Book excerpt: “Paul Tran’s debut collection of poems is indelible, this remarkable voice transforming itself as you read, eventually transforming you.” —Alexander Chee, author of How to Write an Autobiographical Novel “This powerful debut marshals narrative lyrics and stark beauty to address personal and political violence.” —New York Times Book Review A profound meditation on physical, emotional, and psychological transformation in the aftermath of imperial violence and interpersonal abuse, from a poet both “tender and unflinching” (Khadijah Queen) Visceral and astonishing, Paul Tran's debut poetry collection All the Flowers Kneeling investigates intergenerational trauma, sexual violence, and U.S. imperialism in order to radically alter our understanding of freedom, power, and control. In poems of desire, gender, bodies, legacies, and imagined futures, Tran’s poems elucidate the complex and harrowing processes of reckoning and recovery, enhanced by innovative poetic forms that mirror the nonlinear emotional and psychological experiences of trauma survivors. At once grand and intimate, commanding and deeply vulnerable, All the Flowers Kneeling revels in rediscovering and reconfiguring the self, and ultimately becomes an essential testament to the human capacity for resilience, endurance, and love.

Book excerpt: Warning: This book contains subject matter and language that is not suitable for children or those who do not understand just how dark and foreboding the human heart can become. Jesus did not come to call the righteous, but sinners; But go and learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. Matthew 9:13 this is the testimony of one such sinner. This is a poetic journey from darkness to light, a journey that has been a lifetime in the making. A journey that would not be possible without the Lord Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Poetic Journey: From Darkness into the Light," is a compilation of poems written over several years. This compilation provides an insight on personal understanding, a positive growth mindset, self-discovery, and acceptance, as I traversed through a multitude of chronic co-morbidities and health concerns. Each poem offers a glimpse into the emotions, thoughts, actions, and life situations experienced in my own journey. As with so many facets of life, there will always be a hurdle to overcome, a challenge to work through, or a mountain to climb. Throughout my personal experiences, I have gathered an understanding that when we lift the limitations that both society and we have placed on ourselves, we are able to move forward more freely. This mindset has forever impacted the ways in which I perceive the roads through life. Although health diagnoses are life altering, it is truly how each person chooses to work through them and arrive to the other side of either healing or a deeper understanding. These poems range from birth to death, from diagnosis' to healing, from confusion to understanding, from sighted to blind, from fixed mindset to a growth mindset, from despair to hope, and from darkness into light. I share these poems with light and love, with the desire to contribute a form of hope and even insight for those who may have or may currently be traveling a challenging road in life. My wish is that each person who reads these poems realize that they do not need to travel their road alone, and that there is in fact others in the community and world who care and understand. My dream is that those who read these poems may find a sense of connection with my writing, as well as feelings of peace, comfort and contentment as they continue to move forward in life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For All of Us, One Today is a fluid, poetic story anchored by Richard Blanco’s experiences as the inaugural poet in 2013, and beyond. In this brief and evocative narrative, he shares for the first time his journey as a Latino immigrant and openly gay man discovering a new, emotional understanding of what it means to be an American. He tells the story of the call from the White House committee and all the exhilaration and upheaval of the days that followed. He reveals the inspiration and challenges behind the creation of the inaugural poem, “One Today,” as well as two other poems commissioned for the occasion (“Mother Country” and “What We Know of Country”), published here for the first time ever, alongside translations of all three of those poems into his native Spanish. Finally, Blanco reflects on his life-changing role as a public voice since the inauguration, his spiritual embrace of Americans everywhere, and his vision for poetry’s new role in our nation’s consciousness. Like the inaugural poem itself, For All of Us, One Today speaks to what makes this country and its people great, marking a historic moment of hope and promise in our evolving American landscape. In 2017, U2 is featuring “One Today” during their Joshua Tree tour throughout the United States and Europe. The poem will be projected on the stage screens as people enter the stadium to reflect and discuss America and the American experience. 2014 International Latino Awards Winner: Best Biography – Spanish or Bilingual

A bit of observation of experiences. Seen and unseen. The road to salvation is indeed a narrow one. Matthew 7: 14aaBecause straight is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.a (KJV) As Jesus tells us in Matthew 24: 42, aWatch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.a Matthew 24: 44aaTherefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.a (KJV) Check your mortality before you get to that box. Are you ready?

