Sarah confides in her diary, revealing conflicting feelings about her stepmother. Is Sarah's faith being tested? Will she ever accept Ann? Walk back in time as Sarah falls in love, marries, starts a family, and crosses sixty miles of wilderness by horse and wagon to Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Years later, during King Philip's War, four of Sarah's family members are slain. Sarah's journal gives her daughter, Abigail, hope and courage to overcome the horror of Indian captivity. Can Abigail escape and find her family once more?

Book excerpt: A beautiful English garden overflowing with cascades of flowers, alive with the fluttering and floating of birds and butterflies and awash with fragrance--this is the life hoped for. A garden of perfection with perfect weather, abundance, and season after season filled with only delights. A garden of comfort, a garden of joy, a painting one could have walked into and lived dreams of a perfect life. But the garden of life is not a perfect English garden. Yet within it, God has painted pictures of faith, hope, love and, yes, even correction in the places it's needed. A Garden of Hope illustrates lessons that cannot be painted with a paintbrush; they are painted instead with words. Those who read these words see God and realize He is everything they need. Life that seems so imperfect is full of beauty, for it has been perfectly designed as an invitation for us to know God.

Book excerpt: Inspired by a true story, Color Me Butterfly follows four generations of mothers and daughters—haunted by a common specter of domestic abuse—as they discover the strength, hope, and courage to survive. The last thing Eloise Bingham wanted was to leave the comforts of her South Carolina home and family. But at the end of World War II, the young wife follows her husband, Isaac, to Philadelphia—only to experience his sinister and violent temper. Eloise’s children—and their children and grandchildren—will face their own trials over the next sixty years: Mattie, who has lived in her mother Eloise’s shadow, finds it takes a life-changing tragedy to help her break free; Lydia, Mattie’s strong-willed daughter, summons the resolve to rise above the cycle of abuse; and finally, Treasure, Lydia’s lively daughter, has the chance to be the first to escape her family’s destructive legacy. It will take unconditional love, old-fashioned family values, faith, and fearless determination—already embedded in each woman’s DNA—to triumph over a life plagued with unspeakable pain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s and 1940s, a loose alliance of blacks and whites, individuals and organizations, came together to offer a radical alternative to southern conservative politics. In Days of Hope, Patricia Sullivan traces the rise and fall of this movement. Using oral interviews with participants in this movement as well as documentary sources, she demonstrates that the New Deal era inspired a coalition of liberals, black activists, labor organizers, and Communist Party workers who sought to secure the New Deal's social and economic reforms by broadening the base of political participation in the South. From its origins in a nationwide campaign to abolish the poll tax, the initiative to expand democracy in the South developed into a regional drive to register voters and elect liberals to Congress. The NAACP, the CIO Political Action Committee, and the Southern Conference for Human Welfare coordinated this effort, which combined local activism with national strategic planning. Although it dramatically increased black voter registration and led to some electoral successes, the movement ultimately faltered, according to Sullivan, because the anti-Communist fervor of the Cold War and a militant backlash from segregationists fractured the coalition and marginalized southern radicals. Nevertheless, the story of this campaign invites a fuller consideration of the possibilities and constraints that have shaped the struggle for racial democracy in America since the 1930s.

Is my faith not strong enough for God to heal me? How can I achieve my dreams? What’s my purpose? If you’re someone living with a chronic illness or chronic pain, these are just a few of the questions you’ve likely asked on more than one occasion. You may feel overlooked or even resentful. You try to stay positive, but some days it’s hard. It’s natural to feel this way and grieve, but it’s still possible to have a hope-filled life. God has a purpose for the pain. Christians aren’t immune from pain and illness, but we don’t have to go through it alone. Jesus promised that He would “never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV). Millions of women suffering from chronic pain and illness want the reassurance they’re not alone. The devotions in Hope Amid the Pain are written by a chronic pain warrior with over twenty-five years’ experience and will point the reader to hope and encouragement. It’s possible to Hang On to Positive Expectations (HOPE) even amid the pain.
