Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, 1913, Vol. 3 Sutherland's hypothesis avoids the difficulties pointed out by Rowland5 in 1879 as also some of those advanced in connection with other theories. Unfortunately, however, it thus far admits of no conclusive proof, chiefly for the reason that it leads to an expression for the magnetic potential precisely the same, as far as effects on or above the Earth's surface are concerned, whether the magnetic field be due to an elemental magnet at the center of the Earth, or to a uniformly magnetized sphere, or to an appro priate system of electric currents imbedded in the Earth, or to a rotating electrically charged sphere such as Sutherland supposed, or to a combination of these causes. Mathematically the mag netic fields ascribed to these various, distinct causes can not be differentiated from one another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, Vol. 4: 1914 In the pocket-like Gulf of Alaska the rotation of the earth causes the water of the antarctic current to pile up, and to rise nearly, in the winter possibly in some places quite, to the sur face. Over the surface Of this cold antarctic water flows the wind impelled drift from the kuro-siwo, which divides, part of it skirting the northern part of the Gulf of Alaska, and part flow ing southward down the coast. The water Of the kuro-siwo drift and the antarctic water are of the same salinity, and there fore they mix readily. Hence the southern derivative from the Kuro - Siwo drift, the so-called California current, as it flows southward dissolves into itself the cold water of the antarctic stream immediately beneath it, presenting the curious phenom enon Of a current flowing southward, yet at the same time becoming colder and colder. In the southwestern portion of the basins of the Pacific, At lantic and Indian oceans the abyssal water slowly rises and, flowing southward, takes the place in the circumpolar antarctic circulation of the water lost thru the Humboldt, Benguela and Australian currents. In the central portion of the oceanic basins the general motion of the water is from east to west, the water lost from the currents flowing northward across the basins and being picked up by the southerly currents on the other side. This circulation is rapid in the high southern latitudes, diminishing in intensity northward. The water of the circumpolar west wind drift of low southern latitudes, north of the true antarctic current, is mainly surface water from the north caught up and driven forward by the strong wind. This west wind drift forms a band dividing the abyssal antarctic circulation from the superficial circulation further north. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, 1917, Vol. 7 Although the excitation of phosphorescence by the radiations from radioactive substances was early observed it appears that no quantitative measurements of the luminosity thus produced were published until 1910. In that year Marsden published a series of observations which showed that the luminescence of certain materials (zinc sulphide, willemite, and barium platinocyanide) hermetically sealed in tubes containing radium emanation decreased much more rapidly than the emanation decayed, and that the rate of decrease increased with the amount of emanation initially present. He reported only relative values. At the same time Rutherford advanced a theory to account for these phenomena, and showed that it agrees with Marsden's observations, within the limits of experimental error. No later measurements of such luminosities have apparently been published, although the subject is one of considerable scientific interest. Latterly the subject has become of much practical importance, owing to an increasing use of self-luminous preparations containing radioactive excitants. Besides being used for the illumination of watch dials, push buttons, etc., these preparations have a wide field of usefulness in war appliances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, 1919, Vol. 9 The 'ensemble of the collection points to climatic conditions similar to those prevailing at present in the region, while the earliest Nome bed indicates decidedly warmer water. It is probable that this Pribilof fauna conformed to more rigorous conditions prior to the glacial epoch. The St. George collection as a whole has only seven species identical with those found at Black Bluff, St. Paul Island, which la'tter fauna is doubtless Pleistocene. With the Pliocene second elevated beach fauna at Nome one-third of the St. George collection is identical, but in this third the characteristic warmer water species are not represented. So I conclude that the material obtained by Mr. Hanna represents a period later than the Nome second beach and earlier than that of the Black Bluff fauna. A list of the species is given in table 1. The type specimens are preserved in the U. S. National Museum. Botany. - The ancestry of maize. J. H. Kempton, Bureau of Plant Industry. (communicated by William R. Maxon.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, 1923, Vol. 13 In a recent paper the writer described some alnoitic rocks from Isle Cadieux, Quebec, that contain the mineral, monticellite. This was presumed to be the first recognition of monticellite as an igneous rock mineral.2 After the paper was published K.H. Scheumann called my attention to a mineral occurring in rocks of a related character from Polzen, Bohemia, of which mineral he has said: "Perhaps we are dealing with monticellite, whose occurrence in a rock so rich in magnesia would not be surprising, or perhaps with an olivine rich in the monticellite molecule." Scheumann's descriptions show that the mineral is, with little possible doubt, the same as that in the Canadian rocks and is to be regarded as monticellite even though his optical determinations were not sufficiently quantitative to establish its identity. These observations of Scheumann swere not known to me nor were they recalled by any of the petrologists with whom I discussed the occurrence of monticellite in igneous rocks. Had the Polzen rocks been described under more familiar names such as alnoite, melilite basalt, with such qualifying terms as may have been necessary, they and their characters would not have escaped my notice in general abstract literature, but appearing under the disguise of locality names it is perhaps not surprising that they did not attract attention. Of this matter more later. In the paper on the Cadieux rocks were included the results of some experimental work designed to throw light on the origin of some of the mineral phases present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences, Vol. 10 MIneralogy. - Hansmannite in the Batesville district, Arakansas. H. D. Miser and J. G. Fairchild, U. S. Geological Survey. During the investigation of the manganese deposits of the Batesville district by the senior author, beginning in 1918, particular attention was given to a manganese mineral that has been previously classed as braunite. The mineral forms a large part of the marketed manganese ore and, being entirely free or almost free of chemically combined silica, differs in this respect from the typical braunite that is found in this district, as well as at practically all, if not all, other known localities. The two accompanying analyses by the junior author, taken in connection with the physical and optical properties of the mineral under discussion, indicate that it is hausmannite. Since only one other authentic occurrence of hausmannite in the United States has been reported and since it is, as stated above, one of the important ore-forming minerals of the Batesville district, this paper regarding it has been prepared. And that the agreement between the colorimetric and the electro metric methods is good in every case. Such agreements show that the two methods give comparable results and give ground for inferring that such results are approximately correct. It would seem premature at this time to apply the results obtained in this way to the soil as it exists in the field, since carbon dioxide is lost during the drying and the natural soil solution is diluted for the determinations. Nevertheless it may well happen that the errors so introduced (from a field standpoint) are not great enough to obscure the differences observable between different soils. Further work will be required to ascertain whether this is the case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
