This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion offers a compelling survey of American literature in the 1930s. These thirteen new essays by accomplished scholars in the field provide re-examinations of crucial trends in the decade: the rise of the proletarian novel; the intersection of radical politics and experimental aesthetics; the documentary turn; the rise of left-wing theatres; popular fictional genres; the impact of Marxist thought on African-American historical writing; the relation of modernist prose to mass entertainment. Placing such issues in their political and economic contexts, this Companion constitutes an excellent introduction to a vital area of critical and scholarly inquiry. This collection also functions as a valuable reference guide to Depression-era cultural practice, furnishing readers with a chronology of important historical events in the decade and crucial publication dates, as well as a wide-ranging bibliography for those interested in reading further into the field.

Book Synopsis Music in Colonial Punjab by : Radha Kapuria
Download or read book Music in Colonial Punjab written by Radha Kapuria and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first social history of music in undivided Punjab (1800-1947), beginning at the Lahore court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and concluding at the Patiala royal darbar. It unearths new evidence for the centrality of female performers and classical music in a region primarily viewed as a folk music centre, featuring a range of musicians and dancers -from 'mirasis' (bards) and 'kalawants' (elite musicians), to 'kanjris' (subaltern female performers) and 'tawaifs' (courtesans). A central theme is the rise of new musical publics shaped by the anglicized Punjabi middle classes, and British colonialists' response to Punjab's performing communities. The book reveals a diverse connoisseurship for music with insights from history, ethnomusicology, and geography on an activity that still unites a region now divided between India and Pakistan.

Book Synopsis The Rise to Respectability by : Calvin White
Download or read book The Rise to Respectability written by Calvin White and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise to Respectability documents the history of the Church of God in Christ (COGIC) and examines its cultural and religious impact on African Americans and on the history of the South. It explores the ways in which Charles Harrison Mason, the son of slaves and founder of COGIC, embraced a Pentecostal faith that celebrated the charismatic forms of religious expression that many blacks had come to view as outdated, unsophisticated, and embarrassing. While examining the intersection of race, religion, and class, The Rise to Respectability details how the denomination dealt with the stringent standard of bourgeois behavior imposed on churchgoers as they moved from southern rural areas into the urban centers in both the South and North. Rooted in the hardships of slavery and coming of age during Jim Crow, COGIC’s story is more than a religious debate. Rather, this book sees the history of the church as interwoven with the Great Migration, class tension, racial animosity, and the struggle for modernity—all representative parts of the African American experience.

Book Synopsis British Capital, Antipodean Labour by : Anna Green
Download or read book British Capital, Antipodean Labour written by Anna Green and published by Otago University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about work on the New Zealand waterfront in the first half of the twentieth century. With a small domestic market, the country depended for its wealth on trade with the rest of the world. That trade relied on the carriage of goods by sea and so the ports played a vital role in the nation's economy, and in the nation's labour relations. A series of bitter labour disputes arose out of the differing goals of shipping companies and waterside workers, culminating in 1951. Based on oral histories with both former employers and workers, this is the first book to take the long view on the processes of work on the waterfront, considering the organisation of labour and the ownership of the industry. It is especially relevant as the old issues, including insecurity of employment and intensified hours of work, resurface.
