flings her sticks before the astonished eyes of the audience in order to fight the demons rumbling inside her. Françoise's absolute desire to live and transcend her wounds lead her to forgive her rapists. For her, only two goals mattered: to live at peace with herself and to give herself the chance to meet her soulmate. Her exceptional testimony speaks of a path that it is possible to take after having lived through the worst. Perseverance, overcoming and rebuilding are all avenues of hope for those who, from an early age, have suffered unbearable violence and, with unsuspected courage, have always refused to let themselves be trapped in it. Listed in the Guinness Book of Records, Françoise Rochais has performed in over five thousand shows worldwide. She has won numerous awards, including the most prestigious competitions: the Festival international du cirque de Monte-Carlo (2020) and the Festival mondial du cirque de demain in Paris.

Book excerpt: The Death of Life dissects biology's claim to be the Cinderella science that rose above its station. Early attempts to study life through observation, experiment and theory are exposed as the skeleton of ideas for controlling life, ideas which were only fleshed out by the biotech and genomic industries. Physicists- and chemists-turned biologists in alliance with biology's own eugenicists are shown to have abandoned the study of life and suppressed poststructuralist approaches ranging from neoLamarckism to biogeological/Gaia theory.

Download or read book Academic Global Surgery written by Mamta Swaroop and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-17 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seventh book in the series of Success in Academic Surgery look to sustain the field and facilitate the next generation of leaders in Academic Global Surgery. It brings together a catalogue of current knowledge, needs, and pathways to a career in the field. Academic Global Surgery involves educational, research and clinical collaborations between academic humanitarian surgeons in high-income countries (HIC), their low and middle-income country (LMIC) partners and their respective academic institutions. The goal of these collaborations is improving understanding of surgical disease, and increasing access to and capacity for surgical care in resource-poor regions. In the last few years, the rapid exchange of ideas through social media and other technologies has combined with an increasing appreciation of worldwide health disparities to put the issue of global health at the forefront of our consciousness. Although traditionally neglected within public health initiatives, surgical disease is now recognized as a major contributor to death and disability worldwide, while surgical therapy in resource-poor areas is increasingly being shown to be cost-effective. In response to this growing recognition, what began as mission trips and short-term clinical volunteerism in the developing world has evolved into a burgeoning new field with a broader scope. While the tremendous recent interest from medical students and residents in Globa l Surgery has stimulated an exponential growth of interest in this field, current surgical literature has highlighted the need for further development and delineation of this new discipline within academic surgery.

Book excerpt: Ingenuity in the Making explores the myriad ways in which ingenuity shaped the experience and conceptualization of materials and their manipulation in early modern Europe. Contributions range widely across the arts and sciences, examining objects and texts, professions and performances, concepts and practices. The book considers subjects such as spirited matter, the conceits of nature, and crafty devices, investigating the ways in which ingenuity acted in and upon the material world through skill and technique. Contributors ask how ingenuity informed the “maker’s knowledge” tradition, where the perilous borderline between the genius of invention and disingenuous fraud was drawn, charting the ambitions of material ingenuity in a rapidly globalizing world.

Book Synopsis Zen and Confucius in the Art of Swordsmanship by : Reinhard Kammer
Download or read book Zen and Confucius in the Art of Swordsmanship written by Reinhard Kammer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sword has played an important role in the Japanese consciousness since ancient times. The earliest swords, made of bronze or stone, were clearly, by their design and form, used for ritualistic purposes rather than as weapons. Later, swords were associated only with the warrior class, and lack of physical strength and battle experience was compensated for by handling the sword in a way that was technically expert. Besides this sacred and artistic status, swordsmanship also acquired a philosophical reinforcement, which ultimately made it one of the Zen ‘ways’. Zen Buddhism related the correct practice of swordsmanship to exercises for attaining enlightenment and selfishness, while Confucianism, emphasizing the ethical meaning, equated it to service to the state. This classic text, first published in English in 1978, includes a history of the development and an interpretation of Japanese swordsmanship, now esteemed as an art and honoured as a national heritage. It describes in detail the long, intensive and specialized training and etiquette involved, emphasizing and explaining the importance of both Zen and Confucian ideas and beliefs.
