Book excerpt: Stories From My Career is a compilation of 50 illustrated stories about the author's career as a college professor and media practitioner. Her career began in the 1960s when very few women were employed in either area and spanned six decades until her retirement. The initial stories take place in Pittsburgh, where she grew up, and Chicago, where she went to college, but most of the stories are centered in the Los Angeles area. A fair number also take place in other countries where she taught and consulted. The stories encompass topics such as combining career and family, the evolution of electronic technology, the civil rights movement, maternity leave practices, television production techniques, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, beginnings of cable TV, teaching challenges, media functions in developing nations, and career advice.

Book Synopsis Inventing Film Studies by : Lee Grieveson
Download or read book Inventing Film Studies written by Lee Grieveson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-24 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing Film Studies offers original and provocative insights into the institutional and intellectual foundations of cinema studies. Many scholars have linked the origins of the discipline to late-1960s developments in the academy such as structuralist theory and student protest. Yet this collection reveals the broader material and institutional forces—both inside and outside of the university—that have long shaped the field. Beginning with the first investigations of cinema in the early twentieth century, this volume provides detailed examinations of the varied social, political, and intellectual milieus in which knowledge of cinema has been generated. The contributors explain how multiple instantiations of film study have had a tremendous influence on the methodologies, curricula, modes of publication, and professional organizations that now constitute the university-based discipline. Extending the historical insights into the present, contributors also consider the directions film study might take in changing technological and cultural environments. Inventing Film Studies shows how the study of cinema has developed in relation to a constellation of institutions, technologies, practices, individuals, films, books, government agencies, pedagogies, and theories. Contributors illuminate the connections between early cinema and the social sciences, between film programs and nation-building efforts, and between universities and U.S. avant-garde filmmakers. They analyze the evolution of film studies in relation to the Museum of Modern Art, the American Film Council movement of the 1940s and 1950s, the British Film Institute, influential journals, cinephilia, and technological innovations past and present. Taken together, the essays in this collection reveal the rich history and contemporary vitality of film studies. Contributors: Charles R. Acland, Mark Lynn Anderson, Mark Betz, Zoë Druick, Lee Grieveson, Stephen Groening, Haden Guest, Amelie Hastie, Lynne Joyrich, Laura Mulvey, Dana Polan, D. N. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mesoscopic domain encompasses structures that are best described in terms of the time and length scales which lie between the two extremes of the molecular and the phenomenological description of materials. Important examples of such structures are self-assemblies, emulsions, gels, colloids aggregates and macromolecules networks. Discussing the key advances made in recent years in our understanding of both equilibrium and dynamic aspects of mesoscopic structures, most talks at the conference were given by world class researchers in the field, who included, among others, Prof J S Higgins, CBE, FRS (Imperial College, London), Prof D Frenkel (FOM, Amsterdam), Prof M E Cates (Edinburgh), Prof R C Ball (Warwick), Prof S Ramaswamy (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore), Prof R Pandit (Bangalore), Dr J A Yeomans (Oxford), Prof S Puri (JNU, New Delhi), Dr D Langevin (CRPP, Bordeaux), and Prof W G M Agterof (Unilever Research, Vlaardingen).

Book Synopsis Tale Of Discrete Mathematics, A: A Journey Through Logic, Reasoning, Structures And Graph Theory by : Joseph Khoury
Download or read book Tale Of Discrete Mathematics, A: A Journey Through Logic, Reasoning, Structures And Graph Theory written by Joseph Khoury and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics covered in Discrete Mathematics have become essential tools in many areas of studies in recent years. This is primarily due to the revolution in technology, communications, and cyber security. The book treats major themes in a typical introductory modern Discrete Mathematics course: Propositional and predicate logic, proof techniques, set theory (including Boolean algebra, functions and relations), introduction to number theory, combinatorics and graph theory. An accessible, precise, and comprehensive approach is adopted in the treatment of each topic. The ability of abstract thinking and the art of writing valid arguments are emphasized through detailed proof of (almost) every result. Developing the ability to think abstractly and roguishly is key in any areas of science, information technology and engineering. Every result presented in the book is followed by examples and applications to consolidate its comprehension. The hope is that the reader ends up developing both the abstract reasoning as well as acquiring practical skills. All efforts are made to write the book at a level accessible to first-year students and to present each topic in a way that facilitates self-directed learning. Each chapter starts with basic concepts of the subject at hand and progresses gradually to cover more ground on the subject. Chapters are divided into sections and subsections to facilitate readings. Each section ends with its own carefully chosen set of practice exercises to reenforce comprehension and to challenge and stimulate readers. As an introduction to Discrete Mathematics, the book is written with the smallest set of prerequisites possible. Familiarity with basic mathematical concepts (usually acquired in high school) is sufficient for most chapters. However, some mathematical maturity comes in handy to grasp some harder concepts presented in the book.
