Book excerpt: This book examines the diversity of international student experiences in the top four destination countries in the English-speaking world (United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada). Bringing together scholars from the fields of education, sociology, communications, linguistics, international relations, and geography, this edited collection explores the challenges and opportunities of “international encounters” on college and university campuses. Additionally, the contributors rethink many of the key concepts in the field of international student studies such as “international student,” “host community,” and “cultural adjustment” while also critically examining the role that race, gender, and national identity play in shaping international student experiences. Through a series of case studies, the contributions to this book highlight the diverse experiences of international students from different world regions, including East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The broader aim of the book is to enrich our understanding of cross-cultural interactions within the context of higher education institutions in order to enhance the international student experience.

Book excerpt: This book presents a structured yet flexible methodology for developing intercultural competence in a variety of contexts, both formal and informal. Piloted around the world by UNESCO, this methodology has proven to be effective in a range of different contexts and focused on a variety of different issues. It, therefore can be considered an important resource for anyone concerned with effectively managing the growing cultural diversity within our societies to ensure inclusive and sustainable development. Intercultural competence refers to the skills, attitudes, and behaviours needed to improve interactions across difference, whether within a society (differences due to age, gender, religion, socio-economic status, political affiliation, ethnicity, and so on) or across borders. The book serves as a tool to develop those competences, presenting an innovative adaptation of what could be considered an ancient tradition of storytelling found in many cultures. Through engaging in the methodology, participants develop key elements of intercultural competence, including greater self-awareness, openness, respect, reflexivity, empathy, increased awareness of others, and in the end, greater cultural humility. This book will be of great interest to intercultural trainers, policy makers, development practitioners, educators, community organizers, civil society leaders, university lecturers and students – all who are interested in developing intercultural competence as a means to understand and appreciate difference, develop relationships with those across difference, engage in intercultural dialogue, and bridge societal divides.

Book excerpt: This 150-page book includes the wishes and notes received from more than 400 scholars from all over the world regarding the 10th anniversary of the Journal of International Student and Dr. Krishna Bista, the founding editor and his leadership in research and collaboration. "Congratulations on reaching this important ten-year milestone for the Journal of International Students. It has gone from strength to strength and I wish you and the journal the very best for the next ten years and beyond." -Elspeth Jones, Series Editor, Internationalization in Higher Education (Routledge), Emerita Professor of the Internationalisation of Higher Education, Leeds Beckett University "Congratulations on 10 years of the Journal of International Students. As Founding Editor of the Journal of Studies in International Education, I sympathize with your great accomplishment to found your journal. There is nothing more challenging than that but also nothing more rewarding when it becomes a success. And a success it has been, as in one decade you have been able to develop the journal into a leading impact journal with a global scope in content, authors and editorial support. For many years I felt lonely with my journal as the only one in the field, but your initiative has added a valuable addition and by that recognition of the field of internationalization. Many thanks and I am sure you will continue making a difference." Hans de Wit, Founding Editor Journal of Studies in International Education; Director, Center for International Higher Education at Boston College "Hearty Congratulations on achieving this significant milestone of 10 years of JIS! This Journal continues to make an impressive contribution to our field - thank you for your vision and hard work over this past decade in making this possible. Our field is so fortunate to have a visionary, dedicated scholar such as yourself! Warmest wishes on the next 10 and beyond! Happy 10th Anniversary!" Book excerpt: Addressing both veterans of justice work and novices seeking points of entry, the essays in this volume showcase practical approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion: ways to build community, earn trust, tell unheard stories, and develop solutions to problems. Emphasizing values such as empathy, self-reflection, and integrity, the volume is rooted in humanities work but also features contributions from fields as diverse as the performing arts, architecture, and evolutionary biology and represents settings beyond the college campus, such as schools, libraries, museums, and prisons. While bringing insights from higher education, it critiques the system as well, exploring the ways that institutions reinforce power structures and exclude marginalized voices. Interspersed with the essays, brief reflections by activists and artists offer testimony and inspiration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most education settings in South Africa and other post-colonial emerging economies are multilingual and diverse. Indeed, multilingual classrooms have become commonplace in developed countries as well. Yet many countries in post-colonial Sub-Saharan Africa use English as a medium of instruction in multilingual contexts from the early grades. The implications of this practice for teaching and learning are multifaceted. Its negative effects on achievement, retention and dropout rates, psychosocial wellbeing and community development cannot be overstated and are well documented. Societal emancipation and transformation begin in the education setting, and no transformation discourse can be successful if the issues surrounding multilingualism are not properly addressed. Teaching and learning pedagogies that ignore the complexities and dynamics of multilingual classrooms are simply reinforcing past worldviews and improved learner-achievement results cannot be expected unless things are approached differently. This book, written by authors from across Africa from first-hand experience in research and teaching, focuses mainly on teaching pedagogy and on evidenced-based analysis and guidelines. It supports, among other arguments, the need to view indigenous languages as assets and resources within classrooms. It is a resource for teachers and learners in multilingual contexts worldwide.
