Book excerpt: Juan Moreira is presented as a bilingual, Spanish/English book, with side-by-side texts. Juan Moreira is a classic gaucho novel by the Argentine writer Eduardo Guti�rrez, published as a serial history between November 1879 and January 1880 in the newspaper La Patria Argentina. It is inspired by a real police chronicle starring the legendary gaucho Juan Moreira, who was killed by the police in Lobos, in 1874. It is one of the most important texts of Argentine literature and Hispano-American romanticism. As far as I know, there is only one other English translation of this book, made by John Charles Chasteen and published by Hackett under the title El Gaucho Juan Moreira. This translation is very different from Chasteen's, since instead of shortening and adapting the text to make it more pleasing to the English reader, my goal was to keep this translation as close as possible to the original, without sacrificing its legibility. Some words couldn't be translated properly, because there are not English words for them, in such cases the Spanish word was left as it was, but we explain its meaning in the Glossary and/or in footnotes. All words included in the Glossary are underlined. I hope this bilingual translation can help English readers to understand better this classic work of the Latin-American literature. Also this book is useful for students of Spanish, to learn Spanish through reading, since the side-by-side presentation of the Spanish and English texts, makes it easy following the original Spanish text. Book excerpt: In her study of key radio dramas broadcast from 1930 to 1943, Lauren Rea analyses the work of leading exponents of the genre against the wider backdrop of nation-building, intellectual movements and popular culture in Argentina. During the period that has come to be known as the infamous decade, radio serials drew on the Argentine literary canon, with writers such as Héctor Pedro Blomberg and José Andrés González Pulido contributing to the nation-building project as they reinterpreted nineteenth-century Argentina and repackaged it for a 1930s mass audience. Thus, a historical romance set in the tumultuous dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas reveals the conflict between the message transmitted to a mass audience through popular radio drama and the work of historical revisionist intellectuals writing in the 1930s. Transmitted at the same time, González Pulido’s gauchesque series evokes powerful notions of Argentine national identity as it explores the relationship of the gaucho with Argentina’s immigrant population and advocates for the ideal contribution of women and the immigrant population to Argentine nationhood. Rea grounds her study in archival work undertaken at the library of Argentores in Buenos Aires, which holds the only surviving collection of scripts of radio serials from the period. Rea’s book recovers the contribution that these products of popular culture made to the nation-building project as they helped to shape and promote the understanding of Argentine history and cultural identity that is widely held today.

Even contemporary actors of violence are framed by narratives that harken back to old images of the rural bandit, either to legitimize or delegitimize violence, or to intervene in larger conflicts within or between nation-states. However, the bandit escapes a straightforward definition, since the same label can apply to the leader of thousands of soldiers (as in the case of Villa) or to the humble highwayman eking out a meager living by waylaying travelers at machete point. Dabove presents the reader not with a definition of the bandit, but with a series of case studies showing how the bandit trope was used in fictional and non-fictional narratives by writers and political leaders, from the Mexican Revolution to the present. By examining cases from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, from Pancho Villa’s autobiography to Hugo Chávez’s appropriation of his “outlaw” grandfather, Dabove reveals how bandits function as a symbol to expose the dilemmas or aspirations of cultural and political practices, including literature as a social practice and as an ethical experience.
