Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The idea of a Jewish Church has been banned from the Christian horizon for almost two millennia. But things are changing. Since the middle of the 70s the Messianic Jewish movement has strived to build an ecclesial home for all Jewish believers in Christ. This new phenomenon brings to life issues that had disappeared since the first centuries of the Church. What does it mean to be a Jew in the Church? Should there be a distinction between Jews and non-Jews among believers in Christ? Is such a distinction compatible with the unity of the whole Body of Christ so ardently preached by Paul? What lifestyle should this Church promote? In his various works, Mark Kinzer, a prominent Messianic Jewish theologian, has attempted to provide substantial answers to these questions. Antoine Lévy is a Dominican priest. With Kinzer, Lévy has launched the “Helsinki Consultation”, a cross-denominational gathering of Jewish theologians. In Jewish Church: A Catholic Approach to Messianic Judaism, Lévy examines Kinzer’s positions critically, bringing forward an alternative vision of what a “Jewish Church” could and should be. This is only the beginning of what promises to be a fascinating discussion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Messianism is one of the great themes in intellectual history. But because it has done so much important ideological work for the people who have written about it, the historical roots of the discourse have been obscured from view. What did it mean to talk about "messiahs" in the ancient world, before the idea of messianism became a philosophical juggernaut, dictating the terms for all subsequent discussion of the topic? In this book, Matthew V. Novenson offers a revisionist account of messianism in antiquity. He shows that, for the ancient Jews and Christians who used the term, a messiah was not an article of faith but a manner of speaking. It was a scriptural figure of speech, one among numerous others, useful for thinking about kinds of political order: present or future, real or ideal, monarchic or theocratic, dynastic or charismatic, and other variations besides. The early Christians famously seized upon the title "messiah" (in Greek, "Christ") for their founding hero and molded the sense of the term in certain ways; but, Novenson shows, this is just what all ancient messiah texts do, each in its own way. If we hope to understand the ancient texts about messiahs (from Deutero-Isaiah to the Parables of Enoch, from the Qumran Community Rule to the Gospel of John, from the Pseudo-Clementines to Sefer Zerubbabel), we must learn to think not in terms of a world-historical idea but of a language game, of so many creative reuses of an archaic Israelite idiom. In The Grammar of Messianism, Novenson demonstrates the possibility and the benefit of thinking of messianism in this way.

Book excerpt: Jesus was a Jew. The writers of Scripture were Jews. The early church emerged in a Jewish environment. So why the tension between Jews and Christians, and why have so few Jews come to believe in the Messiah? In "The Fig Tree Blossoms, "Paul Liberman uncovers the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and helps Gentile believers come to a deeper understanding of the historic issues that have fed Jewish suspicion of Christians and Christian prejudice toward Jews. But in these last days, Liberman writes, God is using the emerging Messianic movement to bring many Jews into His kingdom and to awaken Gentile Christians to their Jewish faith heritage. Instead of casting blame or assigning guilt, Liberman calls Gentile Christians to embrace their Messianic brothers' and sisters' Jewish expressions of faith in much the same way Paul encouraged his fellow Jews to embrace Gentile believers who were entering the first century church. Discover how the "fig tree"--the biblical symbol for the Jewish people--is blossoming, and how many will come to enjoy its fruit. Paul Liberman became a believer in the Messiah in 1971. He was instrumental in founding Messianic congregations in Washington, D.C., and San Diego and co-led a congregation in Israel. For five years, he served as the Executive Director of the International Messianic Jewish Alliance and is currently Publisher of "The Messianic Times "newspaper, a board member of MAOZ, Inc. (Israel), and President of the Messianic Jewish Alliance of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How does a Jewish person in the 21st century explore the question of whether Yeshua (Jesus) is the Messiah of Israel? And if a Jew has an epiphany through a dream or experience that Yeshua is the Son of God, what next? What are the first steps to follow Him who said, "Follow me"? In Derech Yeshua, Daniel Nessim provides responsible answers to these questions from the Hebrew Scriptures and New Testament, and in a way that affirm unequivocally that Jews who embrace Yeshua as the Son of David, the Moshiach of Israel, are called by God to remain Jews and not leave behind their Judaism. This book is a must-read for all fellow members of the tribe who want to know more about Jesus." --David Rudolph, PhD, Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, The King's University "This is an excellent contribution to the work of communicating the Good News of Messiah to our people. I appreciated the organization of the writing -- logical and easily understood. I enjoyed Daniel's writing style -- compassionate and compelling. The content is truly 'evidence that demands a verdict' from our community to the greater Jewish community." --Sam Nadler, President, Word of Messiah Ministries "I highly recommend this informative, thoughtful and well-organized approach to Jewish evangelism and the discipleship of Jewish people who come to faith in Yeshua. Daniel Nessim has tremendous personal experience in the field of Jewish missions and this experience shows throughout Derech Yeshua. I pray that many Jewish people will find themselves traveling further down the path towards a personal relationship with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob through the Messiah Jesus after reading this excellent book. I also highly recommend this volume as a toll to be used by non-Jewish believers who want to share the good news with Jewish friends and to help them grow in the lord." --Mitch Glaser, President, Chosen People Ministries