Discover that the similarities in our lives are greater than the differences. Though our circumstances may seem to be poles apart, I invite you to look closely with me at our shared humanity and recognise that the themes underlying our many stories are vastly similar. Life is a carnival, and we are the mask wearers. From the everyday to the ethereal, from the mundane to the mystical, you will find yourself, somewhere, in this collection of poetry. I have been using poetry as a personal means of self-expression. For many years, it has helped me through dark moments of depression and through periods of deep questioning in my life. It has allowed me to access deeper and deeper levels of myself and connect with the inspiration that has been the driving force behind much of my poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes an audio CD of the author reading! For nearly four decades, Juan Felipe Herrera has documented his experience as a Chicano in the United States and Latin America through stunning, memorable poetry that is both personal and universal in its impact, themes, and approach. Often political, never fainthearted, his career has been marked by tremendous virtuosity and a unique sensibility for uncovering the unknown and the unexpected. Through a variety of stages and transformations, Herrera has evolved more than almost any other Chicano poet, always re-inventing himself into a more mature and seasoned voice. Now, in this unprecedented collection, we encounter the trajectory of this highly innovative and original writer, bringing the full scope of his singular vision into view. Beginning with early material from A Certain Man and moving through thirteen of his collections into new, previously unpublished work, this assemblage also includes an audio CD of the author reading twenty-four selected poems aloud. Serious scholars and readers alike will now have available to them a representative set of glimpses into his production as well as his origins and personal development. The ultimate value of bringing together such a collection, however, is that it will allow us to better understand and appreciate the complexity of what this major American poet is all about.

Book excerpt: Book of Life: Poems for the Journey is a book of poetry that tells a story—a human story and a divine story. Many themes are visited, including writing, creativity, nature, relationships, loving ourselves, purpose, surrender, soul, change, grief, awakening, empowerment, and more. The poems showed up as the poet stepped into a life that allowed room for them. Difficult decisions were made so as to keep the pen from running dry. Grief and growing pains made way for risk, newness, adventure, and spontaneity, and these things subsequently made for something to write about. The writings are fueled by the poet’s fire and are intended to light the divine spark within the reader. Often, the poems show up as a pondering and then come full circle to a resolution of sorts, one that can potentially serve us all as we journey, always, Home.

If you want to know the Friend, don’t expect elegant arguments! Demand a blessing from one who gives you joy.” —Hafiz (tr. Barks) “Hafiz is without peer!” exclaimed Goethe. Today, nearly 700 years after his death, the unmatched genius and bold wit of Hafiz continues to ignite hearts and intoxicate souls everywhere. The Illuminated Hafiz brings together vivid translations by Coleman Barks, Robert Bly, Omid Safi, Meher Baba, Peter Booth, and others with the luminous art of Michael and Saliha Green, weaving them into a stunning contemporary presentation in the tradition of classical Persian illuminated manuscripts and unveiling the mysteries of the path of love. Come, raise a cup! Join with Hafiz and his incomparable love poems in a holy revel on the journey into light.

Book excerpt: They say that the moonlit hours are the realm of the sorrowful poet. These well traveled moments lit by candle and starlight are the road that poets and warriors tread unseen. We depart from the sea and from the war drenched sands of a desert as to home we return. This is the journey of many and the road of a healer-poet that alludes to the present lain over the construct of the seas, oceans, and ancient desert sands. A voyage through years and of lands far away is where you now shall find yourself drawn into. It is the span of decades to which we now turn for illumination of an informal history transcribed within these pages. Prepare yourself for the journey ahead as it is not for the faint of heart. I welcome you to light a candle by which to read with the moon and stars of night as your companion on this journey just as they were once mine. Come now with me into the pages of time lost to the annals of history.I bid you welcome to a Voyage of Light.
