Book Synopsis The Art of Paper by : Caroline Fowler

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold story of how paper revolutionized art making during the Renaissance, exploring how it shaped broader concepts of authorship, memory, and the transmission of ideas over the course of three centuries In the late medieval and Renaissance period, paper transformed society--not only through its role in the invention of print but also in the way it influenced artistic production. The Art of Paper tells the history of this medium in the context of the artist's workshop from the thirteenth century, when it was imported to Europe from Africa, to the sixteenth century, when European paper was exported to the colonies of New Spain. In this pathbreaking work, Caroline Fowler approaches the topic culturally rather than technically, deftly exploring the way paper shaped concepts of authorship, preservation, and the transmission of ideas during this period. This book both tells a transcultural history of paper from the Cairo Genizah to the Mesoamerican manuscript and examines how paper became "Europeanized" through the various mechanisms of the watermark, colonization, and the philosophy of John Locke. Ultimately, Fowler demonstrates how paper--as refuse and rags transformed into white surface--informed the works for which it was used, as well as artists' thinking more broadly, across the early modern world.

Download or read book The American Law Institute written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The centennial of the American Law Institute is a landmark event. A lifespan of one hundred years is significant for a law reform project. Most such initiatives terminate when they achieve their limited goals, they fail, or members lose interest when their funding runs out. Instead, the American Law Institute is the preeminent legal reform organisation in the United States and remains an enterprise in full vigour, with an enormous number of projects completed and an impressive array of projects in forward motion. The American Law Institute: A Centennial History brings together an outstanding group of expert scholars, several of them current or former Reporters for the ALI Restatements of Law, to provide an in-depth scholarly history of the ALI, its role in legal reform, and the various ways it has impacted law in the United States. The resulting collection of essays provides original and important perspectives on both the ALI and its relevance for American Law. This book offers a window into the course of legal thought over the past century and is a must-read for academics, practitioners, and all those interested in the way laws are shaped within the United States.

Download or read book Concrete written by Catherine Croft and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first title in a new series aimed at sharing best practices in the conservation of modern heritage. This timely volume brings together fourteen case studies that address the challenges of conserving the twentieth century’s most ubiquitous building material—concrete. Following a meeting of international heritage conservation professionals in 2013, the need for recent, thorough, and well-vetted case studies on conserving twentieth-century heritage became clear. Concrete: Case Studies in Conservation Practice answers that need and kicks off a new series, Conserving Modern Heritage, aimed at sharing best practices. The projects selected represent a range of building typologies, building uses, and project sizes, from the high-rise housing blocks of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation and public buildings such as the London’s National Theatre to small monuments such as the structures at Dudley Zoological Gardens and a sculpture by Donald Judd. The projects also represent a range of environmental and economic contexts. Some projects benefit from high levels of heritage protection and access to funding, while others have had to negotiate conservation with stringent cost limitations. All follow a rigorous conservation approach, beginning with a process of investigation and diagnosis to identify causes and target repairs and balancing these with conservation requirements to preserve significance. Written by architects, engineers, conservators, scholars, and other professionals in the field, these highly detailed and well-illustrated studies demonstrate sound practice, rigorous methodology, and technological innovation and represent the vibrancy of the field as it stands today. This book has something to offer anyone interested in the conservation of modern heritage.
Book Synopsis The Futures of American Studies by : Robyn Wiegman
Download or read book The Futures of American Studies written by Robyn Wiegman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-21 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originating as a proponent of U.S. exceptionalism during the Cold War, American Studies has now reinvented itself, vigorously critiquing various kinds of critical hegemony and launching innovative interdisciplinary endeavors. The Futures of American Studies considers the field today and provides important deliberations on what it might yet become. Essays by both prominent and emerging scholars provide theoretically engaging analyses of the postnational impulse of current scholarship, the field's historical relationship to social movements, the status of theory, the state of higher education in the United States, and the impact of ethnic and gender studies on area studies. They also investigate the influence of poststructuralism, postcolonial studies, sexuality studies, and cultural studies on U.S. nationalist—and antinationalist—discourses. No single overriding paradigm dominates the anthology. Instead, the articles enter into a lively and challenging dialogue with one another. A major assessment of the state of the field, The Futures of American Studies is necessary reading for American Studies scholars. Contributors.
